no dogfish or catfish guys. i had dogfish hiding behind under the left bottom side, and catfish on the right, but they were really ugly. and it would have been another hour to finaggle the color right.

Hey, it's still kick a**. Being a proud owner of the original 12" vinyl since it came out, it's alternative. Not Sisters of Mercy alternative, but still off the beaten path. And grats for winning second for your first printing! Got first wooter, just to prove I liked it too

Jimiyo.. you're a color master. Even if I could draw like you, the colors would never quite fall right.

You say you do a lot of "emo" stuff -- do you do merch for any bands? Just curious..

This reminds me of my Dad and his midlife crisis electric drumset - the look on the lobsters face is what does it. I have always found your artwork fantastic but too much for me to wear on a shirt - this one I might actually have to pick up. BTW I love the change to the bottle too.

heartluce: thanks for the Vote!

mjc613: thanks, i tried to go against my norm and it worked!

redghia69: thanks, your ferrets http://shirt.woot.com/Derby/Entry.aspx?id=11206 are pretty great too. i love the colors and the poparty feel

geekfactor12: you are in the fog of coolness i listend to that song on youtube. dudes were on the roof singing and getting doves out of a cage to let go. it was a really old video. i didnt know they made videos before Friday Night Videos. hehe

TAYLORT5: likeness of drummer... hehe... its not supposed to take the whole shirt. i guess you could say its a max size print shown on a small shirt.

wizard7926: not done much for bands. just contests, and some freelance, although id like to make a living as a professional contest winner... or at least something where im selling only all original art not custom to a client, that way i can draw what i wish. besides. bands... hehe... majority, have no money. HA. although i have thoguht about it. it would be rad to sell shirts at band shows. except im real sensitive to crowds and loudness.

Sojj: got you because you love the b52s eh? AWWW man, love shack would be an awesome shirt. just as long as its not dirty. thanks for the vote!

klswoot: thank you. i figured id give color a go. having seen your designs. colors do really add a punch!

aceface7: thanks! :j

artulo: thanks artulo! fingers crossed. i hope it prints, mainly because i always like to see the translation. i used to work at a shop doing nascar designs, and the best part was seeing the product, especially after doing the seps, becasue you never know how the print will do, well.. never is harsh, but you know. its like baking a shrinky dink.

Andy47420: Andy... you dah man. like your avatar this week. ehheh and running with the devil. HA!

ansharp: thanks. yeah, the drums i admit I didnt spend to much time on. I mean, all three are duplicates of each other. hahah.

suzyottomatic : thank you! i agree, many great artists here. and i know you arent discrediting the simpler designs. i wish i could do something without going crazy with details or textures. it feels so unnatural to me. i attribute it to OCD. hehehe. really its not smart commerce wise, unless you can find a niche market that will celebrate your mental illness. HA.

zillabeth: i dont know you, but i love you because you love it. heeehee

FearTheGorgon : fear the gorgon. i think i got the wrong illusion. you arent named from ATHF, fear the gorgatron are you? gorgon is something different? i somewhat agree with the bg thing. it seemed so simple without anything. he was just center stage nothing else. seahorses are in the song though, and the repetition of them in the drum should tie it in a bit. im glad didnt make em all loud and green colored like i orginally thought about doing. thanks for the vote.

stannley : thanks for the props! *giggles*.. mid life crisis drum set.... thats a very intrusive outlet for a crisis eh? yeah, more happy bottle, non alcoholic!

bluchez: thanks man! yeah, Geeko... was just giving me permission i suppose. hers stand on its own cause its a totally different style. which i really like. if you notice the stuff behind the lobster is a less saturated color, although you dont htink twice about being able to see through the lobster. its good art!

so... you want to be Bluchezo?

hope i responded to everyone. Cheers!

I was studying this shirt, and I thought to myself, do lobsters have teeth? So instead of asking that question here, only to have one of you wikipedia it, I wikipedia'd it myself.

"A lobster actually chews its food in its stomach, rather than its mouth. Food is chewed between three teeth-like grinders in what is called the gastric mill."

I haven't clicked on the 'I Want One" tab yet for Jimi's Rock Lobster. I'm sooooo close to voting for this one. The art gets my vote definitely...but I'm not totally sold on it as a tshirt. My only hesitation is the amount of ink used in the design. Every time I wear my AA shirts they feel so thin and I wonder how they will support a design like this. I'm nervous about how the design holds up after being washed/dried after reading a few comments in the other threads regarding cracking.

I bought Jimiyo's pirate shirt. Great design. Amazing detail, but very ink heavy. Feels a bit strange on the thin AA shirt.

