Re: Army in my Pocket Version 2

Hey everyone, I read your comments about how the pocket and other features of my design would not show up on a brown shirt, so I resubmitted my design with different colors.

Please vote for this one so it can catch up to my first version, once it does I'll remove my first version from the competition.

I hope you enjoy Army In My Pocket Version 2!

This one will work so much better as a shirt. Everyone who voted for the other one PLEASE vote for this one instead, otherwise you'll all be getting shirts that don't print well.

The green version is better because the black lines won't print well on the brown. A lot of people are going to be very disappointed with their shirts if the brown one prints.

I'm glad you changed the color, too. I hope it makes it to the fog because others were right about the colors probably not showing up. After getting my Nevermore shirt and was p issed that it was hard to make out, it looks like a big funky stain on the shirt. This one GMV definitely, my son is totally lovin' this shirt. Good luck!

Re: Army in my Pocket Version 2

If both versions of this end up in the fog and both end up as a top three design, will Woot print both of them? That would seem... not right to have a Derby with two exact same designs, just on two different colors.

The notes I've seen from Spryte say that since the design is more than 24 hours old, click on the Tattle button and explain what you want done. This apparently has been done in the past, with little to no repercussions. You could also PM joelterrific as insurance.

Re: Army in my Pocket Version 2

not to be judgemental, just curious... is the pocket on the printed version a realistic size to look like a real pocket? I guess some pockets on polos now days are smaller than in the past, but it just looks kind of small on the shirt template image :-/

Hmm, just went in for 3 Randoms, when I haven't bought any shirts lately (although still checking frequently) so what are the chances of liking them!?! Oh well, couldn't pass up the mystery!

Then resubmit your own art. Somebody did that with their wave art from an earlier derby after making minor changes. It's in the fog too, for some reason. I thought derbies were about originality based on a theme not reruns. However, if that one is okay to submit again, then yours is too.

I don't think these paratroopers are anything like your skydiving stick men, so this one definitely GMV.

It's a shame this will probably get printed. It's poorly drawn and makes an ugly shirt. It looks like it was done with a mouse in MSPaint. The parachuting guys are just mirrored images of each other - very lazy. Some of it is shaded and some of it not shaded. The pocket looks fake and too small. The characters should be casting shadows on the shirt for full effect. It's not even an original idea, someone else already did it in another derby. This is what's wrong with the derby.

lmfao. while his comments aren't exactly tactful, gorgon's CONSTRUCTIVE criticisms are all spot on. It's a lazy illustration, the parachuters are mirror of the same art, there is zero depth or realism, and the pocket is off. so his assessment is perfectly valid. These two responses, however, are typical meaningless retorts to criticisms - for the millionth time, one need not be a designer to critique design, and this isn't the "saysomethingniceaboutthisshirtwoot.com" Acknowledging the weaknesses of a fogged entry is 100% valid - even if it's a shirt you like. This design is poorly done, but again wooters vote for a funny idea over good execution of that idea. happens every week.

and the growing habit of people creating new accts to respond to people directly has to stop. woot needs to start banning people who are doing this. Be a man and post under your regular account.

I seemed to recall this derby being judged by fellow woot members, not by professional judges. See that vote button that says, "I'D WANT ONE"? 9_9 This is something you would wear, not something you'd put in a museum or art gallery. Besides, artists can do whatever they want; there's no "right" or "wrong" to art. You can criticize all you want, but if the majority of woot members like the design, then so be it. As they say: "C'est la vie."

i agree. but where on that page does it say "DO NOT CRITICIZE"? I'm no more interested in fine art on a shirt than you are...that doesn't mean i don't hope for some measure of quality. there's a pretty broad spectrum you are ignoring in between there.

This HAS to get printed. I HAVE to own this shirt (so I can send it to my brother in the Army). I don't care how technically perfect it is, it's dang funny (and way better than the one someone hinted at from an earlier derby).

I liked the brown one better, but this will have to do. This CANNOT lose to that buttery croissant swinging ball shirt. I would be soooooooo sad if it did!

Once more, I'm with brizz.

A good idea is a good idea. Voters say this is a good idea, and that's fine by me. I think it's nice as well, though I won't be buying it. But I hate that people are hating people just because they give criticism.

That guy up there (I forget his username) was probably more rude than he needed to be, but he was simply stating that he didn't like the shirt. Even better, he wasn't simply being negative - he gave reasons. He gave constructive criticism (rather bluntly, but whatever). He suggested that the shirt would be better had the two parachutists been different and if there had been some shadows. That's perfectly legitimate criticism - he wasn't just saying "this shirt is ugly!" - he was critiquing.

That is the whole point of these discussion boards. I despise those bashing comments just like the rest of you, but honest opinion with good reasons should be encouraged, not labelled as mean-spirited and dismissed.

This shirt is good. Can it be better? Probably. Must everyone like it? Heck no. And those who don't like it are entitled to say so - and if they give reasons for their negativity, all the better.

As I said before, constructive critcism is fine, honest and with good reason, I agree. But using words like "ugly" and "lazy" is just plain insulting. Constructive criticism is acceptable, and I say again, insults cross the line.

I think it makes perfect sense that all the guys look alike and that the parachuters are mirrored. I thought it worked because I always thought of them as the little green army men (which was why I liked the brown better), which are essentially identical.

There's a difference between constructive criticism and insults. Sometimes it's a fine line, but we can always be more kind...

mahowes

quality posts: 0 Private Messages mahowes

I love the little men, but the pocket just looks really, really bad in my opinion and brings down the overall quality of the shirt. The lines need to be straighter for the creases, and if a guy is pulling down the pocket it needs to show. As a previous poster said there should be shadows at least behind the guys jumping out of the pocket to give the shirt some depth and make it look like there are *actually* guys standing on your shirt.

I like the design, but I wish people would stop voting for the "cute" entries and start voting for stuff that looks more polished. One of the reasons I find myself voting for Cho's work is generally because he takes the time to make sure every little detail is exactly how he wants it. Now I'm not saying that everyone's work has to look the same, but I think that this shirt could have benefited from a little more TLC.

Anyways, grats either way to the artist it looks like this one is guaranteed top 3.
