"What is Justice?"

This. This is Justice.

Great design. I especially like the expressions on the rabbits throwing the eggs. The 'splat' of the egg on the bear's face is almost audible.

I can't find anything in this design that I don't love. IMO, the best submission this week. Fantastic job. If this doesn't print here, please submit it elsewhere. I need this shirt.

Easy mistake to make so no worries man.

Ok, so....
You were right cptngeetar. I just found out that S. Morgenstern is in fact pseudonym and a narrative device invented by Goldman. I got fooled haha. Good one William Goldman!

Re: oopsies

I find this all quite weird. I have had some experience with being creative for money, though in my case as a writer not an illustrator. And anytime that I've been paid for my writing I've been required to fill out any number of tax forms to make sure the income is properly reported to the IRS and that they get their proper cut. It's interesting that up thread someone mentioned that there's no demand here for a social security number, but there would be as part of these tax forms.

This is why I've never once considered, even when I saw this similar-in-style drawing, that Seki could come back to submit more shirts under a new name. It's one thing to have fake accounts for voting, or for shirt buying, but I assume at some point if Woot is going to hand someone money that they are going to make sure they know who that money is being handed to. And I'd be shocked if winning artists aren't required to fill out some of the same self employment paperwork I've had to fill out anytime an established company has paid me money for my creative output.

Am I wrong? Cause seriously, this feels fairly open and shut, even without secret private message evidence.

That said, while I have no reason to doubt the veracity of the artist, the style holds no appeal to me, so it's a no from me on this shirt.

It's a shame that your design was rejected. It's beautiful. Most of the other entries are crap. I would have purchased this one.

Bummed. This shirt is what I think this derby was meant to bring out. You know the whole, "Maybe if we ask them to do the crappy cutesy animals bit, they'll do something with a bit more appeal to people over sixteen."

Keep pushing it right up to the edge of the design limits. It stands out.

Make sure you don't have transparencies in your uploaded art.

Ok, that makes sense. Thank you for the help, sir

megsck wrote:maybe because he asked. everyone just jumped to accusing and posting hate seki comments in this thread. how many of you sent a polite respectful email to the artist to inquire about their work?

While there's nothing wrong with sending a polite email, I do find it strange that when several people did politely suggest that she post a link to her work/an explanation here in the thread, she did nothing to acknowledge these requests/advice. You would think she wouldn't want ALL of us to email her privately and explain herself over and over to people. If there's nothing wrong with how the design was created she should have no problem explaining it here. At this point I am inclined to believe that this is NOT Seki; however, I think the artist could shut a lot of it down by simply obliging those who asked about an artist website/deviantart. It should require minimal effort for her to post a link-so why hasn't she done it?

Yes, I realize it is very strange, and even bad, for an artist new to the site to have to "prove" who they are, but in the end this should not be a difficult thing to do. If she doesn't have any art posted on the internet yet, she could say that too. It is the lack of response that is strange.

I will say I feel sorry for her having to deal with all this. It cannot be fun.

I love this website! ^^

amh wrote:K8edid3: I'm sad you don't believe me, but there isn't much I can do except tell you that if someone tries to find a relatively small part of a artwork which in this case is just an outline, and tries adjusting a similar photo to it by stretching, rotating, skewing, etc. All realistic artwork is then possible to be considered traced from somewhere. In this case, all I can do is give my sincere word that I did not do that. As I said, I also hope that people that start with an assumption of dishonesty and try to adjust external content to make their claim appear substantiated spend instead their time producing original art of better quality than the one they are biased against. As for the rest of Woot, the majority of user, keep being the same, you're awesome. Too bad a few ruin it for the rest.

Here's the thing. The derbies are kind of a big deal. Those who have a shirt design picked for printing receive $1000. When I saw this design that looked like a photo, I was a little suspicious. I only did a quick (and I mean quick) google search for bear images. When I discovered that they looked a little too similar for being original work, I posted the links. I didn't even click on the "tattle" button. I just posted them and stated my opinon. It was up to others to decide if they agreed with me or not. Turns out the woot judges agreed and rejected your design. And then when Adam posted the bear photo overlayed on your work, it just proved my suspicion. I don't think it's fair for someone to use others' work and pass it off as their own to then win $1000. Sorry you don't see the error of your ways and that you feel "I ruin it for the rest..." I'm just trying to keep things fair.

And as Adam stated, "I hope you see that you are better than doing that and continue to work on your art. You do well when you try on your own..." I agree with this and hope you continue with your OWN original work because I did enjoy it.

I think the idea is that Seki found somebody else to be a puppet and is using that person to submit through and receive payment. Seki still makes money gaming the derby and her friend makes a cut by being the middle man.

There are just too many similarities and odd things happening here, it's not just wild conspiracy theory. As others have mentioned recently, if this J person REALLY isn't Seki and has nothing to do with her it's surprising that he/she hasn't been chomping at the bit to deny it and prove otherwise. Sensitive personal info isn't required, all people ask for is a little self promotion. A website, a blog, a deviantart page, most artists have this stuff and are eager to spread it around.

Having no history, no body of work, no evidence at all just adds to the suspicion that she's Seki or a Seki puppet.

I wanted to show rejects of the woods, of course they're birds. Here's the lineup:

disgruntled woodpecker,
evil egg,
long-leg owl,
hawk with a case of small-man's disease,
robin who likes to lick his armpits,
half-wit Canadian goose (no offense),
obese bluebird.

I would call the color "Bird-Turd Green".

Johndis5 wrote:A body of their own artwork would suffice, and since this is obviously not a first time piece of digital art for this artist, this should not be a problem for the artist to provide. In fact, nearly all of the designers are eager to show off their other works, asking this person to do the same is not an invasion of privacy, it's a simple and reasonable request.

This is the lynchpin of the issue right here. There's not even a need for a "body of work", just a few samples! Given the excellent reception (votes) to this design, it seems most of the Woot community appreciates and is welcoming to the artist. Why not indulge them with a few more samples? The request is totally warranted given the issues in the past.

I understand a couple "loud" dissenting voices can be intimidating, but when the majority is obviously supportive of the work and therefore the artist, as Johndis says, "it's a simple and reasonable request." Think of it as "Welcome to shirt.woot! We like your stuff, can we see more?"
