Kinda my imagining of a Soviet Propaganda shirt.

Oh, show me round your snow peaked
mountain way down south
Take me to you daddy's farm
Let me hear you balalaika's ringing out
Come and keep your comrade warm
I'm back in the USSR
Hey, You don't know how lucky you are, boy
Back in the USSR
Oh, let me tell you honey

I would love this, but Apple Records owns this image. May get knicked.

This derby is too good already. I wish I had the artistic talent because I just had an idea for an interesting shirt. I think there are going to be far too many good shirts this derby and woot should probably dedicate a week and print 7 instead of 4.

this is super freaking awesome and I want it in spade. I love (the look of) Soviet propoganda posters.

will you get in trouble from the Abbey Road reference? is that considered intellectual property?

I figured I should chime in and give people a better idea of where I was coming from. The song "Back in the U.S.S.R." is a spoof of the beach boys Americana style. I like it because in that light it's probably the Beatle's funniest song, especially the "Goergia on my mind line"

This was designed as if the song was completely serious. The image shouldn't get rejected because it's a parody of the Abbey Road album cover. Just like the Red Hot Chilie Peppers can take the same picture except naked, I can use heavy handed Soviet imagery to cast it in a completely different light.

The parody call is a tough one for this, but I think the damning evidence is the existence of http://tinyurl.com/24yled. It seems to incorporate the same art work.

If you bothered comparing those pictures you'd see they weren't the same artwork. That's what a silhouette of abbey road would look like. That's like saying, hey, a skull, he must have stolen it, reject.

Perhaps the silhouette of Abbey Road is proprietary. The link in a post above is to a silhouette.

The thing that most disappointed me about this rejection is the insinuation that I copied someone else's work that is completely untrue. I hope this accusation gets taken back but I doubt it.

It really does look the same to me. I don't think you used that image (the coloring makes that obvious), but the outlines are the same or nearly enough.

EDIT - And to sate my curiosity I compared it to the original album cover and that other shirt. No, it's not the same but it's still pretty darn close in execution. Call it an unfortunate coincidence.

I would love to see this altered enough that it meets some ridiculous standard and resubmitted. I want this shirt more than any other on this site so far.

I'm glad you compared them, I wish Joel had gone to that trouble...

I call shenanigans on this being rejected. Alas, when there was finally a shirt I really wanted to buy, it got rejected on the basis of not so good reasons.

Definitely. This is the number one shirt in the derby for me. He used the Abbey Road silhouette. Big whoop. It's the most iconic image on the Beatles there is. I say let it back in!

And that is why it should be out. The abbey road silhouette is owned by someone. Besides being an incredibly pandering design (I'm of the impression that all attempts to incorporate band imagery should be axed, because that's creating knock-off fan merch, not inspired designs) it's a very illegal-to-profit-off design. Besides that, it's been done before. Woot is not about to stick their legal necks on the line, especially when there is merchandise with the same image on it. let alone the designer not owning the image. You really want an abbey road shirt? Check ebay. I'm sure there are 100 there for only a few dollars.

Uhm, that'd be the problem. Do you think just anyone can put something like that on a shirt? it's called a copyright.

No. The problem for me, is that it wasn't rejected because of the Abbey Road thing. It was rejected because someone made a silhouette of that and Joel assumed it was the same or stolen. I'd me OK with it if it was rejected for copyright reasons, although the parody argument is pretty strong.
