mrwednesday wrote:The design is really spectacular! I don't really like the shirt color choice though. I think slate might have been better, and it makes me wish we still had heather grey because I think that would be perfect.

Glad you like it , and thanks to everyone who voted!

I always languish over shirt color... trust me I clicked many a time between slate and silver. In the end it just seemed to pop better on the lighter color.

Yeah, cute as all get-out. ^_^

I really like your color choice. A regular blue wouldn't have seemed as cosmic or wearable as this teal kinda blue. +1

loychandler wrote:Very good concept. However, the mix of illustration and vector graphics does not match (Triangles on the snake's body and on the girl's dress). Pick one style and stick with it.

Is the snake supposed to look stoned?

Ha Ha, no the snake is not stoned, he's in a trance!

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm pretty new to this and have just started using photoshop a couple of months back for making my woot entries. When you say "Triangles on the snake's body and on the girl's dress", do you mean that this sort of 'half-toning' clashes with the way the illustration is done?

Yes, that would have been good too! This one is called 'snake charmer' because the lady is not just being charmed by the snake, she is also charming the snake

wubupon wrote:I agree that he represents the story well and it is a really nice looking shirt, but I really can't support the idea that it is role reversal. The roles are as follows. The role of the children in the story for most versions is that the children are the victors against the evil witch (in fact in one version, the witch actually is turned into gingerbread) and the role of the witch is as the loser who gets killed by the children. It accurately portrays the roles as is and not the roles reversed. I think that for it to be a true role reversal, the witch should be sitting there waiting to eat the children. Although, even if it were the witch eating the children, it may still not seem like a clear role reversal (possibly because some people have heard a version where the roles are reversed). Honestly, I wouldn't know any good way to be able to settle this dispute.

So the real role reversal should be the three of them happy gathering at the table. That work for both versions.

curli76 wrote:Not sure if you're joking. . . I didn't get that it was a Garfield reference at all. It's a human sized orange cat that looks nothing like Garfield. Garfield never playfully wakes up Jon with his paw the way the guy is, so as a role reversal the idea that this is Garfield falls flat, too. It's very obviously a reference to cats who wake their owners up while standing on top of them and incessantly pawing them in the face when all they want to do is sleep. . . not sure where the artists got their idea from, but I posted the same exact idea in the Derby forum, and I also did not have Garfield in mind at all.

Actually when Uniique and I were coming up with ideas, it was all based on my annoying and fat cat Smudge. I didn't even think Garfield, in fact all I could think of was my experiences with my own cats. I can see how people kind of thought it was Garfield, but it really was our own versions of our cats. I did some color tests based on a blue shirt which is why the orangish color came about, it looked good on it. Uniique did an awesome making those colors look great.

I agree; cats don't come in too many colors; you've got orange and several shades of black, white, grey, and brown. On a colorful shirt like this, you gotta go with the orange.

I wasn't accusing anyone of stealing my idea; just saying that I understand where it came from, and it wasn't from Garfield. I really hope this prints.

thewronggrape wrote:I don't really get what the role reversal is here.

What's the common relationship between hippos and rhinos that is being reversed?

Or is it the relationship between birds and hippos that is being reversed? (Birds usually wear hippos on their noses but now look a hippo wearing a bird... um, no.)

To me, a role reversal would be a hippo picking out bugs/scraps from a birds feathers and beak. This, however, doesn't fit the theme IMO.

Agreed. And I don't really understand why the rhino has a pillow on his stomach...

stingray69 wrote:Yeah, this is the kind of thing I was hoping for in this derby. A word of caution, it looks like you have gradients at the edge of your design. If you used halftones to achieve that fade effect, you may want to show a close up or risk rejection. It's hard to tell in the images you used. Also, voters typically dislike when designs fade out like that. You're better of having one complete graphic. Cool design, though.

Thanks a lot! Yes, those are indeed halftones, perhaps I should have included a closeup though.
