Time again for another march toward t-shirt doom! Discuss this week's life-or-death struggle for sales supremacy as chronicled on the Reckoning page all week long.

Here's how the Reckoning week runs now: every Tuesday at midnight, we retire the previous week's lowest-selling shirts and launch this here discussion thread. Tuesday around noon we'll post the all-new, all-early Reckoning Recon. On Friday, we'll juice demand and prime the pump with a little weekend reminder post. Finally, on the following Monday, the Day of Reckoning post sounds the last call for the Reckoned shirts. All of those posts will be linked below. Monday night (or Tuesday morning), it starts all over again. The Reckoning, she is a hungry beast...

6 ramy shirts in the top 20... that seems like rather a lot! Anybody know the record for most shirts in the top 20 for an artist?

I noticed that too, and then I realized he had six in the top 20 last week as well.

Forgive me for not know the correct terms, but wasn't the last reckoning (maybe the reckoning before it...) a monumental occasion because all 7 foals had 1-20 spots?

I like how it's the exact opposite so quickly Reckon ALL the foals.

It was all 6 newbies who made it the other week. That was a weird one since "Xenophile" was pulled before the Reckoning even took place, so all 6 of the newbies survived that week.

In the past few weeks and months, the results of the Reckoning have varied a bit. Some weeks the newbies don't last, other times they make it onto the top 20 list and some older shirts are retired. It usually seems like about half of the newbies make it and the rest are gone in just a few days.

Happy Tuesday, y'all. Time to count up some sales and do the Reckoning Recon, as we do most every week around this time. We've had some pitched battles, some lazy coasting, and if we can take a minute to digress, some of the best Derby entries I think I've ever seen. Seriously. Some of you guys are really going above and beyond for Art Nouveau, and we appreciate it. Keep up the good work. Except for that one person. You know who you are. Here are the Reckoning standings as of when I copied and pasted this:

  1. The Formula For Success
  2. Leonardo
  3. The Tyger
  4. Casual Friday
  5. Hungry Hungry Games
  6. Artichokey
  7. Lucky Pig
  8. Shhhhhhh
  9. Only Memories (noob)
  10. Honey Badger Cares
  11. The Binge
  12. Nevermore
  13. 1971-Floppy Diskette
  14. Read
  15. Fire and Ice
  16. Lucky at Last
  17. The Start of Spring
  18. Family Breakfast
  19. Save the Trees (noob)
  20. Air Quoth

It has been a while since there has been any shirt sale during a reckoning, maybe woot's new policy is lower price on debut day only?

There was a kid's shirt sale earlier. Hopefully those with little ones caught that. I only saw it on my facebook news feed...

from past experience, if your numbers aren't the same, they do like having more than one source to pull from, especially if yours are lower than mine. I opened the pages as soon as wootalyzer popped up, so close to 2:15.

I cross-checked your numbers with mine before I deleted mine and yours were lower for every shirt: I'd been keeping an eye on woot.com around 1:00 woot time to see if the shirt sale popped up, but had turned my attention back to work by the time that the sale popped up, so I didn't start pulling numbers right away. If I'd had any numbers that were lower than yours, I would have left them up, but since I knew I hadn't been right on time, I'm certain yours are more accurate than mine.

Is someone planning to grab numbers at the end of the shirt sale?

I was curious about which shirts sold best relative to their pre-wootoff-sale sales, as opposed to which shirts sold the absolute greatest number of shirts, so I used Mavyn's numbers to calculate such a metric.

The Formula For Success 7.34%
Leonardo 4.57%
The Tyger 2.93%
Casual Friday 3.82%
Hungry Hungry Games 2.58%
Artichokey 4.72%
Lucky Pig 4.56%
Shhhhhhh 0.35%
Only Memories 3.64%
Honey Badger Cares 3.22%
The Binge 0.37%
Nevermore 0.31%
1971-Floppy Diskette 2.51%
Read 2.08%
Fire and Ice 2.91%
The Start of Spring 1.63%
Lucky at Last 1.12%
Family Breakfast 1.14%
Air Quoth 4.94%
8-Bits to Rule Them All 2.31%
The Little Things 2.85%
Save the Trees 5.07%
Where’s The Cheese? 3.72%
Don’t Walk / Silly Walk 2.00%
Happier Ending 1.15%
Naturestache 4.14%
Captain Green Beard 1.71%
Spelling Bee 4.63%

One thing that jumps out at me looking at the percentages: the shirts that debuted since the last wootoff seem to have a sold a greater percentage of shirts, regardless of the absolute number of shirts sold since debut. That suggests that people who don't buy a shirt on its debut day may wait for a wootoff sale, or that the wootoff sale brings in wooters who only visit shirt.woot during wootoff sales. I'm curious which might be the larger contributor, but I don't the data to answer that is available to mortalwooters.

