The cartoons and movies are definitely more well known, so I admit I see your point. It's just the word "proper" that I really have an issue with in your post.

exactly. The original comics were great, the cartoon was Sirius GPP as hell.

+1. Excellent colour combination! The squares on the right hand side look perfect. The textures look great too. The waves on their own look good. However, there is something about the inverted-trapezoid (that the waves form)that has something..misplaced, I guess. Maybe keep both sides of the wave formation consistent in pattern/have only one border of waves??

No, I agree. I knew I'd seen a design like this on here somewhere before. It's not exactly the same, but it's too close for comfort in my opinion.

QFT. Also, there's no rule that states pop-culture references are required to be 'smack-you-over-the-head-with-a-clue-by-four' obvious. IMHO, some of the best trend more towards subtle.
