Version 2? I know something like this was in the Water derby, but I wasn't around then. Can anyone point out the differences that make this a v.2?
Very cool, by the way.
Re: Treacherous Waters v.2
Love the newer color James. Amazing! 25 votes in 20 minutes. Man! You have some serious voting prowess! It's funny that your wave is right behind my sailboat entry.....makes it looks like it's standing still and about to be sunk.
Good luck with this entry. I much prefer it to the tipping mammoth. But that's just personal preference.
I voted for this one for the water derby and will vote for it again. Let's hope it wins this time.

I'm not sure I could pull off wearing the mammoth shirt, but I'd wear this a lot. I love water/ocean/beach themes, and the blues are just gorgeous.
It is funny seeing this next to klswoot's sailboat! her boat must've escaped the wave somehow. definitely gmv on this, and I hope it prints. (too much brown in the fog right now!)

Have to agree here about the brown in the fog. I won't be buying anymore asphalt or brown shirts for awhile. I have way too many. When I saw the asphalt ban this derby, I was sooooo hoping that it meant a shirt with a brighter color would fog. But, 3 of the 4 are brown. All great designs, but just can't justify adding this color....especially for Spring and Summer. But, there are new wooters everyday, so I'm sure they will all sell well....just not for me.
As for the sailboat next to the colossal wave...doesn't it look like it's sucking the wind out of my sails. Laughed outloud when I saw them side-by-side in the entries.

Looks awesome on the royal instead of the baby blue. Very cool.

Love the contrast on the royal blue vs. the baby blue. Definitely a bolder shirt this time around.
I didn't vote for this in the water derby, and i bought the koi and lady in the water. i feel like this shirt deserves to win this derby, because it is a great shirt, and alot of the woot art has been going downhill. also the new color makes it alot better. good choice.
Re: Treacherous Waters v.2
Awesome. I can't wait to buy this. Wanted it in the water derby but will settle for this one! Thanks for resubbing it although I was fine with the light blue, too.
sweet im glad you put this design into another derby i was hoping to buy it last time but it came in 4th hope it wins this time around.

I'm planning on buying this, so it had better win. The logistics of buying it if it doesn't win are too complicated.

Neat stuff!
This reminds me of the poor fisherman running from Godzilla. The one that goes fishing at the docks while it's raining, and his buddies just watch as he runs from the exploding pier and godzilla in the water....hehe.

Gorgeous line work. Doesn't need the fisherman or the dock, IMO, he's actually a little distracting.

Here's the link to the older shirt. The big difference I see is the contrast between the waves and the shirt color has increased. Part of this is because this shirt is a darker blue, and partly because the lines are whiter. It really is new and improved in my opinion.

suzyottomatic wrote:I'd really like to frame this. Does Woot print larger on a 2x or is the print size the same regardless off the tee size?
The women's sizes and men's small are one screen size, and the rest of the men's a different size. If you're thinking of cutting it up and framing it, I would reccomend getting the largest size possible so you can have the most extra space to adjust centering the print. Personally, I find the men's xl to be a very good size to make a pillowcase from--my mother, genius of the internet, ordered herself a men's xl of Full of Ink instead of the wxl she was after, so we have an extra one that is pinned and ready to become my very own t-shirt custom pillowcase of awesomeness.
James, I can't say how happy I am to see this fogged. It's the first woot shirt in a while I've wanted to buy, and the quality is gorgeous as always.

This shirt IS very good. I think that's why it's doing well.
You are probably much younger than me, but your coments about someone else having an unfair advantage sound very familiar to me. Do you think Einstein had it easy as a Jew in Germany? Do you think Barbara Jordan had it easy as a black woman in the south in a career dominated by very well connected white men? And do you think that Lech Walesa had an easy time asking for changes for working people in communist Poland? Well, none of them did. They all faced incredible barriers but kept on, not because they thought they were better, but because they loved their work.
If you love designing, it won't matter in the long run what your challenges are. You will just want to design. And things will either click here or wherever you are meant to design.
awesome design, very japanese wood block printed style.

