My entry this week - at least my first one. I'm hoping to knock out a second before too late in the derby.

I think this is a good drawing. I hate to point it out, but her right hand has the thumb on the wrong side. I hate to see it not do well because of an oversight like that.

I'm going to put in yet another vote for permitting hand-lettered text incorporated as part of the design.

Now that I look at it, her other hand (or her wrist) looks pretty weird too. But the concept is fantastic.

I don't believe that's her thumb, rather, the "fatty" part of her palm. However, I agree it can be seen that way. I didn't see it that way until someone commented on it though.

I love where this one is going.

I wish I could participate in this derby. I'll have to see how much time I have this weekend. I've been working on a huge project (an eight panel, two sided brochure) for a very persnickety owner at one of my jobs. I when I saw the theme, I had this really great peacock idea, but I see someone else went that direction. I'll have to see if I can come up with something if I can get this job completed before the weekend is over.

Loving the peafowl so far. Gorgeous tail feathers! (I kinda like it as is, actually)

This could be potentially great. I can think of a few artists around here that can really do this style justice. Jewelwing and Drak or Drak/CD especially.

Here's my entry for this week:

I tried it on several shirt colors, but I really think brown compliments the palette. My wife's degree is in interior design, and art history was one of her favorite courses, so she pulled out her books, palettes, etc., as I was working (along with making some design suggestions to fit with the style).

This looks great. My only concern is if the shape is copyrighted or patented or similar.

1. Megan Lara - I love you
2. I love this theme! And there's no reason people can't make "fake" letters - using a border that traditionally would have held words but instead have branches/birds or nonsense squiggles
3. More than one person can do peacocks! I personally love them and they were quite prevelant in the style

Well, this is what I've made This is my modest tribute to one of my favorite artists, the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi, an important representative of art nouveau. I strongly recommend you to travel...someday...to Barcelona (Spain), a beautiful city with lots of buildings designed by him. This design is based on the windows of the Batlló house, in Barcelona.

I'm not sure about the lights in front of the trees (I made this to emulate the stained glass window), so if you tell me if you like that it would be great!

Rads - amazing! You really caught that same style on a lot of those posters.

Here is my first attempt at art nouveau... I don't think I'm going to submit, not sure if it really fits or works on a shirt. Oh well!

There are numerous junkyards and a few public squares w/ yin-yang Beetles in them. I first saw one back in 1986 or 1987 when I was going to school in East Tennessee (there was a big junkyard on a hill between Johnson City and Elizabethtown, where the owner had a sense of humor and frequently "posed" cars in odd positions). There is a similar display in Brazil, and another in Brussels, Belgium. Both of those used older model VW Bugs, so I used an amalgamation of a couple newer models that have simpler curves in them (to go with this week's style theme).

Hand lettered text incorporated into the design was a frequent element.

I think something this classy needs a French title, maybe "La Chasseresse." Unfortunately, my French is horrible, so that may not be right...

Maybe "Steampunk Apocolypse"?

I really like the design! But although you follow the art style perfectly, it's not very spring-y... Maybe you should force that into the title, like "Nuclear Spring" or "Waistland Spring Maiden"

Wow I really like the colours in this, and overall atmosphere, but it's missing something, some point of interest in there, something that even hints at a story even if it is just shadows amongst the trees. As it is it's a bit, well boring to be honest. A scene with no actors (not that it has to actors mind). Nice but dull, sorry (not trying to upset you, but I figure honest criticism, whether i'm right or wrong, is better than the usual guffawing you see on these boards; as it is, I like this but couldn't buy it as is)

Edit: lights are great too, keep 'em in!

thank you mailmanmo I really appreciate your criticism There's a small "actor" detail... An iguana on the left, in honor to his famous sculpture I know it is not what you mean but I wanted to point it out. It's just my opinion, but I think that sometimes you need no actors to tell a story. Here I want to get into Gaudi's eyes...like the way he saw nature Again, I understand your words, and I will really keep them in mind when doing this kind of design in the future, but in this case I've preferred to draw something appealing and evocative.

Radscoolian, I really like yours! You really catched art nouveau style there!:D

"No pop-culture" really means "don't use someone else's Intellectual Property". Unless there's a character out there that this is meant to represent, it's safe.

nono, what you've said makes a lot of sense!! It's only that if it was just a appealing nature image I also think some "actors" would be needed. But as this is not just a nature image, as it refers to an amazing artist, I wouldn't like that some "actors" steal the show to the main idea :D

But please, that kind of criticism is always welcomed! We are here to improve our skills :D

I thought there were some zombie entries and some alien entries that got nixed for "pop culture" in the past few months? Maybe they were referencing particular shows, but I generally avoid those types of things when the rules include "no pop culture"...

In order to be popped for pop culture you generally need to be able to look at the thumbnail and go " Oh a ______ shirt" where blank is something you'd have found on TV or in a Walmart in the last 20 years. I don't see a blank when i look at that. Now if you'd have replaced the Rad with an Umbrella, that would probably get popped.

That make sense?

@ Wirdou:
I like your design too! Gaudi was pretty cool.

@: Jasneko:
Thanks! I think Mucha may be my favorite alltime artist. It was fun to work on this design (so much so that I didn't sleep last night)

@logomachinist:
If it happens it happens. I think I'm safe though.

@ cdrewlow, cfdunbar, fofmock:
Thanks! And thanks for the name suggestions. You got me thinking french, so I think I'll call it "Mort-vivant"- "Undead"

@ orabbit:
Whenever I see "No pop-culture" I just try and stay away from parodies of copyrighted characters. I think it's basically woots way of saying "No Star Wars, Ninja Turtles, Mario" etc.

@Leahbh:
Thanks! I made the change!
