Good morning! I hope this is a good Woot Off... and Rain, thanks for keeping me in the greetings. Baby Bee is at school, and I am sipping coffee.

tennbeekeeper...Just a guess, but you have hives? A friend of mine in NJ was recently reading about the hive losses, and thought she could buy a hive and 'release it' to help rebuild wild populations. Any thoughts? I said I didn't think it was a good plan, that supporting a local apiary would be better, or planting lots of bee friendly plants/flowers, but someone mentioned buying a box of bees that someone delivered and released in a garden. My understanding is that honeybees MUST have a hive and a queen, so pulling a box full out of a hive just shorted the hive, didn't establish a new one at all.

You are very right in your thinking. There are two very good reasons you are correct: One, the bees must have a hive, period, to survive. Secondly, "wild bees" are a thing of the past because with the world's trade, mites have come to America that kill the bees. Supporting a local apiary is the very best thing you can do. Honey bees are vital to good crops, from strawberries to almonds, and they can't survive in the woods any more for long. If you see a swarm, call your local ag extension agency and get a beekeeper out there to get them.

I'm hoping that I can get some space setup on my property to keep bees again. My dad kept hives when I was a kid, and I loved helping out. Just wanted to confirm that my 20 year old memories were accurate!
