Re: Fashion Capitals of the World

Dress Forms shaped into major fashion capitals: Madrid, Paris, New York and Los Angeles. The legs of each of the dress forms are supposed to look like wrought iron and are shaped into additional names : London, Milan and Tokyo. Colorful shapes are used to give the look of fabric wrapped around the dress forms using the various letters and colors.

Me too! I liked the red too. But, I think the blue is probably more versatile and I actually love the Woot Royal tee in person. It's a beautiful color!

Please vote....fashion's losing ground to beef, chicken, bananas and birds. Did I make the dress forms too skinny..what's with all the food surrounding this entry?

Thanks for the votes thus far. I really appreciate it!

Thanks! I'll try to stay optimistic. But, the rate of votes on Friday is a pretty good indicator of what the general voters will do throughout the week and my little fashion entry seems to have stalled.

We'll just have to get some of the fashion designers and their classmates to vote this week.

Thanks Nate and Attila! Personally...I adore this one! It's losing ground though and keeps falling. I knew it had a female focus, but couldn't shake the need to make the design. I was hoping maybe some of the male woot voting contingent would like it well enough to consider voting on it as a possible gift for mother, wife, girlfriend, sister, friend, etc.

No problem. It was a lot of fun to create and I'm happy with how it turned out. Plus, I got a call from my dad who looks at my entries each week. He said it is favorite so far. That made it worth the effort! (He didn't even realize the wrought iron stands were made out of words too.)

Hey...maybe I can make your list this week though. First-time. *wink*

I agree with Atilla, this is one of the most creative designs, and also my personal favorite of all your entries. I know its no consolation but your doing good considering the girls club appeal of the design. Maybe if you had perched a zombie crow on the shoulder eating a burger, hehe.

This is still the most unusual design of the derby. Yes I would have liked red, but I do not think the shirt color is affecting the votes - you still got mine!

This is a very boy-centric derby, with skulls and ravens, beef and pacman.
This design is more of a "girl's" design, along with the florals, and more men vote than women apparently.

After I get the tribute shirt vote notice, I will switch my signature.

You know what? We need to open a women's t-shirt site so all of us who do "girly" shirts will have a chance to have our stuff printed and sold.

I love Woot but I fear it's testosterone-driven, especially with the 14-year-old boy crowd. No wonder we're saturated with zombies and skulls! We need a place where ladies can be ladies and girly shirts can rule!

And where we can have shirts with U-necklines and shirts in winter with long sleeves, and... and... I'm sure you get the picture.

You are so right. The bellyaching heard all during the Water derby was quite dismaying. And it's not as if the winning designs were ultra feminine. After all, we are talking about tshirts, not delicate chemises!!

The funny thing is that all the water derby designs made it into Woot top 10 and have been selling well. Jaden's Nessie has actually increased its rank since its debut in the top 20. I think Zenne's wave would have fared better had it not been for the odd colors that woot chose to use. So, there are definitely buyers who like the non-skull, non-zombie, non-death, non-robot, non-nerdy designs. I just don't think these buyers are also voting in the derby. Consequently the derby winners tend to have a more masculine focus. That's okay if they are selling out and people like them. But if they aren't selling out or lasting well after their debut, then one would suspect that the voters are not choosing the designs that the buyers really want to buy. If this is happening, then woot should choose a few of the remaining daily slots to help promote artists who offer a more female-oriented design.(And not offer designs that just reinforce the stereotypical designs already abundant in the derby.)

People were a bit harsh when my enchanted garden design printed as a daily...saying it was 'too girly'. Yet, it printed beautifully and sold over 1000 units as a daily. This is actually pretty high for a daily offering. I suspect that women bought the shirt for the most part. But, it does show that there are women buyers. I just don't know if these buyers are also voting in the derby. If they are, they are a small segment of the overall voting demographic, I suspect.

I must admit....I'm in shock that we had a Spring derby and I didn't buy a single design. When I first saw the derby announcement, I predicted I'd buy all 3. Guess I see Springtime much differently than most people. I was really surprised to see a winter (dead tree), a robot crushing butterflies and a zombie win a Spring Derby. They are great shirts and very well done designs ...I just expected at least one to have an optimistic, colorful interpretation of Spring.

I don't see many in the text as art derby that I would buy either even though there are some very creative ideas. They just don't appeal to me as a shirt.

OK, I decided to actually do a bit of research here. Hope it's helpful in this discussion in the future. Let me start by saying I AM A GUY.

So, I visited link to see what I thought. My laziness excluded it to only shirts printed in 08.

These are how I would classify the shirts, I very much know that this isn't how everyone would. My main separation was robots, goblins, and skulls for guys, flowers, cute, and rainbow colors for girls. I am not trying to imply no women would wear the shirts listed in Masculine, or that no man would wear the shirts listed in Feminine, but just trying to pick what I felt was a target audience. I chose those shirts that didn't have a specific audience that I could tell, or those that I could not imagine anyone wearing, or those that I could give the benefit of the doubt to in the Borderline or Neither category. I know you will disagree with many, but I did have 2 women go over my list and make corrections they saw fit.

Derby shirts are shown in bold.

Hey interesting collection of shirts. Don't know if I totally agree with the categorizations of what's feminine vs. masculine as I'm sure we have different opinions given our gender and our likes vs. dislikes. But, I do love how you highlighted derby vs. daily shirts. And, I liked seeing what you thought were masculine, feminine or both. Thanks, Bluchez.

Well, even if you disagree with a percentage of the classifications, which obviously I expected, it seems pretty apparent there isn't a large discrepancy of derby winners sleighted towards the masculine side, at least to me. Feel free to offer your corrections via pm (or open) and I'll be happy to make changes to my list.

I did try to exclude what I would wear from taking that into consideration, because there were plenty that I thought were too girly for me to wear that I put in Borderline.

Thanks for taking the time to do this, and thank the women who helped you from me. This certainly gives us some food for thought.

The first thought that comes to me is that every derby is different, in that we do not who is going to vote or for what. There are some eternal discussions, but somethings are NOT predictable, and do not follow a pattern.

I actually agree with the majority of your classifications and I do agree that the bulk of designs seem to fit in 'appeal to both' category. Maybe it comes down to a difference of opinion based on one's age and the design. (i.e, if it's meant to be humorous, artsy, trendy, nerdy, dark, happy, spirited, angry, etc.) It's really subjective and for the most I think the voters and woot do a pretty decent job at trying to get designs each week that tap into at least a few different demographics. I'd just hate to think that they are losing interest from one party or another based on the derby outcomes or the daily selection.

Actually there are 7. Check the stands....You missed London, Milan and Tokyo!

Tried to cover as many as I could with just three dress forms. Madrid and Paris just worked well given the shapes the shapes and the type of dress I was trying to create with the forms.

Thanks for looking. Were you tricked by the wrought iron stands too? My dad missed them entirely when he took a look at my listings this week.

Thanks Narkus! No big deal. It was a fun derby. Can't say I'm enthusiastic about any of the highest vote-getters this week. Nothing jumps out as a 'must have'....but that's not really a problem as I've spent a small fortune already.

Don't forget to buy your Koi shirt this week....still holding on in 19th position. Keep their swim alive. Thank you!
