Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
Sorry it's so late. Wife's car lost brakes and stranded the fam at a McD's. At least they got food while I picked them up, dropped them off at home, and ran back. Whew!
EDIT: Sorry this doesn't have my name on it, this is SkekTek (on wife's account) - password issues.
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
Conspiracies! YAY! Love it!
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
Turned out great! *votes*
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
Oh man, this is funny. It amazes me how many people believe it was faked. It's like people have the time to concoct elaborate conspiracy theories but don't have the time to point a telescope at the moon and look at all the stuff the astronauts left there. I think this shirt is poking fun at all that silliness, yes? Love it.
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
wow, i really hope this wins! awesome shirt!
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
Thank you folks for all your support! Really means a lot to me! ![]()
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
Go Skekky McSkekerton!
Revel in the foggery!
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
This design is good, but the year was 1969 and that's clearly a digital camera with the LCD on the back. Maybe you should consider resubmitting with an older looking camera
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
also, the overhead lighting appears to be directly over the background or the astronaut, yet all of the shadows are going in the same direction. I think it would look better if the camera had an old-school flash ![]()

That's a viewfinder and the lights are closer to the viewer than you think. I'm sure of it.

Plus, it's like...dude, we have no idea what technology was *actually* available to the US government back then, DO WE?!
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
wow, great image. I really like it. I hope it wins. I would totally buy it.
mjl9320 wrote:This design is good, but the year was 1969 and that's clearly a digital camera with the LCD on the back. Maybe you should consider resubmitting with an older looking camera
It's actually pretty accurate for the cameras at the time- there was an optical viewfinder, and that's why you only see the silhouette. The overhead lights are just for show. I had a big red light on the top, but it was distracting, so I took it out. Since it's in the fog and doing well, I'm gonna let it ride...
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
I love this. It reminds me of a scene in hairspray when Tracy gets on the corny collins show and penny goes to her house to show her parents and edna says
I read all about it, it's a big fake hollywood set. You think I'm gonna think he's really up there
then penny says, it's not john glenn mrs turnblad!
Yeah. I've seen this movie a few times.
I'll definitely stay up til midnight to buy this shirt.
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
Love the shirt!
If I recall correctly, I think one of the main arguments behind the "theory" that we didn't go to the moon is that there's apparently no wind on the moon, yet the flag was blowing in the video.
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
My dad is a rocket scientist for NASA. I wear this shirt and I might be kicked out of the family. I will wear it anyway. Received my vote.

The flag didn't move at all once the telescoping bar from which it was suspended had been extended. The fan in the shirt is the one point keeping me from voting for it.
pwhitwor wrote:The flag didn't move at all once the telescoping bar from which it was suspended had been extended. The fan in the shirt is the one point keeping me from voting for it.
That is exactly true. I'm not supporting the myth here by any means- the hoax idea was silly, but I think the idea behind this design is sound (what it would look like if it were true. The original commented that a fan must have moved the flag, which is why it is in the design.
THis shirt is teh AWESOME!! but your all sheep if u beleive its true. the hollywood studio story about the MOON is a HOAX!!! it was actualy really filmed on teh moon but the goverment WANTS you to beleive it was just filmed in a STUDIO. the government OWNS the media and if you dont beleive that just look at our GAS PRICES. SkekTek ur the man but be careful cause once the people who really run this counrty see ur shirt, theyll hack ur computer to burn down ur house.

Haxrox, you are a riot...

Gets my vote just because you're an "old" fart like me! Very depressing to see all the 80s stuff!
AlexIAm wrote:Gets my vote just because you're an "old" fart like me! Very depressing to see all the 80s stuff!
Thanks. If you like the design, try to get the word out, since it looks like with Zelda and the Genome charging up the charts, it's gonna be a battle between Thriller and me for third or fourth (or fifth when Cho gets an entry in)... and it doesn't look good with me out of the hotness...
The hoax theory I remember is that it was filmed in the desert and that desert wind was what caused the flag to blow. Therefore, no fan was needed. I hadn't heard about a Hollywood one. Seems odd that they would deliberately supply wind when there was none. o_O
GMV! I may have to buy two shirts this week if this and Zelda win.
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
I wonder if old people would throw rocks at me if I wear this on Long Island?
At the time it seemed everyone, including my dad, was working in aerospace.
It really doesn't take much to get 80 something year old men mad.

