I made the stars more uneven and not so blockish (thanks for that suggestion!) and I thought it might look cool with all the stars the metallic gold.

Meh. I'm not seeing the problems you are, but you're welcome to your opinion. I personally fall into the same camp as chumpmagic. Besides, a art is often inspired or influenced by recent events, especially tragic ones. Why should shirt.woot be immune from those influences?

That said, it's a beautiful design, and GMV.

No. We understand what you're saying; it's just Jatravartid. Bullet to zombie head = no more zombie. Cross to zombie = you are now a zombie. I think it's pretty clear that the robot is preparing to shoot the zombie as it emerges from the grave.

Don't listen to the haters. I think this shirt is awesome, and while there have been some zombie shirts recently, quality is still quality.

Well thank you, guys. I'm pleased with how this turned out and I couldn't possibly have worked harder on it.

Trying on Geoff Darrow's kind of style for size was a lot of fun and very challenging for me. I'm glad I gave it a shot even if it's not super popular.

Bah, don't worry about that.

Though, there is one thing bothering me. What is that white bit on her chest? I can't quite figure out what that's supposed to be.

Re: Alien Vs Robot RESUB

Oh man, thanks to Mr. Wednesday for pointing out how the inclusion of the entire UFO in the foreground watered down the unique framing that the original one had. It's funny, because that was what my initial thrust was, but the changes I made gradually led me to a different, and ultimately weaker design. Between his comment and also the pointers from the pre-derby thread including, Meg and Paige, I think I really have the design that was hidden in my brain when I first sketched out the idea.

OK, cheers, thanks again, and boop boop beep beep.

I wouldn't take it personally Bass. It sounds like sour grapes on his part. It's a beautiful design, full of hope and promise for the future.

And re: profiting on a disaster? Pschaw! I agree, it's a timely event that weighs heavily on all our hearts, and will undoubtedly spawn many works of art (drawings, music, poetry, etc.) in the very near future.

Whether or not you choose to donate all or part of the earnings if you win to help Japan's recovery is your own choice. --If the shirt raises awareness, or offers a glimmer of hope in a desperate situation, it will have done its job!

You invoked a recent disaster that has claimed the lives of thousands of people so far, and the count is rising everyday for this design with the hopes of profiting on it.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice design, I'm just repulsed that you would invoke the disaster to make money.

Re: Mirai

The ribbon is such a small part of the overall design. I'm having a hard time believing she used that little bit of the image as a way to profit off the disaster. Maybe we should give people the benefit of the doubt more often.

Bass, the design is beautiful. GMV.

To be fair to Bass, there are a lot of things involved in a derby that mean something to the artist. Appreciation of their work. The opportunity to get that work printed, regardless of a paycheck. Would Bass be guilty of any wrong if there was no check at stake? I wouldn't think so. I give her the benefit of the doubt here. I seriously have my doubts that her line of thinking was "I'm going to exploit the Japan tsunami to make money!" which would be the only line that would be contemptible. I'm willing to bet that she wanted to make a pretty design that she felt honored Japan and decided to submit it because, well, why not? I don't see the wrong in that.

jmmbell1987

This reminds me a LOT of your first design, which ended up rejected for being unprintable. Hence, I'm a bit less enthused about the use of colors (which is impressive, to be fair) than others.

That said, Woot's printers have handled some tough designs in the last few months, much better than in the past.

There's a difference between invoking the disaster to make money, and creating a work of art that is inspired by and pays homage to those affected by the disaster. The fact that money is involved in the latter case becomes coincidental. That difference is small, but very important, and one can only be distinguished from the other by the sincerity (or lack thereof) of the artist.

Aren't you being a tad unfair in automatically assuming that Bassanimation is insincere, and that her motives are purely fueled by greed? If her motives are impure, wouldn't you think that she'd have made the Japan aspect of the design larger and more prominent? I didn't see Japan on the globe at all until I read other peoples comments. Not very smart if you're going for the pity-votes.

*facepalm*

You say you understand then go on to repeat the same counterargument that has nothing to do with my point. I am not trying and have no wish to debate the effectiveness of techniques and instrumentation for dealing with a fictional outbreak of the undead. A t-shirt, (especially considering the target audience) cutesy with a simple punchline, should be easily readable IMO, which this is not. It took me a minute to realize it was a gun it is holding and even then it wasn't immediately clear it was using it against the zombie. So again the crux of the shirt, helpful robot fighting against zombies, is not well conveyed...IMO

How are people supposed to buy shirts to ware memorially or in solidarity if no one designs them?

My only problem with this shirt is that it's an exoskeleton and not a proper robot.
