Why are the double bonds (C=O and C=N) not depicted explicitly aside from, I guess, the inference made from the number of neighboring hydrogens?

They're in there, they're just the same color as the hydrogen molecules and slightly bigger.

I really like this shirt but my days playing with the organic chemistry modeling kits and software make my inner chemist twitch to see the hydrogens and oxygens the same color...I don't think I'll be able to bring myself to buy it! *sob*

I've already got the ThinkGeek Caffeine shirt and the 'Got Caffeine' shirt, how many caffeine shirts is one man allowed to own??

However, this will be my first caffeine/gaming shirt, so I guess that's something new...

No, the sandwiched carbon forms a double bond with only one of the neighboring nitrogen. Contributes to caffeine's overall aromaticity, I guess.

Chemically speaking,

Double bonds are inferred from bond length, absorption energy, number of neighboring atoms, and bond angles. it's fairly valid to represent these with one line as some types of model kits do, as long as you maintain correct angles.

Atoms don't actually have a color. Most of the time carbon is coded black and oxygen red, and that's just arbitrary model kit coloring.

It's shirts like this that make me wish I still had the time and money to go to gaming conventions.

Might have to sneak some double bonds in with a fabric marker, but I love this shirt. I just won't wear it around the other people in the chemistry department. ;)

I think the success of this shirt hinges on the following logic:

People who like chemistry are nerds.
Nerds like roleplaying games.
Therefore people who like chemistry like roleplaying games.

If you're gonna do a geek shirt, do it right.

Needs double bonds, different color for oxygen atoms, and the label 120 mg 1,3,7-Trimethylxanthine.

120 mg is roughly the amount in a cup of coffee. 618 micromol would be an acceptable alternative.

This is a cute fun shirt, not a cheat sheet for your O-Chem class....let the lack of double bonds alone and accuracy go...we all get the idea behind it....This shirt is adorable. With every true gamer there is always a couple of cans /bottles of Mountain Dews, Rock Stars or whatever can help you make it through the night to beat that ridiculous obscure puzzle in some vampire/undead filled dungeon with a group of non stop adventures Win!

Is it nerdy that pretty much all the people in my life would point out to me the lack of double bonds? Lesson: If you are going to make shirts to appeal to nerds like me, the devil is in the details.

It is a Caffeine molecule, not a coffee molecule. And since the artist didn't add in an amount you don't have to be tied down to a specific cup of anything.

Yes....once you understand the coffee, you can rule the work force!
