Hooray! Fine art instead of cartoons! I love graphic/abstract designs, this would look fabulous as a 2'x3' poster in a simple black frame. If I can't have that, I would proudly wear this on a tshirt.
btw, I love how you avoided using gradients.

Very nice work. I would really appreciate it if you could tell me a little about your method for creating this? Did you draw and color each line individually? Or do you have a more efficient method? What application did you use? Did you use a mouse or a tablet?
Very nice effect. GMV.

Heh, I do have my fingers crossed for the fog, and it's moving in the right direction. Vote for the cubist bird shirt -- pass it on.
I just pm'd you with info a few minutes ago. (Check for messages upper left on any forum page.) It got long for this thread. [edit: Sorry Adder -- it was long, and no one seemed to care.] I'll send the notes to anyone that wants them -- if there are more than a couple, I'll post it in another thread. Bottom line -- experiment. Good luck!

Better to keep it here and be ignored than have people looking for it. I think it was an interesting read, and might make people appreciate the art more if it's up for all to see.

About "this shirt"....
I posted this (responding to donr0217) before, but all the great comments about the actual design that’s up for voting stopped, and I missed them.
It was also a big-old post that seemed out of place here. Of course now, there’s the question about “where did the post go”.... And my plan was to stay away from the forums this week. Can’t win. Oh -- but maybe the shirt can -- don’t forget to vote! ;)
If you find this interesting or helpful, or have questions, please just leave a new comment rather than replying to this whole thing. Thanks....
---
This design started as a pencil sketch of the framework, about 8x10, which I scanned in and drew over in Corel Draw (a vector drawing program) so I could be precise with all the parallel lines.
The red lines (going all the way to the edges) were added to allow me to use the magic wand to select the outside areas, which were otherwise unbound. I exported that as an .ai file (still vector based) and opened it in PhotoShop at 16x20, 300dpi, anti-aliased unchecked. (I hadn’t noticed the “anti-aliased” checkbox before. Good to know.)
The rest was about selecting each cell and painting inside them, which I did one at a time. Some cells took a few tries to get the right color combination. The outside cells (where most of the green is, and where I was trying to suggest “tree” or at least leafiness) were painted individually and later en-masse, with the thought of bringing them together a little more.
For the painting itself, I created a “brush” from another shape I made in Corel Draw
and set up some randomization of placement (“Scattering” under “Brushes” in PhotoShop) to keep it from being too “perfect”. I used a tablet to do the painting -- a tablet wasn’t exactly necessary for this design, but it was of course nice to have, and I used the pressure sensitivity to control the size of the lines. (Another brush setting was used to keep the lines from getting too small -- woot won’t guarantee a line under 4-5 pixels at 300 dpi will print.)
That was the method, but there was more experimentation. My first attempt at this design had the paint lines following the angles of the framework, but it was really hard to make out what the picture was supposed to be. I didn’t even keep a copy. It took a little more experimentation before I realized horizontal paint alone was going to work the best.
I hope that proves insightful!

Thanks very much for sharing the info on method/technique. Very interesting. If I follow you correctly, you really did draw most of the horizontal lines one-by-one!?!
In any case, it does give me some new things to play with, though I know more about Illustrator than Photoshop...but far from enough about either.
And congratulations on reaching the fog! GL.

Omgosh, I have been so busy that I haven't had a chance to look at the derby lately, but, I have been hoping somehow this could reach the fog! Just got home and so excited to see it. This is an awesome fog! I am also in love with kdeuce's giant peach which rocks my world. Even just the tree alone is perfection on that shirt. Some of the best art I've seen. I also love sokowa's and beefy's so I will have to hope for a tie because I love them all. Congrats redghia. This piece is truly innovative and stunning. Brilliant.

Ah, I forgot to mention the "Spacing" checkbox under Brushes/Brush Tip Shape. Some of the lines were placed individually, not most. You'll see when you try it.

Forever thanks for the comments and votes. This has turned into something of a dream thread. I’m really happy to see the response on what is essentially art for art’s sake. I figured I was taking a chance here, as I bailed part-way through a more derby-typical design to do this one. Sometimes things just work out! I look forward to seeing what the response is on the buying side if this can grab and hold onto one of the top spots....

RedGhia! YAY for getting an abstract cubist design in the fog. This is gorgeous. Works great on a shirt.....and equally beautiful framed under glass.
Glad you were able to strike a chord with the voters. Hope you don't mind if I link to your design in my sig. I'm rooting for you!
Love the 'painterly feel' of Sokowa's lighthouse too. Currently visiting family on an island, so I'm sure there would be lots of folks around here loving the lighthouse design. I'll try to gather votes for both of you!

Redghia: Really sorry this didn't quite make it. So close. Perhaps shirt.woot! will pick this up for a daily. Or I'm sure you can get it printed elsewhere quite successfully.
Congrats on a great run and thanks for taking things in a very different direction than the norm. It's inspiring and will hopefully motivate others to step outside the typical shirt.woot! box. Unfortunately, I think the next derby theme ("Bugs") is going to drive a lot more cartoonish and alien/robot/monster-meme shirts.

This is criminal, such an arty wonderful shirt not in the fog. The irony is that the designs that win will be one-week wonders, then reckoned into oblivion--whereas this one probably would have lasted for awhile. No justice.
