Wright's Dragonfly

Dragonflies done in a stained glass style reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright. A little modern and bold. Hope you like it. Thank you in advance for your votes!

if it was just the two dragonflies, it'd have my vote immediately. the green thing is putting me off, but chances are i'll vote for it anyway

Re: Wright's Dragonfly

Hi Mordicat! I struggled with deciding whether or not to include the center part of the design. I had the two dragonflies alone, but it didn't really feel like a stained glass design to me when I saw it on the black tshirt. In order to really give the look of a stained glass window effect, there would need to be something joining the two dragonflies together. So, I added the blades of grass to connect the two. I'd submit the one with just the dragonflies, but I wouldn't want to risk splitting votes.

I hope you'll still consider voting. I think it would print beautifully on the black...a little Frank Lloyd Wright ...a little Miro.

llo, I am the exact opposite. I think the green grass/plant stuff in the background is the selling point. If it was just two dragonflies, they would look out of place sitting alone. Instead, they are in a more naturalistic setting, and it brings them together. Plus, with the African-tribal look that they have, the grass is icing on the cake.

Thanks for the comments left on this one! Patch - Somehow I knew you'd like it as you and FLW have a little something in common. My brother didn't realize that FLW did stained glass windows designs. So he's going to 'google'. There are some really nice examples online. I'd love to see FLW's Dana House in Illinois(?). I think it has many examples of the stained glass and lamp designs in it.

Thanks again for the newest comments and votes!

you've really captured the feel of Wright's stained glass designs. I've always been a big fan of his work and this design could easily pass as one of them. well done!

I must say that I am a huge fan of Frank Lloyd Wright and am so happy to see that someone else knows who he is. I think this design is really good and I will vote for it but I do have to say that it is way too complex for a Frank Lloyd Wright design and would have liked to see a more simplified design because Wright's Stained glass was about creating beauty using simple but intriguing designs. But great design anyways and it gets my vote.

Hi Aausterm - Thanks for the post. I totally understand where you are coming from and I agree wholeheartedly that this would not have been a design that Wright would have created. I wanted to create a design that is unique to me, but with inspiration from a Wright Stained Glass work. Does that make sense?

My goal with this design was to create a stained glass style dragonfly design in a modern art style similar to works that I have painted in the past. I used elements found in Frank Lloyd Wright's windows and screens to create each of the wing and blade sections. Each wing section (and blade section) taken separately looks like something one would find in a Wright window.

The colors are a bit more modern....maybe a bit more in the style of Miro. But, Wright did a few very bright windows as well.

Thanks again for the post and for the vote! Hoping for a top 10 finish. Fingers crossed!

I like the color choice for sure and I like the thought put into it. I like to see the higher ranking designs on woot to be more than just pretty or more than just popular. I've been hating on butterflies and dragon flies but your two are nice and well done.

Thanks Noblechic. I honestly didn't know what to expect from the voters regarding this design. I hadn't submitted anything quite like it before. So, I'm happy with the votes. I'd love to see it place higher, but there are some darn good entries this week. I knew there would be a lot of butterflies, so that's why I chose dragonflies. I like a lot of the butterfly designs, but I'd probably only buy one design. So, I'll have to decide which to buy once the 4 derby contenders are selected.

Thanks again for the post and the vote for the dragonfly designs!

Very nicely done, as is your other one. Voted for both, of course. I have been a longtime fan of FLW, too. It's also nice to know that if yours don't quite make it to the top 3 here, eventually they'll be available on your Cafepress site.

Thanks Webfoot. I'd love to say that Cafepress is a good 'runner-up' to not being printed, but I'd be lying. Given CP's prices, it's tough to sell enough shirts to break the $1000.00 payout here. It's another form of exposure, I guess. But, I've sold more 'gifty' items on cafepress than I have tshirts.

I may decide to create a spreadshirt store too now that they have increased their printing options. It'll have to wait until I'm back with all my old files on my computer.

Thanks again for the kind words and the votes. This one's never been in the hotness, so I don't know if it can move up any further by Thursday.

Great design...I think it would look great on one panel of a stained glass lamp too. I hope you finish high also.. I will be inspired to start my holiday shopping early.
