Nicely done man. Inventive, original, and captures a bit of imaginative spirit.
Being the bookworm/hopeful writer that I am, I want this to print.

Nekkochan wrote:I think this is a very cool drawing, but can somebody tell me what the difference is between a cool one- or two-color drawing, and a woodcut? Because this doesn't say "woodcut" to me, it says "illustration."

I'm not trying to be snarky, I don't know a lot about woodcuts so I may just need to be educated.

Many early book Illustrations were done as wood cuts, put ink over the bas relief and press on paper. Above are some examples of a darker artist. Also look at the 1800's Dante's inferno illos for examples.

FINALLY, is the first thing I thought when I saw this shirt. I've been waiting for a while now for a real high quality composition from you ramy. This is really one of your best yet. I hope it prints.

And I almost don't mind that it's on a brown shirt. I think I'd still wear it.

Re: Saint George and The Dragon

I'm not terribly worried about the "woodcut vs. not-woodcut." thing. It seems that primary argumetn that it isn't a woodcut is that it's too detailed, but many many woodcuts are much more intricately detailed than this.

My primary concern is the color choices. I don't know how the light salmony color compares but I worry this will turn out a lot like Pandora's Friends in which much of the color was completely indistinguishable from the shirt.

Now I realize this color is much brighter than the one boots used but it still looks pretty close. It's hard for me to gauge how it will print. Although you have have used this color before on one of your carnival designs maybe?

Re: To Air

Sorry, but there's nothing special or original about this shirt. It looks like every Roxy, Billabong, Oneil girl's shirt at PacSun. And it looks like every tree/bird shirt that plagued this site a couple years ago. TGentry even made a shirt to mock that whole mess; it not-so-ironically won second place in a derby.

THANK YOU for actually making this look like a woodcut! It's been buggin me that so many of the submissions so far don't. Of course I also think the design is adorable. I'd totally buy it.

Re: The Pensive Lion

I really like this one. It's about the only one I've seen that looks like it would actually print a proper design rather than just looking like it was carved into wood. Fabulous work!

cynic11 wrote:this is great, as usual. and it will get my vote. but what does it have to do with the theme? how can i possibly get "wood carving" from this?

not a naysayer, i love the design, as i love all of your designs. but i just had to ask.

Look at how the details are carried out, the thick cross-hatches and such. The part without the detail is the silhouettes, which just helps to make them stand out more. Wonderful.

Re: Tree Birds

A very simple design but the execution and color choices are flawless. It's definitely one of the best in the derby. My only concern is that the design shown in the mock might be outside the printable area. It looks great as a large print as you've shown but I worry woot is going to downsize the print if it wins and it's going to lose a good deal of its effect.

midgerock wrote:really sweet design design. I really like you chose gray and orange on charcoal instead some bright happy colors on a bright happy colored shirt. Adds to the mood and existential angst of the characters... I know that sounds like bs but that's what I thought.

Doesn't sound like bs to me. :D Thanks, midgerock!

Re: Imagination Takes Flight

I'm really not understanding the raves for this design. It looks nice, sure, but there's nothing particularly amazing about the concept. Things coming out of the pages of books are well covered in the shirt world. ramy has already submitted one or two in the past and there are many others out there. It also strays very little from many of his past work other than he had to make it look like a woodcut.

Re: FACE!

Your shirt comp is squashed. If you resize your image to 580x580 manually before you upload, then the website won't have to resize and squish it.

And same with your thumbnail. You should size it yourself to 240x240. Otherwise it'll get skewed.
