Here's my tee. It's about the mathematics of gliding in nature. Flying Squirrels have evolved to have a thin, aerofoil-like body shape that gives them a really high lift to drag ratio.

Non-flying squirrels, well...

mattcom wrote:Fair enough. But to be SUPER fair, in the contest description, theres the line "Or, y'know, put two little birds on a shirt and say something wheat grass like, "LOL COUNTING!!!1!" "

I have 3.14 birds here, so using math alone that should be considered a win. But more importantly, i say to you, good sir, that mine own entry is just as, if not more, absurd and wheat grass than that....while in keeping with the spirit of the prescribed rule-set.

If 2 birds using the English language merely MENTION'ing something math related will meet minimum requirements than this one should as well.

And the .14159 mag-pi at the end, well the number could be referring to any relative measurement; weight, density, average feathers-per square mile.....take ur pick...im sure one of them could be rationalized as being the 14% proportion needed to be in keeping with the gag. =)

I apologize if I seemed too harsh. Good luck with your print.

I know it's not normally my nature, but I'd rather do it now then have to deal with a dozen entries like this later. See how I just used 'nature' there? Yes, it's a word, but clearly not what we are going for in this derby. We're looking for the other nature. So, no, finding a definition isn't going to sneak a non-nature related entry in this week. Be warned.

Thank you for that. Everybody knew what you meant though. Some people can't come up with designs to fit the theme, so they try to make the theme fit their design. It's almost as frustrating to see as thoughtless pop culture designs.

Nice! There's something a bit wonky about the nose, but I can't see it well enough to give advice. Otherwise, neat-o, and the orange really pops on the shirt color (and yes this, from me, the gray-hater).

CUTE. Sorry if "cute" wasn't what you were going for but my gender demands that I find cartoon squirrels to be cute.

Cons: So was the tank.

I have an idea for a design for this derby but I lack the time or artistic ability to submit it myself. If someone wants to actually design a shirt based on my idea, I expect nothing in return. I highly suggest checking to see if someone has beaten you to it before submitting anything based off of my idea because we don't need hundreds of repeats in the derby.

I call my idea "Surf's Up." The basic idea is someone surfing a sin wave or any other such type of wave as defined mathematically. I haven't really seen any trigonometry in the submissions I've seen so far, so why not give it a shot?

Oy with the Butterflies already >.< No offense meant at all as it's the perfect subject matter for this weeks Woot and many of them are wonderful artwork. Howsomeever as I am a rather unconventional "girlygirl" I would LOVE to see a graphic shirt anywhere at all that is feminine yet devoid of butterflies, warm fuzzy critters with big eyes, roses or scrollwork hearts. Someone? Anyone? Bueller?

As a math teacher, I was excited about this derby. Not anymore. Lots of bees and designs that just happen to be geometric/fractal-ed/goldenly ratio-ed. Nothing all that clever. Not even as good as the Pumpkin Pi shirt from Tuesday.

I must say, i'm pretty disappointed with this derby so far. Half of the top votes have either nothing to do with math, nothing to do with nature, or both. A marble falling in water? (neither) A guy conducting the northern lights (not math) DNA and chemicals (not math). Why do shirts like these get to stay?

The woot system of rejections makes little to no sense. I don't want to tinfoil or anything so I won't go into anything like that. But I do think it would be very helpful if rejections were at least given more feedback than "Can't print this" or "Does not fit theme". Would it be hard to write an extra sentence about what specifically the copyright violation is, or what aspects need to be changed for it to be a viable entry?

A perfect example here is the ninja turtle vitruvian (sp?) man. The first rejection did not give any details about why it was bad. The thought was, probably the theme song being included was too much of a violation. Then, that was removed and the response is still too much like a ninja turtle, the text was fine. Would it have been hard the first time to say "text is ok, image of turtle not enough of a parody (or just not different enough from copyrighted character)"? It is not like a huge number of subs get rejected anyway.

/rant off.

While I generally agree with the sentiment I must argue the point for the marble falling in water. As stated by the artist he was inspired by fluid dynamics which IS math in science, water=nature i.e. this fits. I even see this working as a simpler water displacement (also math in science)so that may have been a poor choice to prove your point.

IMO if you have to read the title to get why it's math and nature, it's neither. The marble could be falling into a lake but it could just as easily be falling into a toilet bowl.
