Staff

Take a trip with us this week under the sea! We're big fans of water; so much so that we're composed of roughly 70% water. So this Derby is a call out to all our aquatic ideas, be they sunken treasure chests, playful dolphins, or intriguing octopuses. Just make sure it takes place under the waves (or at under the surface in the deep end of the pool). And yes, we know, turtles and penguins hang out underwater. But c'mon. Push yourself a little. Now for the rules:

No text.
No pop culture references.

I'll say it first:

Who else read that as "Underwear" for the derby topic?

I wonder what the brief for that derby would be... :P

So I guess anything referring to Little Mermaid would be pop culture?

An exclamation or a question mark over a character's head would be considered text?

I have something that got turned down for a daily that would fit this theme. What do you guys think? It's of cuddling cuttlefish, so I call it "Cuddlefish".

I had a print during a no-pop-culture derby that was roughly inspired by The Little Mermaid (and siren myths). But not a direct reference to the story. Seen here.

So, if you're just planning on drawing a mermaid it's probably fine? As long as it's not really about that story.

Not really of much relevance to the little mermaid to be honest, as far as I can see (please nobody say but look there's a singing crab!).

+1 for cuddlefish tho.

Staff folk,

can part of the scene take place under water, and part of it not?

I for one love the Animaniacs word filter.

I imagine if a bunny in S.C.U.B.A gear or a snorkle shows up they might allow it, although that would be pushing the bounds of good taste.

Sort of like throwing in a "Noooooooooooo" into the original Star Wars series.

Are you thinking something like a kid looking into a shark tank with the shark looking like he's going to bust through the glass in a Jaws-esque way? I was kinda wondering that myself.

Just how much water must be present for the design to qualify as underwater? Must the subject matter be completly submerged or will it be okay to show something underwater, such as a goldfish being looked at by a hungry cat?

Are old time stories & myths considered pop culture? (Granted there isn't a popular movie/show made after said story or myth)

Quick question, oh ye gods of the forum: Would the myth of the Bermuda Triangle be considered a pop culture reference?

Yes, anything that you can find on the keyboard is considered text.

Haha I had to hit 'reply' to see what the word really was.

Yakko was a terrific Animaniac though

One of my favorite exchanges:

Wakko Warner: Do you get Vertigo?
Yakko Warner: Nah.
Wakko Warner: Me neither.
Yakko Warner: Yeah. I've seen that movie three times and I still don't get it.

I had to do the same. I'm still trying to figure whether Yakko as a filter for that particular word is just a funky way they decided to use the filtering system this time around, or whether it's not so subtle statment on what the woot staff thinks of said Animaniac.

That said, I now have the Animaniacs theme song going through my head.

Ha! Good question. He definitely was a smart aleck, but his sarcasm was what made him so great.

I have so many favorite quotes from that series. So much that I appreciate more now too

Edit: I just realized google predicts the phrase 'are we dead or is this Ohio?' Another great Animaniacs quote

I'd like to see a good Davey Jones Locker design. Is it a sports locker, or a chest locker? Is he going to play lacrosse or hurling? Would he be wearing his old timey clothes, or current gear...so many possibilities.

Typically no. Historically, Woot has considered pop culture anything that has its origin in TV/Movies/Music.

at one point they defined it as anything referencing something that's not your own creation.

I think they've unofficially backed off of that definition though, as all references are not necessarily "pop."

Back to the derby topic at hand ... housing underwater? Or is that too political and/or too close to home?

The first one reminds me of Firefox! Maybe it's just the colours of it all.
I like the swirly aspect of it though.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I like the second one for that reason (seems more original, not that I don't like Firefox).

I love how odysseyroc can "knock out" two amazing designs in the time it takes me to even think of an idea to sketch. Awesomesauce. And I am a personal fan of the yin yang one, though I would perhaps tone down the colors so that they seem more translucent.

The pop culture reference ban is a good one, but it killed the only idea I had for a long time (was an iDevice parody).
