Once upon a time, there was a little goldenthorn who enjoyed all sorts of candies and chocolates, among them being hershey's kisses. Little goldenthorn had an evil frogqueen of a grandmother whom goldenthorn had only ever met twice before. On the third visit, a most grand and stately occasion, little goldenthorn decided it was time to make friends with the frogqueen grandmother.
Goldenthorn ran up to the frogqueen grandmother and offered some of the hershey's kisses that she'd been eating. The frogqueen grandmother stepped back in disgust and sneered down at the child "oh, hershey's is so pedestrian! One should only eat the best quality chocolates, as I do. Really, little goldenthorn, your food choices reflect quite poorly on your upbringing."
Little goldenthorn was hurt and confused--she didn't get exactly what the frogqueen grandmother meant, but she could tell that her gift had been rejected and she'd been judged not good enough. Rather than cry, little goldenthorn ran back to her room, determined. If the frogqueen grandmother didn't want little goldenthorn's kisses, it was absolutely okay--she'd just eat them all herself.
And so she did.
A bag and a half of hershey's kisses later, goldenthorn had a most severe tummyache. Her mother came running when she heard goldenthorn throwing up. Concerned and disappointed, goldenthorn's mother scolded her for such bad decision-making. "But mama," little goldenthorn cried, and she told her mother what the evil frogqueen grandmother had said.
Goldenthorn's mother was furious. After cleaning up and comforting the little goldenthorn, her mother went right over to the frogqueen grandmother's rooms and told her right off. Of course the frogqueen grandmother was shocked and insulted by such confrontation and immediately took herself back to her own kingdom, without any sort of apology or gracious leavetaking.
Afterward, goldenthorn's mother explained to her what the frogqueen grandmother's words had meant, assuring her that they were empty. People liked different things and it wasn't okay to judge them just because it wasn't what you liked, like the frogqueen grandmother had done. She added that it was a lot more complicated than that, but that little goldenthorn would understand it more as she got older. Little goldenthorn nodded and hugged her mother.
As goldenthorn grew older, she did indeed begin to see all the complications and nuances in such a seemingly simple concept. She never had to see the frogqueen grandmother again, but goldenthorn was grateful for the lesson the evil frogqueen grandmother had inadvertently taught her. Goldenthorn very much enjoyed using "pedestrian" satirically, to both remind herself of the childhood lesson and to always be vigilant for her own hypocrisies.
She also never ate hershey's kisses again.
