Re: Split Personality

Very cool/abstract design. I love how you can flip it and it works upsidedown too...very cool touch! GMV but as ocho said, it may be too abstract for wooters - from my limited experience here they tend to prefer the more cutesy, straightforward designs...

You'll have to let us know if you sub this somewhere else...I'm pretty new here, and I've never been to any of the other t-shirt sites but I'd be more than willing to sign up somewhere else to help vote =)

Re: Fantasy

Yeah, this is the kind of thing I was hoping for in this derby. A word of caution, it looks like you have gradients at the edge of your design. If you used halftones to achieve that fade effect, you may want to show a close up or risk rejection. It's hard to tell in the images you used. Also, voters typically dislike when designs fade out like that. You're better of having one complete graphic. Cool design, though.

Not sure if this is what you were trying to do, but if you want to use the updated design you'll have to submit it as a completely separate entry. It happens here all the time. Call it Forbidden Robot 2.0 or something.

I like the updated colors better...I think it pops more on the black shirt. Nicely done. The new thumbnail is a plus too, glad someone listens to me every once in a while =P heh...

ApeLad wrote:Very nice! He's got a bit of an Invader Zim vibe. GMV.

Pshhh...way to steal my comment from the original version's thread! haha j/k =P

The "of DOOOOOM!" in the title screams even more Zim than the original design did too. I love it! =D

Re: Skull and Cross Katanas

EVERYONE knows Ninjas and Pirates are mortal enemies. Nice mash-up of the two...but I'm not really seeing the role reversal. Maybe if there were ninjas on a boat flying this flag or something...

Still a REALLY cool design though!

If only it were a dragon saving a prince from an evil princess…now *that*'s role reversal.

I noticed two things that make this feel a little off. First, the scale isn't accurate. Orcas are bigger than penguins but not that much bigger. However, I think it just makes the shirt that much more epic in the end. Second, I think the perspective is weird with the mecha's left flipper in front of the whale. I'm having a tough time figuring that out. Still, I'd love to wear this shirt.

I look closely at others' work if it's drawn well to try to learn for my own benefit! It does look much better in the revised version. And yes, like someone else mentioned, you need to upload a completely separate entry and you need to add v2 or something to the title.

strawberryicee wrote:i agree. same faces and similar arms and legs with only slight modifications. if you asked me, i'd say that PatrickSpens made himself a separate account and modified his drawings ever so slightly to pass them off as another artist's drawing (don't know why he would do such a thing). either that or someone else is plagiarizing his work because this looks all too similar to the classic PatrickSpens style / coloring. just my thoughts.

The faces and arms/legs are very generic versions, so I don't think that's a valid factor...you can find plenty of other designs with those kind of faces and/or arms and legs. Overall, the design is much less polished than patrickspens' work (no offense to the artist, because I think it still looks great). And as for color palette, he was originally working on a Royal Blue template in the pre-derby thread, which was NOT a patrickspens kind of palette. I don't think it's similar enough to be considered plagiarism, I think it's someone trying to improve their style. Also, his first submission was in Derby #92 (woo, shirt.what!), so makes even less sense.

Very good concept. However, the mix of illustration and vector graphics does not match (Triangles on the snake's body and on the girl's dress). Pick one style and stick with it.

Is the snake supposed to look stoned?

Good deal! I remember talking about that with you and Ocho a few derbies ago. So what shirt did you end up going with? My money is on "Shelf Life" - I know MY mom loved that design, and we just got ours in the mail a few days ago. Don't worry, she promised not to wear it if I'm wearing mine and vice versa =P hahaha

ochopika wrote:Hah, you working people and your work (I'm still looking for that). I love your analysis of the cat's expression, lol.

Hey, look at it this way...being unemployed gives you more time to perfect your already-awesome designs! =D

And I'm a master at doggie facial expresions (as a former dog-trainer I kind-of had to be) so it's only natural that cats would be my next step while working at a vet. And speaking of...we're looking for a full-time receptionist, are you good at answering phones?

Yah, even for a female that IS a lightweight for an English Mastiff. I just had to give a bath to a 205-pounder at the vet I work at the other day. No easy task =P Thankfully he was a laid-back sort (in typical Mastiff fashion) and didn't put up a fight. We couldn't lift him into the tub so we had to break out the extention hose and wash him in a run instead...

The design is really spectacular! I don't really like the shirt color choice though. I think slate might have been better, and it makes me wish we still had heather grey because I think that would be perfect.

I don't think the average person will really care. I'm not sure I'd notice it just passing by on a shirt. The concept is clear and as I said the art is really well done.

Giving it a second look, I think what is causing the disconnect for me is that the penguin mecha has so much depth. It really pops out of the shirt. The orca by comparison looks really flat, which is what was giving it that postery look I mentioned the first time. So the perspective looks out of phase.

Anyway, good luck and I hope it's a print!
