Re: Inspired by It's a Trap!

This design dances on a thin line that shouldn't be dance on. Sure, it's got the creepy factor of death trying to snatch a child--but that is also it's biggest problem. It doesn't so much say that death is trying to take a child's life, as it does "Hop in my van small child, I have sweets." Pedo/kidnap/perv shirt is fail. Not trying to sound snakey, just that the concept isn't really funny. I mean, try it as a joke, like "Have you heard the one about the kidnapped child?"

Not funny man. Sorry.

I like this one a lot better than the original, not quite as cute, and more hilarious. Plus it's great since I eat tons of oranges. GMV.

CVBrennan wrote:Ya so far this is my favorite. I always thought X's on the eyes implied death so I was thinking it should be "flat line" but then again it wouldn't look as pretty. And I also thought why are hits candy guts spewing out on the hospital floor? Doesn't he have health insurance?! It all makes me think. Great Art! <3

They didn't have flour sitting around in the ER to papier-mâché him back to health, so the doctors had to go hit up Wally World.

I felt Jatravartid so I didn't pipe in during the prederby thread, but royal blue was my complete favorite choice for this!!!!!
I love your use of halftones for the water and the picture made me imagine how it must feel to be a whale being tossed in all that water.

Nicely done.

Thank you for your comments bassanimation, blk909, chumpmagic. The airplane in the design is inspired by early machines such as the Deperdussin. It is quite something to know that there are still people who collect and fly early aircraft like that :D.

thewayisshut wrote:.....well I did stick the images in Photoshop, and I can't get them to line up correctly. There are notable differences- the size of the feet, neck angle, ect. aren't exactly the same.

Yet, that doesn't mean, IMO, that this design is off the hook. It may not have been directly traced from the aforementioned image. However, this is a prime example of incorrect use of referencing. Reference does NOT mean "copy a photo to the best of your ability." Furthermore, Reference does NOT mean "copy a photo but change a few things." Reference should only be used for complicated details, like bone shading.

This means that the pose of the image, the action, the major details (like form) must be 100% original work-drawn from imagination. Otherwise, you're just as much an artist as a Xerox machine is. The whole point of woot is that the designs are original work. This horse, the pose and the idea of it, is not in the slightest bit original. Furthermore, the idea of an x-ray horse has already been done. For that reason, I'm not voting for it, and think it should be rejected.

You're entitled to your own opinion of course. In my opinion, there are only so many ways to realistically draw a horse skeleton at rest (standing) since they don't naurally sit and rarely lie down. For the joke to work, the horse has to be standing. Given the other details added in (and I'm not talking about the horse), I think it works fine as derivative art.
