Re: Dragon's Hoard
This turned out really awesome Spryte. GMV
Re: Dragon's Hoard
I think I'd prefer a bottom right or bottom left placement, but this is a great illustration. Plus I don't have any shirts that are this color.
Re: Dragon's Hoard
you create such intense details, Spryte. Wow.
Gorgeous! gmv

WOW! Spryte.. this is over the top.. excellent work...

Thanks! ^_^ Sorry I've been gone all day...

I messed around a little with placement but ultimately decided to put him up on a mountain instead of in a corner. If I'd placed him in a corner he would've ended up in the scrunch zone on most people and I like him too much to let that happen. ^_^ Thanks for the vote!

I'm flattered, thanks! And thanks for your vote too! ^_^;

Thanks! ^_^; I <3 dragons, as you know. Speaking of which, where's that sketch? ^_~

Yay 100 votes! Thanks to everyone who voted! ^_^

Re: Dragon's Hoard
I am going to be SO disappointed if this does make it into the fog. I've been waiting for a good red woot shirt since I got here.
Amazing detail, *mashes the I'd want one button with the might of Zeus' fist*

PS - It's on cranberry, if that makes a difference. ^_~
Of COURSE the Dragon would do this.
It turned out great... but stuck down in 18th place? People have no taste!

this looks awesome on the deep red of cranberry... adds to the richness of the gold and your amazing details really well.

Of course. But...nobody knows me as that here. ^_~
As for the low rank, that might be because I submitted it early Saturday morning and missed the initial rush. It might be a lot of things. Needless to say now that they've upped the ante I don't think I'll ever get printed.

Yeah, fail
Re: Dragon's Hoard
Apparently posting your process is all the rage for the dragon shirts (at the request of bluchez). I have no sources for this dragon but here's the sketches for the process... (click for larger images)
First, I tend to draw on lined paper because it's what I have and I'm moving to Japan so I want to get rid of it before I leave. ^_~ Some people really freak out about it but I don't mind. I finished the head first because head-to-body ratio sometimes gives me trouble if I don't have an exact face in mind, sometimes even if I do. Then I outlined his wings. I wanted them a little more ragged because his head and tail are so flowy.
Normally I ink it all at once but his body was giving me some trouble and people wanted to see what I was working on. Unfortunately, the work on him was split up because I was busy. Not having that continuity killed me and I feel like I should've had this done at noon, but whatever. Anyway, that's his head pretty much finished and the beginnings of the body.
Added some scales, inked the tail, added some shading underneath the tail, which then forced me to add scales to the entire tail and rest of body because I didn't like the way they looked. Really I didn't want to fill the whole thing in with scales because I was lazy. Figures, right?
The finished outline, pre-editing. All I did was remove the lines in photoshop, the pencil lines were erased before I scanned this version into the puter. Yay hand drawing! ^_^ The gold was added after I finished colorzing him. I made a small clump of gold that I layered around 50 times to make the gigantor heap. Hopefully you can't tell. ^_~
Also, here's the two uploaded versions I have of the colorizing process. The first is what I posted in the Derby Cyberpub and the second is the final version pre-gold.
Not sure if that's what you were going for blu, but there you have it. I hope you read all of it.
PS - Now will you vote for it? ^_^;

Definitely. I really appreciate the response. It was really more of my attempt at helping mjp feel a little better about his entry, but I definitely appreciate the work that you and redghia both have shown. I tend to like to see progress shots and am too sleighted towards only wanting original artwork (I'm talking about what I like to see, and what I vote for, not what woot accepts or is "good"). I try not to just point out clipart used or curiosity about source material (at this point, I have many times in the past), so unfortunately, sometimes suspicion will actually prevent me from voting for something. I'm glad that you girls (?) took my comment to mean something, and put forth the effort to show off your detailed work. Thanks again.

Yes, girls. It was kind of fun to write it all up, so no problem. In the future I'll probably continue to do this with entries I really like because I tend to send progress shots back and forth with a couple people anyway. Although I tend to dislike my designs after looking at them for so long. Hee. Anyway, glad you read it and stuff. ^_^
In the future if you're ever curious about my work please ask and I'll post the process, depending on what I have saved. Most of my work is loosely based off of some photo I take (often it's just me in a mirror posing or holding stuff so I can get the shape I want). This time, like I said, it came out of nowhere.

Actually, ‘guys’ would have worked better for me....
I like to see design process too, especially when there’s something that can be learned. It’s interesting to me that you ink right on the lined paper. I’ve tried sketching/drawing in pencil and inking on tracing paper, and that all worked, but then I’d spend forever cleaning up artifacts from the scanner. Do you have the same troubles? Maybe I should try lined paper. ;-)
Anyhow, your dragon’s very cool, as are the colors used. And even knowing the coins are copies of a smaller group, I still can’t pick it. Very cool.

Erm, okay, guys then. Thanks! I'm glad you can't pick out the coin layers.
For my drawings, I vectorize and it cleans it up for me. ^_^ Then I go in and fix anything I don't like.

Wow, I wasn't able to check in for a day or two, so I just found this little thread and REALLY enjoyed it. Neat, to see some of your process.
Great job! Deserves more votes than it's getting.

A little last-minute love for the red dragon? ^_^

Sorry, I was quoting what you said about how it will probably never get printed. It's a bummer.
