Every Kid Needs A Robot: Chris Ware T-Shirt Benefits 826michigan

by Jason Toon

If you’re unawa- uh, if you’ve never heard of him, let us assure you that Chris Ware, designer of today’s shirt Onward Robots!, is a genius. His Acme Novelty Library comics are as bitterly funny as they are achingly lonely – unbearable and irresistible at the same time. Ware’s stuff deserves every accolade, huzzah, and kudo that’s been heaped upon it, and we couldn’t be happier about bringing a little piece of it to the world.

Especially since the artist’s proceeds will benefit 826michigan, the Wolverine State affiliate of the 826 National project. Founded by hotshot scrivener Dave Eggers (McSweeney’s, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, various other things that make you wonder what you’ve been doing with your pathetic life) at 826 Valencia in San Francisco, these writing centers work with local kids from 6 to 18, developing their writing abilities through free workshops, tutoring, writing rooms, and other resources. Oh, and they all work out of awesome front businesses, each plying a different fantastical trade. 826 Valencia is a pirate supply emporium. 826NYC offers superhero gear. And 826michigan holds forth in the rear rooms of the Liberty Street Robot Supply and Repair Co. in Ann Arbor. Hence the robot on today’s Chris Ware shirt, see?

We want to thank Chris Ware and 826michigan for doing this with us. And we want to guilt you wooters into buying this shirt. Come on, think about all the other tripe you drop coin on. You telling me a midnight snack at Hardee’s is a better buy than a Chris Ware benefit t-shirt for the kids? Anybody unmoved by Ware’s poignant automaton and/or the pro-happiness, pro-fun mission of 826michigan must be some kind of – pardon the expression – robot.