Still getting a design like this on a $10.00 shirt would be a great deal. I think my votes on the fogged entries will have to wait until the last day. I can't choose my favorites quite yet.

Re: Inspired by B52's Rock Lobster

Just curious, are all prints fairly bulletproof? I thought that maybe it was just the darker tees as I was surprised by the amount of ink on Rampage. Maybe it is just the AA tees, don't get to print on those to often.

Totally with you. This is unquestionably a great illustration. I see however that many people are convinced of its (in Dr. Evil voice)..."wearwithall?" I'll reserve judgment on the purchase, but an easy vote for one of the best designs I've seen. Well done.

darker tees need a base white underneath the bright colors so they dont lose intensity when it hits the black shirt. so it causes a bit of thickness.

klswoot expressed some concerns about cracking/etc. - that ought not happen. thats the printers fault. if they are using plasticol, and curing through the oven right, plasticol shouldnt crack for a long time. that stuff IS bulletproof. but from what i read, it seems they are learning. i think it takes a few years before a printing factory finaggles all its stages into perfection. theres screens, inks, curing, palettes, the output film, etc etc. quite an ordeal with many stages for things to go wrong and each stage affects each other and the final product.
besides, if cracking is your concern, it should be a concern for you for ANY shirt with more ink than something like 'Grow'

"klswoot: My only hesitation is the amount of ink used in the design. "

i dont think rock lobster has equivalent ink coverage as the pirate shirts. ive even left some shirt color in the eyes, eyebrows, drums, etc etc. small breathing holes. so i dont think breath ability should be an issue.

on the pirate shirt, they i mistakenly put it on heather gray. one of the gray ink colors should not have been printed. but it was also on heather as well, which is usually a heavier ounce than normal colored tees. it does feel heavy, but really, pirate... he's supposed to be framed and put on the wall. HHEHE. joke jokes.

klswoot

quality posts: 0 Private Messages klswoot

Thanks Jimiyo for commenting on the equivalent ink coverage with lobster vs pirate. I like the idea of the 'breathing holes' and I'm going use that advice for future designs as well.

One of the recent cracking comments I read was on Zenne's wave shirt...Sailor posted it I think. The shirt was only put in the dryer and not washed first...so perhaps that is one of the problems. Jwink offered some advice about how to better care for the heavier-inked shirts. So, I'm going to give it a try with the Two pirates ones we bought.

BTW- did you notice my comment about the yellow trim on the left-most drum? Thought that might be helpful if you hadn't already sent the print-ready file.

Thanks again for taking the time to comment on the ink concern.

np, i think its good to bring up quality issues. although im not sure if this information will reach the majority of the entrants and start to affect their work, but for those who are interested seriously in tee design, i think this place could be a great learning center. im compiling all information about designing shirts, etc to put in a tutorial. just a generic to do and not do kinda of thing, not a tutorial on how to do art. more logistics.

i appreciate the note on the trim too.... i have already sent in the file, so im not sure if if i can fix it. although, im not confident that rock lobster will win.

hehehe... now for sillyness...

will you give me your vote, say if i, animate your swan shirt? ;)

You'll get my vote...and a buy...if it's in the top 3. My family live on an island that celebrates an annual summer lobsterfest....so I'll have to buy at least one.

You can still send in modified print-ready file. Just let Joel know that it's the corrected file. Several people have done this in the past and I know you and Woot want to offer the best version of the shirt possible. I know it's just a tiny fix, but since there's still time to submit the file, I figured I'd let you know.

And....a tutorial would be very helpful. I'd love whatever help you can offer. I've learned a lot in the derby forums from the more experienced designers and any advice is certainly appreciated.

As for the animated thumbnail....NO...You'll get my vote if you DON'T animate the swan. Those moving ones drive me nuts. I've never hit the ESC key so much in my life.

Good luck to you and to all the nearby contenders.

Ha! Really, a Biology Teacher?! That rocks man. I tried to maintain some accuracy... apparently lobsters have

4 pairs of walking legs... Pereiopod
1 pair of pincher claws... Cheliped
and some swimmerets and a couple mandibles.
I can now show you where their anus would be too.. No joke.

If you look, my boy is missing some pereipods and mandibles, and also... has eyebrows and teeth.

Dude, 5th? This is so much better than any of the top 4 :-(

The only one I even like is the lime and the coconut. Oh well. Better luck next time (I'll be keeping my eyes peeled).

I've only been on woot for a short time but this is the best shirt design I've seen yet !! My heart sank when I checked the winners this week and this design didn't make it !!! LOVE the Rock Lobster !