I'm 25, so I'm not quite sure how much younger I am than you, but Cho's shirts have an advantage because they're Cho shirts.
If anyone else submitted the Cow Tipping shirt, it wouldn't be fogged right now, but he submits it and it's fogged within a few hours. His talent aside, he has an unfair advantage, end of story.

Others have argued that this is not the case, so I won't repeat them.
But if it is, then it is something you will just have to deal with. No sense complaining about it, because people are tired of those comments. Just keep working at your designs and eventually you will find something that works for you and the voters.
And everyone will be bitching about your designs instead.

you got the Lady Out Of Water, and didn't "must have this" Cho shirt then, why the sudden change? They're not right next to each other on the computer screen, so you can't compare as closely? You should've voted then and wanted to buy both then... yes, Cho is awesome. I like lots of his work too, so I am not slamming his designs, but resubbing with only colors changed did not seem like Cho standards. Maybe I'm overlooking times that similar has happened in the past, but I honestly find this frustrating.

True
He also entered a cool dove design that week, and both the dog and the dove failed to reach the top ten (or even reach 100 votes, for that matter). Also, it's interesting that people are complaining about how he always wins, when... this is a resub. Obviously he doesn't win every time or a resub wouldn't be possible.
The only advantages Cho has are talent and the ability to enter several high quality entries every week. I think the main thing setting Cho apart from other entrants is that when his submissions don't do well, instead of blaming the voters he goes back to the drawing board to find out what he could do better next time. That kind of thinking is why he has a better grasp of who the voting audience is than anyone else competing, but it's not magic- anyone could do it, if they applied themselves to the task with the same level of dedication.
Re: Treacherous Waters v.2
This was my favorite all-time woot shirt. I was pretty disappointed when it didn't win the water derby. I've got my fingers crossed that you win this one.
KenSPT wrote:It's a beautiful shirt, no doubt, but Cho's monopoly of the Derbies has gotten a little ludicrous ...
His artwork deserves to win. No doubt about it. He knows the Woot voting crowd and does amazing designs. Should he win, yes. I don't know if it hurts morale to see the the same artist win time and time again. But, the derby might result in more varied designs each week if they set rules on the number of consecutive wins for a designer or allowed for more frequent editor's picks.
I'm not a Cho hater, so don't take my post as such. I love his dedication and attention to detail. He rarely ever submits an entry that is flawed. His entries deserve the praise they receive and he certainly deserves to be printed. But, I feel bad for other entries that are just outside the fog and are fantastic too and are from artists who have never been printed, or who don't benefit from the advanced exposure that comes with Cho's resub or Cho's amazing woot reputation. I'm a Libra....I'll blame my feeling of trying to balance out everyone's happiness on being a Libra.
klswoot wrote:His artwork deserves to win. No doubt about it. He knows the Woot voting crowd and does amazing designs. Should he win, yes. I dunno, this artist doesn't mind seeing multiple wins- I think artists like Cho, Gentry, Fablefire and Sokowa (among many others, of course) do amazing work, and I love wearing their shirts. The only thing that hurts my morale, personally, is when terrible designs or concepts beat me. Being beaten by great work energizes me, because it helps me see what is possible in the medium. I don't like the idea of Woot creating any new rules that could limit the quality of entries we have to choose from when we vote, and that's how I feel a rule change would affect the derby for me.
(ps- I'm a libra too!)

I agree GF. I really don't mind losing to great entries from great designers, including Cho, Fable, Sokowa, Zenne, Jimiyo etc.. Good shirts winning is good for everyone. You can't blame Cho for being the best. He's just doing what any of us would if we were in his position.
It stings a bit when I see a shirt I don't really like win over one of my entries that I really put some love into, but everyone feels that way. I've tried to keep the mindset that I'm just not trying hard enough and I'll have to do better next time. Also remembering that I used to get almost no votes makes me appreciate at least being close a lot now.

