Toe! Love this! Makes me think of the style of artwork Trader Joe's uses on their labels. Love the thick lines and the motion you achieved. Love the neutral shades too!

I'll have to look back to see last derby's entry. I've cut a couple of TJ's labels from their seed and nut bags. I keep telling myself to try doing a derby entry in that thick-lined woodcut style. I'm playing around with a few brushes in ArtRage to do a daily. Maybe I'll try to do one for a derby too.

Did you sketch this directly on the screen with a tablet, or did you sketch it on paper first. I still feel more comfortable with pen and paper, but I'm trying to get used to the tablet too.

to answer both you and uhhuh,, i draw directly on the screen. i sketch out the idea with the pencil tool in Illustrator (usually in blue because i used to draw with a blue pencil in the pen & ink days). lock that layer down and do the design on a second layer. again i use the pencil tool to make the shapes and turn on the shirt color layer to see how it looks against the dark background.

Great on a several levels. My husband is Dutch; nice painterly allusion to Van Gogh; and the whole notion of tilting at windmills is pretty much what my husband does for a living.
Enough about us. I like your take on the theme and the rendering and colour scheme are so refreshing (i.e. a nice departure from the kid-cartoon stuff that Wooters seem to love). Fingers crossed.

Wow. This is really stunning. That is a masterful use of shirt color in the blades of the windmill. Wow!

wow, thanks so much. i considered putting a little Don Quixote over to the right but decided that would shift the concept too much from energy. it really makes me happy that you enjoy this design.

I love the windmill done in a Van Gogh style. Very appropriate! These two latest derbies have seen my favorite shirts in the top four (at the time of this post... knock on wood).

You should be proud, it's great work. I just finished lobbying some friends on Facebook to vote for this. I know they'll like it and we've GOT to get this printed!

Beautiful design, very artistic, but I really can't see myself wearing it.

Did not GMV, but I may change that over the course of the week, and even if I don't and it wins I may buy one if nothing else I do vote for makes it in.

Great job, though, on the artwork. I am impressed.

The use of negative space here is what sells it for my detail-oriented eye. Beautiful... unfortunately brown shirts do not suit my skin tone, but it still will GMV.

ikay, just a few more minutes and this derby will be over and can i just say,, Thank God! this has been one of the most nerve wracking weeks of my life. for those designers who haven't been in the fog yet let me tell ya, it's not all beer and roses.

i'd like to thank everyone who voted for this design, especially curb1510 who lobbied to get others to vote. i'd also like to thank everyone who commented (i know i've missed a few individually) it made it all worth it to know so many liked the design so much. for those who said they can't wear brown, i apologize.. brown just seemed to call out to me on this one. i tried it on navy with blues and it just didn't feel right.

i'd like to congratulate the other foggers, and those that made the BLAs, good work folks!. there were a lot of great designs this week and i wish woot would print more than just 3 per derby, but hey, them's the rules.

thanks again to everyone and see you in the next derby!
