o... maybe that's why it looks different, or I am crazy. Either way, that sounds like a good way to halftone, I'll have to look up how to do it since I am photoshop newb.

My idea was that the cat is out of his element trying to climb the telephone wires, whereas birds are adept at it. I think it fits the "fish out of water" concept in that way. If the cat was in a tree or some other place that you always see cats hunting, then it wouldn't really fit the theme. Hope that clarifies my concept a bit.

I almost think the joke would be funnier without the palm tree, but it's still a great design. You've surprised me these past couple derbies, keep it up!

Hmm, interesting sounding. I would be interested in seeing some close-ups of the various multi-colored areas. I've been trying to watch the various ways halftoning has been done around here lately, and this method makes for a strong difference for the shrunken preview image in a way that makes it more impressive than some forms of halftone shrinking.

Do you apply them at any particular or varied angle? And do you use the same angle for different patches of the same color or different angles for different colors, etc? *curious*

This shirt has no connection to the topic at all. A badger is one of the four mascots of the Hogwarts houses. The fact that it's eating the snake is weird -- it makes no sense at all -- but that doesn't put it on topic.

I always apply them at the same angle (67.5 degrees)- for backgrounds and solid colored areas I use a round halftone, and for shading I use a line halftone. I find that keeping it uniform makes things look a lot cleaner in general.

Here are some closeups so you can see how it works:



The nice thing about it is that, when printed, it doesn't look like dots or lines but sort of "blends" to some degree with the color underneath to create a really convincing shading effect where the halftone is almost imperceptible

(edit)- I went back through the show us your woot thread to see if there were any photos from other times I used this technique. The best example I could find there was from my school design, where I used this to shade all the turtle shells- the colors are a little bright from the flash in this photo, but you can clearly see how the shading comes out really smooth looking, as though another color were used.

Line halftones especially, when properly placed, can really play tricks on your eyes and create great shading effects without getting excessively small.

Thanks for the feedback, drewdew01 :-> I was going for something adventurous and "excelsior!", but I guess it wasn't as nifty as I thought.
