That's because nobody has three giant bear fingers that can't fit more than one at a time in a mug handle.

Re: Mama Bear

Thanks Cho and Bluchez. I figured there would be blowback since it's a resub (albeit a pretty heavily modified resub). I've been busting my hump doing original entries for weeks now and don't feel a bit guilty about redoing this one. I look forward to doing another fresh design this afternoon, but for now this will have to do and I'm completely cool with that.

This is a legit resubmit and it goes well with the theme, but the bear is bit too masculine right now. Maybe if it had a full set of curlers rather than one...

I didn't know tgent and jcho were video games! =D What console? I have all except PS3.. so that shouldn't be a problem. When were they released? If they're out of print, I'd have to get them online as our vintage game store went out of business. If you suggest EB, I could hit that up too.

I need a new game to play.. Harvest Moon Cute is getting a tad bit old.

I really like that you actually made some really nice changes rather than just slap "mom" on the mug. I love the curler in the hair. Is it just me or does this have more detail in the linework than the original?

Yeah, one of the things I didn't like about the original was the lack of detail. I think it really helps flesh it out. I tried to keep it a little rough because having it too clean and polished wouldn't really fit the grumpy look on the bear.

Re: Mama Bear

I see absolutely nothing wrong with this resub. It is a great idea and it is definitely different than the original, and I really hope this makes it into the top 3 this time. I truly don't understand what people have against resubmitting designs. If they were unpopular, then they wouldn't go anywhere and would stay at the bottom... not harming anyone. The fact that a resub makes it into the fog means people appreciate the design. It isn't like having it in another derby would sway people to vote for it more than shirts that hadn't been seen before. I wish you the best of luck, and look forward to buying this.

Re: Mama Bear

tgent, you know I'm a fan, but this just isn't for me. My issue with this is not the resubmission (though my god, that whole trend can stop any time now and I'll be ecstatic) but that I simply don't think this works as well as a woman bear. The other bear was wearable by anyone because, while it was clearly male, there was nothing that assigned a gender solidly. The "mom" mug kills the entire design for me. I'm a huge proponent of designs not needing to be "masculine" or "feminine", but throw "mom" on a shirt and you've scythed your audience. That, and I think the light blue popped way more off the shirt.

The curler, admittedly, is a nice touch.

As long as there are noticeable changes and it matches the theme, there is no problem with a resub. And sometimes the changes take as long as the original. Just depends.

You obviously have never slept with curlers on. Many women sleep with only one for their bangs, or one on each side, or some variation thereof. I can't sleep with a full set of rollers, and I would need something stronger than coffee to help me in the morning.

I don't check derbies that often these days, school keeps me busy, but even I have seen this one before. Not saying it doesn't happen at least once every derby. Just kind of annoying to jump on, looking for original ideas to steal, and finding the same warmed over ideas. Dang you all.

But... it's in the fog, which probably means, contrary to what you seem to be so concerned about, that he didn't lose too many votes because of its being a resub. The shirt is getting enough votes that it's staying up there very well, so it appears that not too much scything of any sort is going on, virtual or literal.

You're talking about what COULD have happened, or MIGHT have happened, but I'm talking about what IS. The truth of the matter is that it's doing very well as a resub and that's okay, really it is. No worries!

I'm not saying it should be realistic. I mean, really, do bears wear curlers? :P
I just think giving it more curlers would clear up the gender neutrality thing going on here. It's okay from close up, but from far away, it still looks like a dude.

I like the single curler, myself--it's a great touch. Maybe it would clear up the confusion if the curler were one of those MASSIVE pink ones like you'd wear if trying to get all of your bangs into one single fat curlover.

The details are great--at first when I saw the thumbnail I thought, "great, another resub" but when I looked at the full image, the added details really made it. I didn't vote for this the last time around, but it GMV this time--although I wish the shirt color was lighter (ME??!! What am I saying!) or the bear's robe was a lighter purple--it doesn't really stand out on this color...

I have no personal squabble with either gentry or cho, but I'm so sick of seeing the same designs getting resubmitted all the time. It's almost as if every time w00t comes up with some buttery croissant-ass theme, all the "good" designers resubmit something that lost because they know it'll be the best of the rest. Pretty weak. You two have great design skills, but now it's beginning to look like you have very little originality. Too bad I can't draw, because even *I* have had original ideas with each Derby.

If the artists on this site tried to obey the dictates of the self-appointed Committee of Critics that have taken up residence on this site, the artists would all be standing in line at attention each week, presenting their ideas on paper (of a certain size only, mind you!) in hopes of being approved. Of course, the Committee of Critics can't agree on anything amongst themselves, so nothing ever gets approved. No designs make it past their surly critique, and no t-shirt ever gets printed, and all the Woot shirt fans go without.

Isn't the way we do it now so much better? Freedom of expression, people. Freedom of choice. Woot's rules are sufficient for their purposes, and they have shown that they are flexible in listening to the demands of the Committee, but in the meanwhile, how about curbing the criticism for a while, and kicking back, and enjoying what the artists have to offer each week?

(Maybe Valium would help the Committee members. They seem to have their knickers in a big ol' twist most if not all of the time! )

Re: Mama Bear

Wow, I am really surprised at all the whinging in this thread! So what if it's a re-sub? It hasn't won in the past and no one is forcing you to vote for it if you don't like it.... so what's the big deal? How is it less original just because you've seen it once before? If the shoe fits...

Re-reading a good book doesn't make it less original. Neither should a re-submitted design be discounted just because you've already registered it in your brain cells once before. And for those griping about how the changes are 'scything' the potential buyers... isn't that what the voting system is in place to judge? not you. Let the system do the work of deciding what is sellable and what isn't instead of shooting down a design before all the votes are in. I think this shirt is great and would love to buy it for my mother.
