Re: Robo Nouveau

You did a wonderful job merging the two together. If you think about it, it's not that strange to have a robot among Art Nouveau; after all, lamps were a very common media for the style (if lamps can be media), so why not a robot?

It totally escapes me how designs like this one are always doing well. When I see designs like this one doing well, it completely explains why we never buy derby shirts.

To be fair people aren't asked to vote on what fits the theme best, but rather what they'd like to wear. The rejectionator is the one with the responsibility to weed out those that don't follow the rules, and until it does people will see a design- whether it be cutesy, off topic, or artsy- and click on "I'd wear it."

I like this one a lot more than the previous entry. The coloring and details are great. Plus, the other design just reminded me of "The Tyger" a bit too much.

ok. thx. That was all added after I read the pre-derby thread.

Sorry Rads, I love Mucha too.

I guess I understand the definition of pop-culture somewhat better now, according to j5, copyrights. I don't see any infringement here. Just sayin', when I see a design like this, even as cool as it is, I say, "Wow, somebody really digs that Walking Dead show.(and all the rest of the genre: Day of the Dead, Night of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Mucha of the Dead)"

Cute, but I'm one of those females who would be pretty uncomfortable wearing this design. Can cans on my um can cans? No, thanks.

I've been trying to learn about art nouveau since the theme was announced, so I freely admit that I'm not well-versed in the style. I'm just curious how this design fits - is it the border detail?

When I noticed that the original was gone - I could have cried. I would have bought it, but not this one. It's a nice design, just not my style.

While I like the design of this one better overall, I think the blue might be a bit dark? That and I just tend to think of orange fire when I think of phoenixes. :o

Re: In Darkness

I like this design quite a bit better than the old one. But the long wing feathers annoy me. The really long ones just look raggedy. A bird's flight feathers are much more elegant and form a neat line. If you're going for a fiery look, they shouldn't just be trailing behind.

But that annoyance aside, this one really does look better.

This isn't even remotely art nouveau. This is chibi or kawaii. Did you look to see what the style looks like before designing this?

Derby shirts win the derby because they get the most votes, not because you and your wife think they are wearable. I have one of Walmazan's shirts and receive tons of complements on it.

Re: Can-Can

Walmazan, I really like your art, but this entry simple isn't art nouveau. Not even close. I think the point of this derby (and many other woot derbies) is to get artists out of their comfort zone to draw something difficult or different, and this clearly isn't either. I just want to give you a friendly warning that you're art is starting to become REALLY REALLY REALLY predictable and monotonous.

Re: Can-Can

I also don't think this is Art Nouveau at all, sorry Walmazan. I respect you and your work, but I can't convince myself to see this as "on topic". The only things that sort of resemble the style are the swirly lines around the cans, but those feel distracting to me. It's almost as though they are pasted onto an existing idea.

Yes, the can-can dance was around during the same time period as Art Nouveau, but the dance doesn't really have anything to do with the art style. I'm open to changing my mind if you can explain why it IS on theme.

Re: Be unique

Inspired by the Spanish Art Nouveau master architect Antoni Gaudi. He didn't design boxes, he sculpted buildings as if they were alive.

If you're ever in Barcelona, visit Parc Güell. It's amazing.

See a BIG VERSION here. This is six colors on slate.

Thanks for looking!,
