Yes, Astronomy, the science of celestial objects! We're big fans of space, you know. Big, BIG fans. We love stars and planets and galaxies and all that stuff. Heck, we've got a lifesize cardboard cutout of Neil DeGrasse Tyson in our bedroom breakroom. This week, give us nothing less than the heavens themselves. Show us your mastery of astrophysics, nebulae, comets, black holes, and more. But don't be afraid to dive into the meatier stuff, too: the celestial motion, celestial navigation, gamma rays, and telescopes and the like. Just remember these rules:

  • No pop culture riffs.
  • Mathematical text only. If you want to show a formula, fine. But no other text.

What's with all of the "no pop culture" derbies lately? I am getting sick of these artsy shirts. Can we please have a fun derby again soon?

It puts the crap inside the bag or it gets the hose again.

Given the number of shirts that have been pulled because of copy right concerns, I suspect this rule is going to be around until shirt.Woot can sort out specific rules. It's a hazy line, and difficult to know what will fly and what will result in a lawsuit. Even having to defend a design is going to cost them a lot of money, so I can't fault them for being cautious.

Yeah, because there aren't hundreds of websites churning out thousands upon thousands of pop-culture shirts.

Have you been on Woot lately? They're kind of everywhere, and I'm rather sick of it.

Hey everyone,

I was thinking on resubmitting my "Underwater Galaxy" with a few changes...

What do you think?

BTW, what are the rules for resubmitting a previous derby design to another derby?

Edit: I plan to submit a new design too.

10 in 30, so long as you define Monty Python as Pop Culture. Of those ten 8 aren't from Derbies, and of the 2 that are from Derbies one is eight months old. Since 15 of the 30 are derby prints there's a FAR greater instance of Pop culture in Non derby shirts (50%) than in Derby Shirts (13%).

Also, of the 7 that will be voted off teh island, only 3 are popculture right now, and there's a chance one of those 3 will be replaced with an non-pop by Monday.

It's not that art isn't fun, it's that people who have a wealth of thought investing in pop-culture (read 75% of people) find insperation in pop culture. Derbies which exclude this exlude those people as well. The fact that 33% of the shirts woot currently prints (see above)including 3 of the top 5, show that there's a demand for it.

No pop culture derbies tend to have 1/3 of the submission rate. I really want to come up with a design for this one, but I'm not coming up with anything but Pluto and pop culture.

Resubmits must have 'significant' changes made. There's not really a better definition. Re-arranging the elements won't cut it, you'll need to add, remove, change coloring, etc.

That's because it takes skill and creativity to think of your own ideas or clever interpretations on a theme instead of just mooching off somebody elses previous work.

There are thousands of pop culture tee sites out there because ANYBODY can come up with that stuff, it's not special.

So we'll do a fancy one, get 1/3 the options, Ramyb, PatrickPens, and 1 other guy will get thier shirts printed, they'll survive the 3 weeks it takes for newb status to expire, then be reckoned with fewer sales than a Pop Culture shirt would have done on day 1.

I have a designed I started awhile ago but never finished. I'm thinking of completing it for the derby.

Really rough sketch of it (colors definitely not final):

It's a chicken constellation sitting on the planets in our solar system.

The background is actually an inkwash I scanned. Not sure if I'll keep using that or if I'll just redo the background digitally though. The reason I never finished it before is because I'm having trouble deciding how to proceed with representing the background and the nest in a deep space kind of way.

Exactly! Great point! Why would anyone want choice? My gourd! What's the point of McDonalds offering chicken nuggets? EVERYONE wants burgers, NOBODY eats chicken. Down with chicken! Burgerz roolz!

Also, for those caring, here is a graphic of derby pop/non-pop restrictions going back to Derby 206. It has nothing to do with which entry won in each, only which derby allowed it.

Personally, I think you should go more along the lines of what you did with 'Fire and Ice' and maybe use similar textures with planets and/or stars or whatever else that inspires you in this next derby.. but that's just my opinion.

well since the derby theme is recycled why not recycle and rework a previously subbed derby design. I present "Hipstars". I can hear the moans already. I was hoping to see if woot would consider glow in the dark on this as well having the glasses and stahce glow in the dark.

So the last space related derby was about a year ago? It's one thing to have just a couple of weeks in between similar contests, but I feel like a year is a reasonable amount of time. Plus, there are some folks, like me, who only joined within the last year, so while the topic might seem recycled to some, it's new to others.

In woot's defense, there are only so many topics that they can come up with. I'm sure there are times when the folks at woot are saying "what the heck should we do this week?" After a derby that had distinct guidelines (you had to know the art style in order to enter), this topic is a bit more open in terms of what people can come up with. There can be the more artistic ones, but then there can also be ones that skew towards the crowd that likes the cute designs.

It's called forcing people outside of their comfort zone.

I like pop culture, I generally find it amusing. I groan every time I don't see that rule up for derbies, however, because it means it will be flooded with Mario/video games/ninja turtles/etc. The world really only needs so many Legend of Zelda shirts.

They don't actually have to think that hard - there's a multi-page thread where people have suggested tons of great themes that could be used for derbies.

I like the pop-culture bans... It seems like every time we have a pop-culture derby it turns into a festival of TMNT, nyan-cats, etc. There's tons of other shirt sites that offer that sort of thing; There aren't many that offer what we get here.

Derby 246 - 2 of top 9 were pop culture
242 - 2
239 - 4 (This was Year of Birth, so it was pop)
238 - 3
237 - 3

If we're flooded with anything it's Kiawii or turtle/bunny/penguins.

Also, for the one who asked, blacks are Second Chance Derbies, so everything was a previous submission.

And just for References:
246 - Animals in History of 138 Submissions
2 Ninja Turtles, 1 Mario, 0 Zelda/Nyah cat/video game, 0 Turles, 6 Bunnies, 8 Penguins, 16 mice!

242 - One Word (spell your image) of 350 Submissions
2 TMNT, 6 video game, 0 Mario/Zelda/Nyah cat, 1 Turles, 1 Bunny

239 - Year you were born of 196 Submissions
