Thanks so, so much for the great comments and support on this design. Zelda love!

I've never tackled a Zelda design before, the series means a lot to me and I needed an idea that honors the games rather than parodies them. If that makes sense. Probably not. :p

@PixelPants, I always like when it's hard to spot my designs. I'm sneaky like that. :D

I found I really enjoyed drawing and assembling elements into a shape for my tee in the Arctic competition, so I wanted to give that another try but with more color and the look of a distressed 3D image from a distance.

curli76 wrote:In W's original on Threadless, the onion is asking "what?" clearly unaware of its status as a "bully," as indicated by the title "Accidental Bully." So in both shirts, you have an onion with no malice intended causing other vegetables to cry.

Both shirts are the same shade of green. Both shirts feature a tomato and a piece of broccoli (both popular vegetables--yes, a tomato is both a fruit and a vegetable, I'm not going to get started there--but by no means the only popular, art-worthy vegetables out there)similarly placed on the shirt.

Even if Ramyb didn't intend to create a shirt so close to the original, the classy thing to do would have been to say, "Yeah, this is a little too close for comfort. I'll make appropriate changes and resub or do something totally different." He didn't behave that way.

I'm not a blind follower of W or any other artist. . . I didn't vote for all of his submissions this week. But I think if you showed the two shirts to a handful of people on the street, who had never heard of either designer, they'd agree they were very much alike.

I can't believe I'm arguing over the intentions of an onion.

This is how the situation played out: I posted the shirt and received an instantaneous barrage of comments about walmazans threadless sub, as well a mocking comments to quickly delete it to"hide the evidence." Having never seen his design before, I felt I had nothing to hide, especially since the two shirts have relatively different concepts (which are not particularly groundbreaking to begin with)-seriously spend five minutes looking up onion shirts and you will find that people realized long ago that onions make people cry. After a while though people started being angry that I didn't delete it, so I did, then suddenly I must have deleted it out of shame. Considering the design was not stolen or even inspired in the first place, I was both surprised and frustrated by his decision to call his design the original. He obviously has every right to post a design he created himself in a derby where it belongs, but that additional jab was unnecessary and simply worked to pull in a huge number of votes from people who have no intention of purchasing the shirt. I have no issue with walmazan taking advantage of the situation, I'm just shocked (although actually not really considering I've been dealing with this bs for almost the years now) at how naive people actually are.

Also I wanted to clarify my comment previously about bringing back an old design- this is something that woot obviously allows and that I have done myself, but the actual hypocrisy comes in the form of the users who constantly bash the use of old designs suddenly jumping onboard and wildly rallying for one to print. You have no idea how many times adder has made exceptions for other artists doing anything that he normally attacks under the excuse that they don't do it regularly so its ok. When that post comes up nearly every week in some form, its hard to argue that it is not a regular occurrence across the board.

Taylertot, your lines/shading always seem to look "muddy" and detract from your subject. If you could clean it up it may positively influence your derby standing.

See, I still see a clear distinction in the designs because of the authority figure element. I don't think RamyB's onion is a bully at all, just friendly and a little stinky, whereas walmazan's is at the very least being accused of something. I mean, yes, OBVIOUSLY the concepts are related, but I personally don't think they're the same at all.

curli76 wrote:I can't believe I'm arguing over the intentions of an onion.

An anthropomorphic onion!! (But, yeah, agree.)

I'm a fan of both artists, and I'm not prejudiced in either way. I'm pretty sure I own shirts from both of them. I'm newish here, so I don't know what all the Ramy-hate is about--I'm just arguing that I think the accusations are a little off-base or at least a little too intense considering the clear differences in the concept.

And I like arguing on the internet. I'm trying to get over that. =(

Hm, looking at the pic on my work computer, it's really hard to see the outline of the shirt because it's so dim...not super important, but I don't know if my work computer is just excessively dim (likely) or if my home computer is too bright (even though I calibrated my monitor). Oh well.

Re: Ode Of O-Sensei

O-sensei signed his poetry and calligraphy with a zen circle called an Enzo, that looks like an "O." His brushwork was as mighty as his sword.

Inside the Enzo, representing the Moon, is the Ural Owl from Japan. By his side, the Oxen is a symbol for strength, hard work, and reliability, in Asian culture.

I did O-sensei confronting the Ox with his Jo staff in the old "Ukiyo-e" style. Ukiyo-e means "Floating World" and is meant to envoke a dream-like feeling. I originally was going to do the whole design in this style, but I really liked the way the portrait turned out and wanted to add a modern presentation.

It's really difficult to do a color portrait in 7 layers and "erasing" for the black. The entire design took 79 layers and 32 hours. I think next time I will try a "Minimalistic" aproach.

No fun was had during the making of this design, this was ALLLLL work (Garrrrrh), but I love how it turned out. I'm happy with it.

Grass is a tough color.

That's silly because it doesn't look like barf...who's barf is green like that??? Barf is not green unless you drank a bunch of Hi-C Ecto Cooler and I'm pretty sure they don't make that anymore.

I get so worked up about this because in college I made a watercolor painting of an avocado, I got the color exactly right. A panel of instructors at my semester review said the green looked like barf, too!!! I was like "that's what a freaking avocado looks like! They are brownish green, what the crap?"

I think Shrek is supposed to be green and if people think that barf is green... well you'll just have to show them otherwise!

I guess we're just going to disagree here; no, it's not a particularly original idea, but you're not going to convince me that these two specific designs aren't very, very similar, whether you did it intentionally or not (and I give you the benefit of the doubt here, for what it's worth). And I see nothing wrong with Walmazan posting his shirt and saying, with his title, "Here's mine. I think Ramyb's is very close to it in design. Judge for yourself and choose."

I (and many others) think it was too close to be considered a fair entry, whether you'd seen "The Original" or not. I know that people are quick to jump on you for any small thing, and that's not cool. Neither is referring to a potential customer as naive.

Out of curiosity, why do you think that you get the reaction to your work that you do? If you've been dealing with this BS for "almost years now", why do you think that is? Why are you the only artist on woot that receives incredible amounts of negative attention for absolutely no reason what-so-ever?

And before you make the "jealousy of success" argument, I'd like to point out Patrick, Tgentry, and Cho to name a few examples of very successful artists who have not garnered the reactions that you do, despite their success. Why are you so different? Why are you the only hapless victim?
