Re: Fireweed - Flower of the Yukon

I went in a totally different direction than most people. Like US states, the provinces and territories of Canada all have their specific emblems. What started out as an idea to combine all of the provincial/territorial flowers, I ended up using just the gorgeous fireweed, the official flower of the Yukon. It is an on-theme shirt without being obviously about Canada, thus requiring no explanation to wear every day. Well. Not every day. Unless you wash it every night, please.

You and I were totally on the same wavelength!! Awesome Fireweed, you did it justice where I could not. My Trillium was an easier execution after spending all night on the other one.

I loved the trillium, too, but I thought the fireweed made a more interesting natural shape on the shirt. I had a neat array of flowers in a swirly pattern, but I couldn't do them all in only 6 colours--some were white, some pink, some purple, some orange, some blue...bah!

Very pretty. I like the shirts that aren't glaringly obvious Canadian references, because I have absolutely no affiliation with Canada or anyone from there whatsoever. T_T My only hope to get a shirt out this derby is if something like this wins. ^-^

Thank you! I tried to choose something that is definitely Canadian (though in my research I learned they also grow in the colder climes of Europe) without being obviously Canadian in a way that requires an explanation.

way feminine, but i might buy one if it wins anyways...you get my vote regardless. i like the contrast with the black background alot. the pink glow on the preview gives it an overpowering girly aura, something you might want to be careful with your next submission.

Thanks. I'll take that into consideration. The ink itself should be more purple than pink when printed, if that helps win any guys over.

Not having bought a single shirt yet, still can't vote, but you should know you'd have my vote if I was able to get it.
I'm not a girl, and would look a bit strange wearing this, but I could definitely imagine a few of my girl friends wearing this happily. And for Woot prices, I'd be glad to get it for them.
Maybe this will be my shirt devirginization, and I can vote for your cool designs in the future, but until then good luck getting printed .

No woots yet..Hoping to get started soon. And started entering derbies.

It's actually reasonably warm in the Yukon in the summer. Americans have a general misconception about Canada, believing it's always cold. Summer in the southern parts of Canada is no different than summer in the northern parts of the US they sit next to. Summer in the Yukon (the generally habitable bits, at least--not the 'Land of the Midnight Sun' above 66o north) is around 25C/77F.

Of the three territories and ten provinces of Canada, I thought these were the prettiest official flower.

No, I can't. I got one shirt from shirt.woot that is a lower edge placement. The bottom gets all bunched up at my waist. Definitely doesn't work for me.

I think if you try to pinpoint the demographic, you'd end up missing it. Designs just seem to click with people sometimes, and I don't think you can predict it. None of the shirts you mentioned were printed, so I don't think they quite had it either (well, this week's pancakes might...don't wanna jinx 'em!). Just try your best each week! ^-^

Thanks for the compliment. I wish I knew what the voters liked. I really thought that my designs last week would have done well, but they were in the low 100s by rank at the end of the week. I find that when I do a shirt I really love, it tends to do well with the voters. My single print so far was a design I loved, and I'm really happy with this one, too.

I think there are a lot of 20 year old guys buying, but I'm not sure they're all voting.

I am an artist, and wish I knew photoshop to enter my ideas on woot; my medium is glass instead. Anyway, some of these have made great gifts for family and this particular design is awesome, I'd buy 2! Ditto- I think that's even the norm for me lately. This is the first week in a long time where I've done anything purely vector-based... and personally, I tend to like the detail of hand-drawn stuff better than the precision of vectors.

The derby has a way of rewarding ideas just as often as it rewards execution, so I think even first-timers have a great shot at a win. Take a chance and give it a try, people.

i really don't understand why this shouldn't be rejected. The theme is Canada, not the Yukon...it would be no different than putting up California's state flower for an "American" theme.

I understand completely the desire to have something that doesn't scream Canada, but woot made Canada the theme, so we're stuck with it. I think this is pretty and all, but doesn't seem on topic to me.

for the record, it also grows all across the northern U.S. - it was a scourge in the early twentieth century in areas that were heavily logged. The novel Fireweed by Mildred Walker (A great book btw) is set in a logging town in northern Michigan.

Are our states not part of our country? I guarentee you people would do things like the Statue of Liberty and the Golden Gate Bridge if we had a US theme, which are both state-rooted as well. Fireweed doesn't grow exclusively in the Yukon, as pointed out. It is a cold-weather flower that thrives in a lot of Canada. But it is the official flower of the Yukon, which has a symbolic, great white north sort of feeling for a lot of people.

I tend to interpret the theme given in an unusual way. Sometimes that works out--Innovation, and now this. Sometimes it doesn't. But I stand firm that, just because I've approached the theme from a different place than most of the other entries, doesn't mean my interpretation is invalid and should be rejected. If you have concerns, please hit the tattle button instead.

I don't think my reply was particularly 'sensitive' or 'defensive', though I'll admit you have me mildly annoyed right now. Your own reply showed far more emotion about it than I think mine did. What I did do was calmly explain why I think my entry is valid, addressing your original points.

I suggested using the tattle button because that is the appropriate place for these matters. The tattle button was created to try to take the accusations of ripped off, off topic, and otherwise inappropriate from the derby thread(s), with the added bonus of allowing the woot gods to make sure they know about every little complaint. Frankly, I'm just sick, as a member, buyer, and designer, of seeing these comments in the threads themselves. You may not be alone in your opinion about my shirt, but you are the one who actually expressed it, so it was to you I addressed my reply. It is disengenious of you to get annoyed when I offer a rebuttal of your critique, as if I have no compelling reason or right to defend my work. Rest assured, I will not waste my time in the future. Thank you and have a lovely day.

