Then it wouldn't be "pistols at dawn"

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this or not, but I really hope cmdixon participates in this derby! He hasn't been around much anymore, which makes me sad since I love his designs so much, and this derby would be so marvelous for him!

I think it's beautiful, but I don't know why it's necessary to include the paint tube. It's just my opinion, but I think it detracts from the ethereal beauty of the image by grounding it too much in reality.

I think that's exactly the point, though.

I see what you were going for. IMHO the splashes really don't convey the idea of 'running' very well. In my head, it would be more like the trunk, feet and tail dripping - running like ink. Again, JMO.

Watercolors?! Gak! That's my worst medium. Thanks to my better half for getting some unique ideas churning. I've got something brewing though it won't be posting until late tonight due to real job, then birthday party right after then finishing the design.... but look for it! It won't drag on with the usual designs seen. It'll be great!

(i hope) ;-)

Staff

Can't wait to see what comes out of this one!

This week it's extra critical to get your files in as soon as you enter. Send them to derby@woot.com. It's best not to send them to me directly as Barbara and I switch off on the derby on a regular basis. We both have access to derby@woot.com, so that's the best place for your files.

Also, PLEASE, make sure we can see a close-up of your halftones. The whole point of your detail is that we can see the detail. Just a little thumbnail or swatch that shows us how those halftones are done can go a long way.

I see your point, I was trying to replicate the spiderweb effect when you oversaturate the watercolors, and then the paint runs, however, I think I already showed some of the oversaturation on the edges of the feet, etc so it would still make sense that the paint drips. Please let me know if this looks better than the other version. THANKS.

Very nice work already!

Just finished my design. I decided early on that I wanted to have birds from the smallest to the largest wingspan together, drawn to scale because I was curious what it would look like... This is what I came up with:

Being colorblind, this is a very difficult derby for me. Instead of beautiful colorful birds and critters and such, I took the flowing medium and turned it on its head.

No it was just white, creme, and yellow before. I saw they had added baby blue about an hour ago.

I think I'm actually going to come out of this with a decent White color shirt from woot... maybe even two.

FINALLY.

You too?!? If it wasn't for the bright colors of the wicked designs, I'd depress myself several times a week.

Adding blue so close to the opening...wow. I feel for the artists.

I really wish woot would swap creme for something that's a better shade of neutral. I have several shirts on it, but think they'd be SO much better on sand.

Huh. Maybe it was a hiccup while they were editing the blog to add the blue color choice.

May as well have added silver. That's light enough for this derby.

Have to say, I really hope we see some shake ups in the fog this weekend and some really strong entries taking the lead.

As feared, right now this derby looks like it's going to be another case of the bland leading the bland. (sigh)

Which designs are you rooting for?

I see a billion beautiful entries. I'd have a hard time picking what I felt was a top 3, cause there's way more that I like than just 3 this go round. *_*

yeah but they have an overstock of the other colors. those colors predominantly don't sell well or are used in designs. Its frustrating though that they chose to add light blue at the last minute. Would have been nice to have that as a color to consider designing with.

From the current fog, the two that strike me as having an interesting concept are "Out of the Blue" and "Glass of Watercolour", though I don't know if I'd actually purchase/wear either of them.

"Watercolour Cat" demonstrates lovely composition; although the overall design is maybe just a little too feminine for my personal taste, I'm happy to give it my vote.

I think "Give your Heart" made some really strong, bold choices in terms of colour-scheme; I'd love to see other artists take the same kind of chance.

The derby entires this week, as a whole, are amazing. I would have to say this is one of my favorite topics Woot! has picked. Now I just need to finish my own entry. Nice work everyone.

I must admit that's what stood out to me. I mean I just think it kind of limits sales because those colors aren't always the most flattering for some people.

I've only been at Woot since the beginning of the year, but I have to say this derby has some of the most beautiful entries I've seen. I wish they could be offered as prints.
