Re: I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

Hope you guys like my first derby entry. Thanks to Collinvh (coloring)on this collaboration.
I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

The free bird leaps
on the back of the win
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and is tune is heard
on the distant hillfor the caged bird
sings of freedom

The free bird thinks of another breeze
an the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

I like how you designed this from the caged bird's point of view

schlady wrote:12 hours into the derby is still plenty early! Although many artists seem to be able to do it, it's an unrealistic expectation to think everyone needs to be camping out 'til Friday at noon with a finished design to submit. (I was on vacation this week so I was actually able to submit early, and it didn't help all that much.) A really good design should do well as long as it goes up sometime during the weekend.

im hopping your apple climbs up there as well. your apple and this raven are two of the 3 that i have voted for this week.

There may be multiple versions, but yours is Unique, and pretty good too, better than half of what I see most derbies!

Thank you! I really just enjoy playing around with stuff, one does need a hobby. Thanks for the words of encouragement.

Re: How Doth The Little Crocodile v. 2

Lewis Carroll "How Doth the Little Crocodile"

How doth the little crocodile
Improve his shining tail,
And pour the waters of the Nile
On every golden scale!
How cheerfully he seems to grin,
How neatly spreads his claws,
And welcomes little fishes in
With gently smiling jaws!

I sent a better picture to Woot, but they won't respond. This is our first time doing this and the shirt picture didn't come out clearly. I have a much better one that looks amazing but this one kinds sucks, I agree.

Because poems aren't restricted to serious literature! I think most everyone knows about Little Miss Muffet, but really, what has this gentlemanly spider done to deserve such a reaction? He seems dashing to me!

Indeed, agree with everything... although I don't have 30 shirts... yet... But it was definitely an awesome idea to use a poem from LOTR in this derby! Has my support 100%!

This tiger art is gorgeous. If this doesn't print, there is something fundamentally wrong with the universe.

Left side, midway down. 6 colors and must have halftones.
If you would like to team up, I would LOVE to just be able to do the art and not worry about the halftones part. Woot resizes for the kid sized shirts though, so some of the finest detail is lost if you get TOO fine with the halftones. So they cannot print something that looks like a full range of colors, such as a photo via cmyk, the mesh isn't fine enough. At least that's how I understand it. If you can work your magic to make the halftones look right as-is, I would gladly split the prize. (Not that I will be winning on my second derby, either. Heh.)

My email is this same name at gmail, if you'd like to discuss the next derby. I could always use design ideas also. Just let me know if we're going to do that next week, so I can plan on it. If I have a good idea, I want to try two different design styles. It took me twice as long to do the halftones and comp as it did to draw the art. :/

Sorry, rambled a bit there.

Sorry to clog up your page with this, but I would love to get others in th discussion. I don't read that as you must use halftones, just IF you use halftones, here are the guidelines.

Is there a more general forum area?

Re: That is not dead which can eternal lie...

"That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons, even Death may die.”
-H.P. Lovecraft

Though Lovecraft's work's often evoke alien horrors to terrible to imagine, I remember thinking of this poem after hearing my friends describe living in England. Their house was near an ancient ruined castle where many battles were fought, and they found it strange and kind of funny that parks and playgrounds have been built right over top of all these years of medieval history. Who know's what lies just under our feet, not really dead, but dreaming...

This is great! I would be surprised if this doesn't fly to the fog. I do wish it was a bit bigger on the shirt though- so the detail shows up better.
