Re: Mirai

It's a beautiful design, bass. The situation in Japan is on everyone's minds, it would be strange if it didn't come out in the work of passionate artists like yourself. This has GMV.

I was a little concerned that the theme of this derby would turn out to be ill-timed, what with the scenes of destruction in the news and robotics being so synonymous with the country. I thought there might be some uncomfortable designs, however this kind of poetic and positive artwork is very much appropriate and anyone with a heart can tell it comes from a genuine place.

Re: Turtlebot Earth RESUB

I know this is a re-sub... =BUT= I really wish there were more colors on the shirt. I'd vote for it IF the turtle wasn't the same color as outer space. Blue or green makes no difference to me, just so long as someone can SEE the turtle without staring at my chest/tummy for 2 min.

ciaranannrach wrote:There's a difference between invoking the disaster to make money, and creating a work of art that is inspired by and pays homage to those affected by the disaster. The fact that money is involved in the latter case becomes coincidental. That difference is small, but very important, and one can only be distinguished from the other by the sincerity (or lack thereof) of the artist.

Aren't you being a tad unfair in automatically assuming that Bassanimation is insincere, and that her motives are purely fueled by greed? If her motives are impure, wouldn't you think that she'd have made the Japan aspect of the design larger and more prominent? I didn't see Japan on the globe at all until I read other peoples comments. Not very smart if you're going for the pity-votes.

I have very little doubt that you are completely correct. Here's the problem though. This is a very similar situation to one that came up before (though not in the shirt title) in which a shirt subbed by Snowqueen was tagged in the title that it was designed by a 4 (I think) year old.

Sure it was put there to highlight how precocious the design was, but the fact of the matter remained that it caused people to vote for the "child" design rather than the design. It didn't print and it wasn't in the fog but it got several hundred more votes than it would have if the age of the designer was never mentioned.

The exact same thing is liable to happen here. I am quite sure that bass' intentions were good. The fact still remains that it creates a situation in which people vote for this design because it's the design "for Japan" not because they like the design. When that comes along with the fact that bass stands to get $1000 plus prizes plus $2 per shirt sold after, there is necessarily a conflict of interest.

The bottom line is that if you don't intend on donating money to aid those suffering from the quake, tsunami, nuclear distress, etc then it shouldn't even be mentioned. Otherwise no matter what intentions were, the situation is, "I made this for all the people suffering. You should feel bad and vote so I can make money and win fabulous prizes." There isn't any other interpretation.

You also might want to comment on the first submission that you've resubbed it, with a link to here- so that you make sure you get all of the people who voted for the 1st/ looking at it to vote for this one instead.

Truth in numbers. Binary code on the shield. Quirk, old-school bots. Victorian reference. Scratchy sketch style.

Oh... Yes. Definitely yes.

Re: Crush... Kill... Restore...

NOTE: I'm not on shirt staff and thus have no say on rejections. Just a spectator like everyone else here.

While this may not be an original idea, I don't think it's close enough to any other design to warrant rejection. Go Google "robot plant shirt" or "Robot flower shirt" and you'll find plenty of other similar designs. To follow the logic being presented here, then Patrickspen's shirt should never have printed either. I think the two are different enough to allow the voters to speak with their votes.

That said, does that robot have long black hair?

Aside: kylemittskus & mrwednesday, you both have a habit of not letting an argument go. While I appreciate you stating your case and you've both done so quite well, just try not to let this thread get overtaken by restating the same arguments repeatedly. Thx.

Re: Crush... Kill... Restore...

Controversy be damned. The single fact that your robot's action is to scoop earth around a plant, rather than uproot is, is telling enough. It fulfills the theme, and is distinct in style and essence from Patrick's design.
There's room enough....

There are several designers I recognize from woot. That is why I chose it as an example. They should all be applauded.

A perverted tu quoque argument doesn't really make your point any stronger. Your logic is, "Well, we let the other one slide so we have to let this one slide too. It's only fair." The other design probably should have been rejected, and IIRC, people argued just that. The fact that you're pointing out that there are "plenty of other similar designs" should be an argument for rejection -- not against it.

Aside: I will restrain myself from repeatedly pointing out poor logical reasoning when it is repeated. (Snark aside, I understand.)

"Champagne is a very kind and friendly thing on a rainy night." -Isak Dinesen

You twisted my words completely. What I said was I didn't see that much similarity between the designs. It's not unusual to have designs that have been tried before (Wizard of Oz, Monty Python, Three Little Pigs to name a few) but each has taken a unique view of the topic. My opinion is that the same is true here.

In keeping with my own wish to not overtake the thread, this will be my last post since I've stated my opinion.

This isn't even good for a terrible ramy shirt. Given that even decent ramy designs sit at the bottom end of what even mediocre designers produce the fact that this is in the fog should be embarrassing even for the fanboys. I'm pretty sure it will embarrass FUNimation if they have to give this design a prize for being in the top three and they're an anime producer for warp's sake......

Oh good Lord. Embarrassing FUNimation? REALLY? That's a tad dramatic.

Also, I like the design. Good job, Ramy.