My guess is the latter. The Reckoning is too volatile to wait to save a few extra bucks if you miss debut day, and as was noted obliquely we've had a shirt.wootoff drought for several months until yesterday. That, and it seems old favorites that had been slowly plugging along enjoy boosts beyond their current popularity whenever a wootoff hits. That could be people picking up backups on a discount, but it's just as likely new people coming on and saying, "Hah, that's a funny shirt, I want it!"

It also pushes folks who were "on the fence" to buy more than they "need to" ... which is why it was strange that they didn't run it for a few months. Yeah, the profits are lower, both for Woot and the artist ($1 ea.), but it's made up in the quantity.

Thanks to a woot-off, #187 was historic in that it was a 3-week old shirt was able to take the best seller title that week. AFAIK, it's the only shirt to ever achieved that title twice.

So do the woot-off sales count towards the DSR in the same way as a normal sale does? I've always been confused about this matter, and for some reason thought they were disregarded in the DSR calcs.

They don't, hence the need to track the before/after numbers. For the rest of this week, my nightly posts will have numbers for all sales, and then just for the DSR calcs.

Okay. That makes sense to me, as there's bound to be some weighting in regards to what shirts do better than others (I would expect newer shirts to sell better than older shirts during the sale).

I think I was confused about the reference to Reckoning 187 and how it allowed a 3 week old shirt to take the top spot. Is this just because the general woot-off draws in more customers during non-shirt-sale times, i.e. fresh faces for older shirts?

Or does the lower woot-off sale price depress future sales of newer shirts, thus artificially decreasing those DSRs while leaving the DSRs of older shirts relatively untouched (man that's a long sentence)?

Also, yay for my first quality post!

With six prints in the mix, woot should rename it the "Day of Ramybing."

In all seriousness though, this makes for a dull reckoning imho. I don't mean this as a knock on Ramyb per-se, so much as a desire that it be changed up. I almost wish that Woot would have a term limit or something in regards to number of prints that one artist can have in the cycle.

I mean, he has his own website for selling his stuff, and he has a six prints here on top of that, with a possible seventh in the fog right now.

I feel like a drastic change up needs to happen to the both the reckoning and the voting process to help keep things fresh. It would be nice if they just fogged all the designs and/or eliminated sorting by votes for a derby or two to see if that had an effect.

Does any one else feel this way?

I feel like the voting process does need to change, not the +/- system but the sorting by rank. Fogging an entry is the best way to get it printed, as it seems like the fog steadies out and designs do not move out of it to often after Tuesday.

I would be more enthused about possible fixes if woot were using AA shirts, as it is I did not vote or purchase any of the amazing shirts from the Open spaces derby. I have my eye on a few in the current derby that may print AA and have voted accordingly.

I think this is just as sad as the people who vote for specific artists just because of their name or just because there's a cute turbunguin on it.

I get it, I do. I'm an AA WS wearer. I hate the Anvil blanks as much as the next person - for more than one reason. But it's sad to think that there's now a new group to pander to - the AA loyalists who could/would vote on any halfway decent design that could print on AA.

I should add, I don't mean this as a personal "you", as in you're voting on crappy designs that would be on AA blanks, as I'm sure you don't want to waste those precious few on a bad design.

Anyway, the whole thing makes me sad for the artists. Mostly, with the notable exception of this week: If you don't design cutesy or pop culturey - well good luck. If you're not part of the popular artist clique - well good luck. And now, if you're not likely to print on an AA blank - you'll lose a whole other set of votes. I can see why it's so frustrating for newer artists.

NO. If he can consistantly make good shirts that are consistantly voted up and consistantly sell large volumes the *ONLY* reason to cut him off is personal: you don't like seeing *HIM* in the rekoning. I understand that you'd perfer this to be a forum on which artists can attempt to put forward less successful or unpopular designs in the name of art, but it's not, it's a retail outlet for shirts, and his sell.

Remember to that the whole Thank you/Appeal we saw for Nevermore about 2 weeks back was based on the fact that these people get paid for thier designs (though as narf has pointed out, not as much as when Nevermore started) and saying "no more ramyb" is the rough equivelant of firing him from his job because he's good at it.

Fogging is based on votes. By Tuesday they've had 4 days of voting, and things are pretty well set. It's possible to get an awesome design in on Day 5 of 7 and get it up through the ranks, but not easy.

The only real solution is to go over to a blind submission window, where all shirts must be in by day X, when submissions close, all shirts are posted up, So every shirt has exactly the same amount of time to get votes. The overhead on this would be pretty bad though, and you'd need more than 7 days in a cycle, which means and extra week of lead time.
