This one's public domain since the author died over a century ago (or so the internet tells me). And gracias.

Great job!
With respect to the maker of the "nevermore" shirt, I like the look of this one better. Either way, though, I'll be shelling out for another asphalt tee next week, I suspect.

Sorry, it's not the whole thing; just stanzas 1,2,3,7 and a bit of the last one. I tried to limit it enough to keep the text readably large, and selected verses that would preserve the flow of the poem. This is just a tribute remix.

Hey, just wanted to note that this is the original text. There are no spelling errors, just outdated spellings since Poe published it in 1845.

Yeah, I was about to PM the artist about the spelling errors when I figured out what was up. Oops.

And as that indicates: I read the shirt. I think many of the voters have.

Re: Nevermore

I'm not really an active woot person, but I like looking at the designs and I order shirts now and then. I don't normally write, but am now because I'm a little surprised that 3 of the 4 designs made it to the top 4.

I like Edgar, but I don't get this shirt. It's the outline of a raven and a line by line copy and paste job of The Raven. There is nothing poignant about it. This artists could have also just written "The Raven" in the shape of a raven and it would have had the same effect. He could have also written "This is the only poem I've ever read" in the shape of a Raven. I guess if that's how it was treated or "The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe" then at least it would leave you thinking there was a possibility of it being tongue in cheek humor. At that point it would be ridiculous. Right now it just looks like someone taking himself seriously. People wearing this shirt would also look like they take themselves too seriously.

I get the Nevermore one I guess. I like the Abraham Lincoln one because Lincoln is awesome and is drawn well. There's good detail in his face and I guess I've always had a soft spot for people with acromegaly. But on the same principle as the Poe shirts, I guess I'm surprised that you can make it that far by just quoting something famous and drawing a picture to go with it. Seems a little elementary.

I'm a little surprised that he Poe ones specifically made it into the top 4 though when there is more thought and artistic talent put into so many of the others. I'm not trying to be mean to the creator, so please don't take offense. I'm just being critical of the taste of the people voting here.

Has anyone seen the cow parts one? The body is a wonderland one? I think those are clever. But that's me and I always think biology is funny. If I was more of a hippie, I'd totally be into the Pi/Pie one. I'm also a jerk and don't wear band tshirts.

Hey Doug, great post. You write your thoughts well, and as a designer, I appreciate the critique.

Certainly the design is a bit simplistic, but I put real thought into what parts of the poem to include. In terms of art or time, this design might not rank well, but the goal of this derby is to make a shirt that will appeal to consumers like myself. In almost every derby, I make two designs: one that takes a fair amount of thought and effort, and one simple idea that has general (I hope) visual appeal. You'll find the former in this derby with about 14 votes labeled "The Poet's Arsenal". It's frustrating to spend hours on a failing design, but informative.

In that sense, it's with wry humor that I observe this doing so well. But no one is being fooled or cheated, nor should they be mocked for liking it. "The Raven" does not lose any poetic merit because it is popular. Plus, ascii art is awesome.

The goal is votes, not esoteric humor or lofty references or anything else. That way, the voters win, woot wins, and artists get better insights into what designs are the most broadly appealing.

I think the "taking oneself too seriously" thing is a dangerous view. It can be a vague way of insulting someone by saying "that person should have my priorities instead." I do see where you're coming from, and you may read this thinking, "wow, 5 paragraph response; I have this guy pegged."

Now, if you just want to make sure I have some sense of humor, here's my irregularly updated blog.

I greatly prefer this Raven; love the visual effect of the bolded text as shading! The thumbnail looks great, which tells me that the shirt will look great from afar even before anyone comes close enough to read the 'punchline,' which is always something I take into consideration. I voted and would definitely buy.

I agree. I'm so sick of seeing derby after derby filled with copycat items. And while the artist claims that this took a lot of thought, how telling is it that it was entered after the other was already racking up the votes?!

Look, the design on it's own isn't bad. It's just not terribly original. In fact, all of the images that are like this (including the Lincoln one in the fog) are just cheap knock-offs of a decades-old concept.

At least the other raven in the fog made a real statement. That poem kept reiterating the one word: nevermore. And that raven really drives that point home. Including half a poem in the shape of a raven is just weak by comparison. Honestly, I'd love to hear what Poe would think about your editing choices. I'm sure he would've felt that those verses were the extraneous ones. <wink>

Look at the times these were entered; this was 5 minutes after the other one, and you'll notice that I entered another design between the two. I can assure you this took more than 5 minutes. We had the same idea and both entered them when the derby opened, it's as simple as that.

As for selecting verses, have you ever been to an art gallery or heard a tribute to a composer? The gallery/orchestra selects certain pieces from a corpus, conforms them to the space/time restraints, and charges the public admission. Even the best singers in America perform only the first verse of our national anthem.

Also, in defense of both of these entries, I saw them both entered early; it is impossible that they were copied, for anyone who has any doubts. You could say that the fact that they both came up with a similar idea speaks about originality but that's not the argument here. These were not copied from each other. It's an unfortunate coincidence and now they are both likely to be printed. Don't be upset with the designers of these shirts. Be upset with the voters if you must be upset with someone. Otherwise be happy that you're saving your $10. And if you like them be happy you can have two ravens.

And now everyone should hug or something. ^_~

Great shirt. This may be my first .shirt woot (assuming it's not given the ol' irish elbow in to fourth)

Only complaint is it doesn't have the line "quoth the raven... nevermore." Comeone, that's the most famous lie I would say.

that's what makes it slightly less passe. besides, the other one is NOT more original... look inside any angsty goth 17 year old's notebook and you'll see that exact design.

Don't get me wrong, the Poe loving angster in my is going to buy both *and i'm pissed the sparrow didn't win), but this one definitely takes the cake... (pie?)

I disagree. First of all, I don't consider Poe to be goth at all. Maybe I'm out of touch, but Poe is just more of an artsy thing. Second of all, it takes a lot more originality to create an image from a few letters than it does to slap some text inside of a shape.

I still commend haxrox on a winning idea and a very clean and excellent execution, but I would have much preferred to see the winners be those where text was manipulated and drawn in unique and interesting ways, rather than just having lines of plain text arranged into a shape.
