For anyone who's hazy on this hazily defined subculture's markers, try starting at Know Your Meme's documenatation of hipsterism.

I was surprised and delighted to learn how many ridiculous things have been endorsed while I wasn't looking!

hahahahaha! I'm with you:-) Hipster tipping sounds fun. I'm not sure you're correct though, I believe they only have "the appearance of riches" to quote a favorite of mine. NachOOOOOOOoooooooooooo!

My favorite part is his "meh..." expression. He rode old timey bikes before they were cool!

Awww, crap. Because I'm sure some of the woot shirts I bought at thrift shops falls into the "no one would wear normally" catergory.

Can I get a clarification? Does the animal(s) have to be real animals, or can they be mythical? IE- dragons, satyrs, etc...

EDIT: I find it funny that memes are banned, even though hipster anything is technically a meme on its own.

so i guess anthropomorphic vegetables and fruits are out.

OK, in an effort to make some sense of this theme (Hipster? I thought they were just socially awkward people trying to simultaneously rebel/fit in - you know, like always!)

Anyhoo, after some research I cannot believe I even did, I thought of a cartoon cat drawing I had lying around. What if I un-cute the face and give it that idc expression, give the fur a flannel plaid texture, and add the requisite glasses? I AM flannel. You've probably never heard of me.
Does that actually work? If not I got nothing, not even a concept to put out there.

Here are a few ideas I'm kicking around. Looking for some feedback. The images and composition will probably change these are just real rough.
1. Smart Cars Are Hip
2. Jelly Bands Are Hip
3. American Idol is Hip

I don't know if American Idol is hip anymore... I think it got too mainstream. I have to say, though, that I loooooooooove the Jelly Bands one. It has so many obscure music pun possibilities.

Thanks, these are posted for ideas only. I also think the jelly band jungle or safari could look pretty cool with the right lighting and shadows.

EDIT: I'm just unsure if placing jelly-band figurines (hip with kids) in a real jungle setting is on topic. They might want an elephant all loaded up wearing a bunch of jelly bands.

And - Smart cars are hip but the guy driving it might have to have something else besides his car to classify him as a smart car hipster.

Any thoughts?

I am not staff, but I didn't get the impression that it was a blanket ban on using an animal that had been used before. There's a specific image named Hipster Kitty, and apparently one named Socially Awkward Penguin. Don't specifically reference those. You can still have a cat or a penguin displaying hipster traits.

Good thing I came in this thread cause I thought we were doing a theme on Hippies. I didn't know there was a name for that sub group of people, I just called them by another name.

I think it's okay to do the same animals as the memes, just not make an actual "hipster kitty" design with the hoodie and glasses like the meme has. Memebase has refernced just about all the animals you'd think of and turned them into "hipster animals", but that doesn't make them really memes.

Hipsters are deceiving because they like things that are NOT "hip" at all. Smart cars would probably be too mainstream for a hipster. Instead, he'd make his own bicycle from old silverware... or something.

American Idol is waaaaaaaaaay to mainstream for the hipster. Hipsters listen to NPR on their vintage 1930's radios. (NPR is also mainstream, but hipsters think it's still underground so it's cool.)

I don't mean to burst you idea bubbles. Hipsters are weird.

*edit* Source of info: I live in Portland, Maine. It's the Portland that all the hipsters move to when Portland, Oregon becomes "too mainstream" for them.

Hipster bear is amazing, but that style of bike doesn't scream hipster to me. The 50's style bike's is what I'm reminded of. With or without the sweet basket for carrying hipster things.

Agreed. Make it a fixed-gear with a banana seat and handlebar basket... then I think you'll be a lot closer to "hipster".

Here is my progress. I gotta walk away for a while. I got more cleanup to do, and I'm going to distress the design.

I've read some comments that this style bike doesn't scream hipster. I live in a very hipsteresque neighborhood in Buffalo NY, and yeah, I see hipsters on a lot of 50's style bikes, but there are 2 guys that ride around on the old style big wheel bikes. I wanted to exaggerate in this that's why I went this route. I'm pretty happy with it though.

I think I've heard the term tossed around as an insult among some of my friends. But I've honestly never seen one in action.

In addition to the resource link earlier, here's the basic Wikipedia explanation of hipsters which is a decent starting point.

The feature that seems to best define it from a whole pile of other "I am an individual just like all my best friends" subcultures is irony abuse: Things are cool because they're uncool, trendy because they look awful, etc.

This subculture deliberately drinks cheap beer as a fashion statement. In Seattle, you can now find bars selling a can of PBR for $8, because now it's fashionable. Meditate on that until your brain explodes, and then you will understand hipster culture as well as anyone else does.

He's actually remarkably even-handed! Hipster culture doesn't take "inauthentic" as an insult, you see. Except when it does.

I think I'll stop now before my head explodes. For the purposes of a tee-shirt with no text, your best bet is doing some image searches to get an averaged eyeful of what people expect to see, and then pick out the details you find most hilarious.

Also, folks, please do not rip off anything found here, because Dynamoe is an insanely talented artist and should be respected.