Edit: I meant to say, and will add now, that an honest critique would be fine. Don't like the colour, the style, the design itself? I'm okay with any and all of that in a thread. Tips to improve, suggestions for next time are even better. It is only the comments which should be using the tattle function instead which bother me. I would actually like getting more comments from people who don't like it, if they are constructive. The 'beautiful!' type are good for my ego, but not good for me to improve my skills.

This brings up something I've had on my mind. I try to post problems I see in an entry in the thread first before I tattle. If it's simple, like "This needs to be on a shirt template" it gives the designer a way to resubmit before being rejected. Sometimes it's more complicated, like "please explain how this fits the theme", where I would really like to know what the designer had in mind.

Bottom line, I think there are times where things can be cleared up without hitting the tattle button, but it takes tact and an open mind to make that work.

I don't like the leaves at the bottom of the plant. It seems like there should be more detail to them or something. The flowers are emerging from the plant not only from the sides but some are pointed at you and away from you. The leaves might have looked cool if they were the same way instead of simply growing out from the sides.

The stem is kinda boring as a single think line. The lighter pink might have worked well to highlight the stem in some way.

I really like the flowers though, thats what makes this shirt good. What programs did you use to create them? Did you use a tablet?

Thanks for the crit. Very helpful, and exactly the sort of crit I was talking about.

I tried to get the leaves to do a more realistic take, pointing in multiple directions, but every version I came up with looked dumb. I settled on the slightly less dumb-looking-but-less-logical leaves you see here. After I submitted I played around a bit with highlighting the stem more; there are actually 4 different purple/pinks in the flowers, and some highlights on the stem. They didn't show up well (the lighter purple used is only a shade off the darker), and I'll remember to use a more obvious one next time.

I used photoshop 7, and a 3x5" wacom tablet that's about 8 years old. The whole mess got run through vectormagic.com, but it didn't make any noticable difference.

The whole mess got run through vectormagic.com, but it didn't make any noticable difference.

vectormagic.com is amazing.

edit: if shirt.woot.com wants people to make some incredible shirts they need to have a list of resources somewhere on the site to help people out. vectormagic.com should be at the top of the list. eww a write us button at the top of the page. Thats probably where i should be typing this.

You're welcome! I found it in the forums ages ago--like derby 9 or 10?--and LOVE it. If you're going to go the free png download route, make sure you leave a large blank border around your image you're actually vectoring. They now add a watermark to the bottom or side edge (depending on the orientation of the image) that you'll need to remove after the fact.

I've been surprised by the ups and downs of this derby... maybe I shouldn't be, but there seem to have been an unusal number of out-of-nowhere responses.

Having looked at who's been in "new hotness" I get the feeling that I'm, sadly, in fourth now and might be the next one out of the fog if I don't get some more support soon. I could be wrong, though. Hopefully I'm in third or better right now. Gosh, the not knowing is really tough. On the one hand people have been amazingly supportive of my design, and I'm really happy to have reached so many people. On the other hand, the other three shirts came into the fog almost at rocket speed.

At any rate, I wish you luck and maybe at least one of us will get printed.

Here's hoping for another pair of tie scores so we get five shirts again. :-)

Why thank you. You've been an extremely nice person too. Refreshing, isn't it, to not have catfighting amongst close competitors?

Actually, I think what Woot should do (regardless of the votes) is offer the two "leaf motif" shirts for the price of one, northern lights and yours together (they're both bottom of the shirt designs and will work well for people who don't tuck their shirts in :-), and then the periodic table and whomever places sixth (which looks like it will soon be "Get Busy" (no offense to Shigwarm, but the kid is gaining on you fast). Since they're both light colored shirts, it'll be a great two-for.

What do you say, Woot? How about a six-shirt special to welcome our friends from the north (and stretch that American dollar) ? I bet you'd get a ton of people who would buy all six just to thank you. ;-)

Yes. Did I just out myself as being able to write it in the first place?

I figure some of them might. I know a few Aussies with active accounts. They ship the shirts to US friends and when they have a full flat-rate envelope it gets sent along.

What could be better than a shirt fit for spring? The spring equinox is on the 20th of March this year. Why cling to winter? Spring is here!

Disclaimer: Shirt contains no actual pollen, until you go and rub yourself up against pollenating plants. May cause allergic reaction in people sensitive to pink or purple. Macho coffee and/or beer is prescribed to help alleviate symptoms. Some people may find that this shirt gets them the ladies and/or hot young studs. This is a normal reaction; only contact your doctor if the problem persists when wearing other shirts.

Fireweed

(Epilobium angustifolium

The Yukon chose the fireweed as its floral emblem in 1957. The fireweed is a tall plant with many small, dark pink flowers. It grows in places like clearings or next to roads and rivers. It is called “fireweed” because it is one of the first plants to grow after a fire.

Sadlly, it seems that the two of us are still at least 40 votes shy of getting printed. I sure hope there are a bunch of absolutely last minute voters who will come to rescue one or both of our shirts... or maybe that the Wooter in charge will see how very nice and civil to one another we've been, despite being the closesest competitors this race and he'll decide to print us anyway.

I'm not saying that'll happen, but it would surely net him at least 500 shirt sales from each of us, yes? Gotta have hope. :-)

That would be lovely! I think printing the 4th and 5th place as very limited run (1500 total?) and second-day prices would be quite profitable for woot. On the other hand, it doesn't fit with the one shirt/day thing. Otherwise, we'll just have to hope for a best-of!
