What happened to the days of landmarks to human achievement for no greater reason than the fact that we could do it? When will we ever again live the heady times of World's Fairs and Space Needles, Gateway Arches, and the like? Decorative, purposeless architecture is the best kind of architecture in our opinion, so we're asking you to come up with new landmarks for the world to enjoy. Sure, they can relate to a specific city or area (they don't call Le Mars, IA the Ice Cream Capital of the World for nothin'!), or maybe they'll just be some interesting and innovative building you think needs to be constructed. Let fly! Within these rules:

  • No text only designs. You can have a sign indicating the city if you must, or a tourism slogan if it helps your joke, but your design must have a graphical element.
  • No video games.
  • No Star Wars.

Interesting idea for a funny concept, but I was wondering if there is restriction on fictional places.

For example: "Visit Oz's world famous golden poppy fields, they're simply bewitching!"

Edit: Actually, it would probably have to be something about the Emereld city, as this is specifically about arcitechture, but you get my point, right?

Let's keep it to real places this time. We'll do a fictional place landmark derby sometime in the future.

EDIT: This has since been retracted so it should no longer be considered a guideline. See this post for more information.

St. Louis, MO gets to have a big Gateway Arch, I think Kansas City, MO deserves something just as awesome. Maybe a humongous BBQ grill? Or monument to Jazz? Or maybe the world's biggest fountain!

So a fictional building without any specific surroundings to show location is okay, but once you put that building in a fictional location it is no longer valid.

ok, so it's the landmark you add to an existing city, not deciding to call a city or region a new coined phrase. Got it... *crumples up sketch for The Bible Belt design (it's for the best)*

That totally takes the fun out of this derby. I was so thinking of doing a giant chicken coop statue for some mythical chicken civilization.

But hey, maybe I can come up with some generic landmark for something... uhm... I am totally lost again.

The Bible Belt is a real place though, I think he's just saying no fantasy locations. So no Wizard of Oz landmarks, statues of Pokemon, Mushroom Kingdom monuments, ect..

Not that I'm worried about anyone taking it but I call the state of Vermont! I know it's not a city but it's too small for that, it's where I grew up though...thinking something with either a cow or a sugar shack

Make a giant bottle of maple syrup with a huge "syrup-fall" cascading from it! I'm serious.

Who says you can't do a giant chicken coop statue for the home of Tyson or Perdue?

I'm thinking about a "Leaning Tower of Pizza" type design.

Edit: Did a search and found designs using the same play on words, but not executed the way I had imagined. Probably go ahead with the way I envisioned anyway. The only other idea I had was to have a giant litterbox shaped building constructed behind the Great Sphinx. Why? 'Cause it sphinx back there!

I think to do that design (plus i added to it in my head with the green mountains and a cow or two by the syrup stream) i would need someone to collab with...since i havent figured out halftones will probably try for it one way or another

so can we include other landmarks in our design? Will Woot's lawyers go get permission to use them?

I only ask cause I got into hot water printing a little college shirt that had a landmarked building in the background of my design.

People build monuments to weird things all the time. Having a monument about the glory of the poppy fields and their importance to the economy seems perfectly normal. The monument itself is architecture, it doesn't have to be placed in a city.

You gotta make it shiny and rounded, goopy, and kind of amber-colored. I think it could be done without looking like mud. Vermont does have a mud season anyway, lol.

I'm thinking a monument to Ziggy Stardust on Mars. Mars is a real place, so that counts right? I would have to be careful not to make it looks exactly like Ziggy Stardust though...

Having road tripped several times through the southern states I have to say that it might actually be difficult to come up with a unique design. I mean, think of a petrified reptile museum, and it's been done. Giant rocking chair? Done. Maybe a giant blue demon horse with eyes that glow like hell itself?

...Oh yeah, we've done that already.

Agreed. In a few short minutes I've found a giant paperclip, giant clothespin and, oh yeah, that naked dude fighting off some apparently pissed-off babies, in Norway.

Question? Thoughts?

So I had an idea for my landmark tee but I would like opinions if you think it's a waste of time and I'll get deleted. Personally, I think it's funny but some people may not.

Idea:
I automatically thought of the Rocky statue in Philly when I thought of useless landmarks and I had an idea to mash that up with Michael Vick. I wouldn't put his name on it, just his number (a back view of the statue) with hands raised and holding a football. But there would be a dog down the bottom of the statue lifting his leg.

Think it'll fly?
