Now that you mention it, I could see how it could be read that way. But I had no intension of making it suggestive. I was thinking of Dr. Strangelove and I've been practicing on women faces a lot lately. I hope people dont see me as a pervert.

It's funny, first thing I thought of when I saw this was your pin-up on a rocket... totally different style here, but both solid designs

Very awesome, dynamic design, strong colors, well rendered. It is, however, sexual as all let out. We will see if the mods call this one "over pg13"

I wonder why red was passed up? orange might blend it well with the other colors but red would have rang the bell, so to speak.
Re: Rocket Rodeo
Wow, great work! I agree with Jimiyo, this is true t-shirt art, and a very exciting and energetic design, but I feel a bit of dread for you because of Woot's well-known habit of wanting stuff that's pretty much nonsexual in nature. This is quite suggestive - you could rework it with a less sexy rider - maybe a cartoon character - a male figure similar to the cowboy from "Toy Story" perhaps? - instead of a very pretty and well-built girl.
I'm just sayin'.
Handy guideline: just consider Woot to be the Amish country of t-shirt design, and you can't go wrong, hehehe.

Im very pleased with how this came out. I spent A LOT more time on this one than my other subs, but Im bummed that everyone reads it sexually. I had no intention of doing anything remotely sexual. I think in this case its kind of what people bring to it. I see her as almost having a disney princess look, and I dont jump to the rocket having any meaning. I know from two years of art history that anything longer than it is wide can be and usually is considered phallic, but i just dont see stuff that way and I dont understand it. meanwhile woot hasnt given me the hammer yet on this, and maybe if they read these comments they will see I meant nothing by it. I hope people can look past the unintentional sexual side of this and see in it the hard work and strong line work. thanks for the comment

i don't care for sexualy sugestive shirts, on that note i would like to say i like this shirt
TAYLORT5 wrote:I wonder why red was passed up? orange might blend it well with the other colors but red would have rang the bell, so to speak.
Red has a tendancy to seperate from other colors due to its intensity. Orange was a wise choice in my opinion.
Re: Rocket Rodeo
it doesn't appear too sexually suggestive. plus the alice shirt didn't get rejected and it could be argued that shirt was much more sexually suggestive than this one.

It is very easy to see the Dr. Strangelove is the inspiration for this one - great job on the art work! It is NOT overtly sexual in my opinion, but it is visually appealing. Now if the "cowgirl" were wearing something more revealing...

Looks like Woot considers the Disney-like appeal to be stronger than any sexual connotations. Congratulations! I'm glad they didn't do their Amish thing, hehehe. Good for you, and good luck.

Actually, you're losing to a lot of shirts. It's currently in 14th place; there are plenty of other shirts above it. If I were you I'd be more upset about the ones that won't print properly and will ultimately bomb if they go up for sale.

I had to Google "Dr. Strangelove" to see what everyone kept talking about. Maybe I'm the only one who's never seen it.
I really do love the art, but I honestly can't see wearing it. Something about having a cowgirl on a rocket flying out from between my breasts seems....odd.
Re: Rocket Rodeo
If woot does not do anything with this in 60 days, you may want to consider trying to sell this design to the Houston Rodeo. It is a huge event, and they already started planning next year's, which will be in the Feb-Mar timeframe. Since Houston calls itself the Space City, I think you will find a lot of interest.

yes Im losing to a lot, thank you, but thats not what bothers me. It's losing to someone's recycled design that hadnt won its first posting thats a little annoying.
Sachmoe64 wrote:hey thanks a lot. Ive never heard of that. Thats a great idea. I think I might try that.
Do NOT tell them you never heard of the rodeo!!! It's like telling people in Hollywood you never watch TV or movies.
Sachmoe64 wrote:yes Im losing to a lot, thank you, but thats not what bothers me. It's losing to someone's recycled design that hadnt won its first posting thats a little annoying.
You should still be more annoyed with the ones that won't print properly. Then nobody's happy.
Re: Rocket Rodeo
Easily my favorite shirt in the derby.
superspryte wrote:You should still be more annoyed with the ones that won't print properly. Then nobody's happy.
woot is not about design logistics. It's about making $1000. Designers care more about their shirt printing than good shirts printing.
It's not to say sach's shirt art isn't done well, but it is to say that his motivation is in his own interest. The naive designer believes a shirt which will print poorly will eventually succumb to better work, but woot has proven not days ago to not really care about such things.
Any art scene is strengthened by artists getting together, sharing ideas and inspiration, and running in the same circles... doesn't mean you have to like everyone, but it does mean if you only look out for #1, your presence is more likely to be seen as a detriment. One of the reasons some things (terrible printings, clip art, simpleton concepts, resubmits, unseemly meme usage, etc) continue at woot is because so many of the designers aren't concerned with furthering design, or furthering their own art, or furthering the world of T-shirt printing, but solely concerned with a cool thousand. If we saw more of an artistic community develop, we'd very likely see an improvement in overall quality. We'd see other people who feel strongly about design, amateur or pro, finally decide to join. We'd see their friends sign up and give votes to more good prints, to even out the general bias the carp seems to have. Etc, Etc. It's a matter of what you want out of this. If you only want the $1000, welcome to the monkey house, this is what we'll keep getting.
love the design. but it's more for the men than for the ladies. can't really see many females wearing the shirt.
Re: Rocket Rodeo
She's 'da bomb'
I agree a great deal with what AdderXYU is saying! There inst much motivation for a serious graphic designer to enter. However, Sach's work is so good and better than what i've seen on woot in a while- and I dont think its fair to say he is a "naive designer" simply because he is annoyed with the situation. If anything, his annoyance is exactly what Adder is talking about- the discouraging of design and designers going to the next level as a community when rehashed idea and popularity seem to win the derby. Thus, a new designer (not playing to the crowd) will anly receive mediocre feedback for their art at best- total rejection at worst. Besides, woot is a contest for money- ANY self motivation is simply a response to that.
Re: Rocket Rodeo
The female figure works well in this. The body and the long hair works to convert the movement well. The facial expression works with this image very well. i really would rather have this shirt out of all the other in this derby. it is a bit suggestive but just enough to make i more interesting its not too much and overt about.
hope you win and to see more of your work

Uh, you can dude- TGentry is the second most printed guy at this site (and rightly so!). One of his shirts, Watch It Grow, is still available for purchase.
DSladek is good too, but I think I've only seen a couple of shirts by him. As he submits more work (both in the derby and in daily form) I think he'll get some nice prints as well.

I'll never understand how some of the T's get more votes than this one. Physical proof life isn't fair.

*giggles*, man aint that the truth. This one is just too awesome to not print. I went and took back my votes for ones that are higher up than this one. I'm happy to see it moving up in rank, but am just preparing for disappointment and telling myself that I don't need to spend 10 bucks this weekend anyway.
I do hope it gets higher though, good luck.

"The Crowd" buys the shirts here, incase anyone was wondering. Not being mean. but the shirts that are chosen USUALLY sell out.

Afraid not. It didn't win the derby and thus it was not sold and is not being sold. You can cross your fingers and hope that woot decides to print it anyway, which they can if they want to, but I'm told that this has never happened before with derby entries. Since it's been given an honourable mention by woot, it's extremely likely that you'll see it again in a do-over derby (which many speculate will be happening soon) so you can vote for it then and hope it rockets to the top at that time. =)