Uh-oh...add me to the 1969 group as well. Love this one ShekTek! Great idea. I thought about this too, but I'm so glad that I didn't even try...your design is perfect!
I did the Woodstock/Hippie take on 1969 since I was born at the very end of the Summer of '69.
Good luck. Glad to see this one in the fog!
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
great shirt idea.
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
Nice shirt, Skek. Good luck!
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
Thanks for the support, folks! There are a lot of good designs, so I'm honored to be in the fog at the moment.
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
So are you mocking the conspiracy theory or do you actually believe we faked the moon landing? I of course prefer to think we landed on the moon, so I don't think I'd wear this shirt.
underblueskies wrote:So are you mocking the conspiracy theory or do you actually believe we faked the moon landing? I of course prefer to think we landed on the moon, so I don't think I'd wear this shirt.
Mocking.... we did land on the moon obviously (hundreds of pounds of rocks don't lie). But I thought, yes, I could do a moon landing shirt (I did). But it would be a BETTER idea to design something around the hoax theory... and there it is.
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
i like the concept but not the execution here. it all looks misshapen to me. not my style.
good luck, though!
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
nice... no wind in space...l o l
I don't know about this, when I get dressed every morning I think to my self "Can I wear this shirt and meet Buzz Aldrin? " And I'm afraid that the answer for this one is no ;)
Wouldn't want this to happen...

Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
This makes me laugh when I see it!! In a good way! Great job!
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
I think the landing was real, but the pictures were faked to make NASA look good. Without atmosphere on the moon the sun would be much too blinding to take some of the amazing photos that were taken. Especially since the cameras were on their chests and aiming was nearly impossible it seems ridiculous to believe that when you see the collaborations of all the pictures that they were all perfectly composed, framed, and without any conceivable error. Everything just simply looks way to good. Also the shadows in the pictures aren't parallel indicating a nearby light (not the sun) even though they did not bring any lighting with them to the moon.

I think all of those concerns have been addressed already... try the wikipedia article, even.
Regarding the "perfect pictures," I'm just pulling this out of thin air (because I'm too lazy to read the article again, having read it maybe a year ago and forgotten most of it), but they could have taken real photos and cleaned them up. Or they could have taken thousands of photos repeatedly and automatically and then only presented the best ones to the public.

Ahh, I lied. Link is here. I'll pull out the relevant quotations:
3. The quality of the photographs is implausibly high.
There are many, many poor quality photographs taken by the Apollo astronauts. NASA chose to publish only the best examples.
5. The color and angle of shadows and light are inconsistent.
Shadows on the Moon are complicated by uneven ground, wide angle lens distortion, light reflected from the Earth, and lunar dust. Shadows also display the properties of vanishing point perspective leading them to converge to a point on the horizon.

Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
Aw, cmon folks! Can we make this old guy proud and get this back in the fog? I was so close all week, and now I'm getting my pants kicked by a bunch of '80s designs! Arrrggghh!!!
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
back in the fog, back in the fog! I want a fake moon man!
(ok, I want the buckyballs shirt too, but I have been wanting this one for a longer period of time)

Ya know, I must say that the fact that we're debating this hoax makes me feel good. Just imagine what people in the astrophysics field went through back in the day...
I think this shirt would be far less popular if I had done the easy task of making a moon landing shirt instead of basing it on the "hoax" idea.

I love your particular execution of it.
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
A big thank you to everyone who voted for this... although it didn't make it to the top 3, it did make me feel extremely proud that you supported a shirt from the '60's. Thanks! I'll get it printed on spreadshirt in 60 days for those of you still interested.
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
Sorry it missed the top 3 skek! It's a great design.

It's a place where ex-derby designs can be sold by the artists, after the 60 days. Click on the Amakihi below and that's my site for selling old woot designs. I'm less than two weeks away from offering the Sponge Attack from the water derby.
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
It's definitely a great design, and a shame it never made it as a shirt.
CuterThanYou wrote:It's definitely a great design, and a shame it never made it as a shirt.
Im in for one if you resubmit or post a link to the sale
So if you don't make it in the top 3, you not only don't get your shirt printed but you also have to wait 60 days to print it elsewhere? FTW? That's ridiculous.
With all the non-derby hot mess that gets printed, you'd think they'd at least let us vote on what gets printed outside of derbies. That way, something like this shirt would get printed over some gar-bahj like that eagle with the crossed-out eyes.
Love the design and waited up every night this weekend for it,
. I would like to buy it from you after the 60 days, but the chances of me remembering two months from now is pretty low ... =) ... Anyway you could scan through this thread when its available and send those of us that have mentioned interest a message?
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
Love the design. If you ever get this printed up, let us know...I'm in for 1.
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
I'd love to buy this shirt
I'd be in for a few if/when it gets printed. ![]()
Re: 1969- Great Moon Hoax
Update: Woot will soon have a Best Of derby (I am predicting in a week or two). Hopefully this will get tabbed and be on the list. If so, vote then too. If not, I will wait the obligatory waiting period and sell it myself (maybe do a few slight tweaks to fix nagging problems too)
Thanks to everyone who liked and voted for this! I am very proud of the design.

So far, no best of... and the next derby is based on Revolution, so I guess we'll have to wait two more weeks to see if this gets tabbed for re-entry...
