The great mass of the population trudged through dreary lives of darkness and toil, clad in itchy, ill-fitting, unflattering rags. Their drab misery was broken only by an occasional sacrificial spectacle of blood and mysticism, when charlatans roused the fearful mob to crush those who had violated its social norms.