Go Libras!! I agree with you almost entirely. When the really great designs win, it certainly forces the other artists to feel they need to raise the game in order to vie for one of the other fogged spots. This benefits everyone because it makes all the artists work harder and gives the woot buying crowd some fabulous designs for an affordable price.
But, I'm still trying to see the derby through the eyes of a new designer and whether they feel that they are competing on a level playing field. I know the raise to $1000.00 is incentive enough for the new designers to stay and test their success in the derby in the short run, but I don't know if it is enough to keep them here week after week if their art isn't getting the notice they feel they deserve. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
But, I do agree with you about the concept based shirts. That's a definite morale-buster. My dad bought two sliced bread shirts remember! (That one beat my Taking Flight design!) He still says it the best shirt woot's ever done.
Although your little portal shirt is still kicking butt and it was a relatively simple parody shirt that is amazingly popular! (So you can't hate them too much!
)
I do love that Woot has been calling for text-free shirts a lot more in the derbies. That's nice to see! I also like the restrictions on colors. I'd like to see more variety in the shirt colors that win. (Your orange one is the only really bright shirt to win a derby, isn't it?)

Believe me, I don't hate all concept-based shirts, I even own a bunch
I only hate the terrible ones, which for me usually means either truly horrendous execution, or a concept that the designer borrowed from another, better-looking shirt. I guess I might have stated that a bit funny, as I rarely proofread my posts llo.
Part of the fun, and the frustration, of the derby is that sometimes great art wins... and other times it's a hideous orange shirt with a joke about a video game ;) I find being beaten by great art a lot easier to take, which is probably why I rather prefer losing to the likes of Gentry, Cho and co.
In terms of winners, I look at the Derby similarly to how I look at sites like DBH, Threadless and Uneetee: all of those sites have individual artists who have won many, many times. And all of them have other artists who do good work but haven't won yet. This doesn't seem to hurt any of those sites in terms of new participants. Another thing that keeps me from being upset is knowing that Woot has in the past contacted promising derby artists about doing daily submissions.
But I definitely agree with you on the derbies with art restrictions- I think that's a great way for Woot to induce some variation into what wins the derby, so even if sometimes it's the same people, there's still some new, fresh takes on t-shirt art ![]()

jimfrog67 wrote:Just curious: what is the rule on resubmitting shirts from past derbies? Can anyone resubmit as long as their shirt wasn't printed and it fits the current theme? Or must there be a certain amount of change to the design?
You do have to make some modifications, but I do not know how much, or even if there is an amount specified. I do know that only changing the shirt color is enough to qualify. You can see that on this derby, where people have submitted a design more than once, but on different shirt colors.
In the case of Cho's wave shirt, he changed the shirt color and he changed the ink colors to make the design show up better on this color, and to emphasize the wave edges better. At least.

I like that blue on blue is quiet and confident.
The other shirts in the fog are a little gauche and obvious.
I imagine the people who would wear them. People who wear "funny" shirts tend to need a little too much attention and affirmation.
If this wins, I will buy it, and it will be my first woot shirt.
I hope it wins.

I think this is an improvement over the version in the water derby. The royal is just so lovely, and a wonderful colour in person. This version has much more depth. If by some freak chance it doesn't place this time, I hope it gets an editor's pick in this version.

Re: Treacherous Waters v.2
This is the kind of shirt I watch for on this site, since I'm in the post-40-year-old group. I don't care for zombies, I'm not a huge fan of most video game-based designs, and I don't wear shirts with cartoons, skulls, human-like animals, sight gags, dark, morose colors, or vampires driving racecars, except as sleep shirts if I get one in a random shirt sale.
This is artful, well-drawn, beautiful, and suitable for wearing outside the house. It's fine for a casual Friday at work or the company picnic or for doing errands on a Saturday. I bought Koi Fish because it's fine art and I'm proud to wear it, and it gets many compliments. If this one makes the top 3, I'll be adding a second one to my collection of top faves. Good job.

Me too! Libras rule!
Re: Treacherous Waters v.2
This won't be worn by 4th graders, can be worn any time of the year, and doesn't rely on a greeting card quality joke for its appeal. This is well worth $10 and the kind of thing this site should be selling more of. Go buy your 8 year old's clothes at Target.
Great work, Cho!

Agreed. I really like the shirts with creative graphic placement and "mature" images. Can't waito to buy this one.
Isn't this still baby blue? That picture is supposed to be Royal?

No guarantees, but if it isn't for sale tonight, it should be for sale tomorrow or the next night.
