Absolute rule it's not, but earlier submissions do benefit simply in that there are more hours for folks to vote.

To go one step further, tjost's 1st print way back from Derby #111 was a Monday afternoon submission which got 1st place. It has since become Woot's #1 seller too.

Today is 11/11/11, and I too predict that this will be #1 in the Reckoning next week.

Really, Portal is something of an instant classic. (The first one) is easily as timeless as many older, more recognizable franchises (read: Nintendo properties) So I'm not confident it's that much of a pop culture thing at this point. It'd be one thing if the first game had come out in the past two years or so...

We're artist, we respond to imagery, not literature. I got 2 stanzas deep, then i fell asleep. That rhymes, add that to your poem.

Every shirt site has more than enough pop culture designs to satisfy the crowd. Some go so far as to rely on it, and copyright infringement to stay afloat and be successful.

Woot is a pretty big company that is owned by a phenomenally huge company. You guys don't need pop culture to keep your t-shirt business thriving. You could still be a successful clothing line without any pop culture references at all. Why not leave the hackery to these sites that need it to stay afloat and actually do something unique? If you want to do a little pop culture here and there, do it, but do it in moderation. Most pop culture shirts are terrible and thoughtless. Why not cherry pick a dozen or so truely great ones a year to release during a woot-off? The variety on the reckoning would likely benefit, as would the quality of unique stuff. If an artist knew they had to be original to play here, you would get much nicer work from more people in the long run.

I'd like you to do a few other things, but this would be enough.

We exist in a world of pop culture. I think prohibiting it would be disingenous.

I, for one, find myself struck with one-derment at the coincidence! I guess for tjost, one is not the loneliest, but the luckiest number...

Well I gotta say im a little bummed/upset because I was wondering why the buy button hadn't started hoping yet so I looked at the sales preview sheet and saw that they have now raised the first day sales threshold to 6000 prints. Last week it was 5000 at least thats what it showed on epic failures sales preview page. Really feel like woots starting to penalize popular first day designs :s some advanced notice would have been nice. Just saying.
