My interpretation would be that he's pandering to the voters by not only including a tree but also birds, both of which are very popular with the woot voters. I'd further hypoothesize that the lightning is a signal of hotness, and the asphalt color is a nod to the fog he hopes to enter.

Of course, I may have been staring at puckers for too long today, causing me to overanalyze the design. ;^)

Birds or not, I was drawn to the great use of halftoning to create a glow around the tree. I could really care less whether or not the birds were actually in there.

Stunning work, Travis -- just as I was about to write off this Derby as a wash for me, I stumbled upon yours and it looks like I'll be spending another $10 this weekend if this sells. Best of luck.

Technical question: those 'halftone' dots... do they have a name? Seriously, I am trying to learn more and more with each week. Also, are they done by hand, or is there a standard tool that makes them, since I have seen them used by a few different people in different ways.

Alas, I do not have illustrator or photoshop - yet! But I am saving my pennies....

They are just called halftones as far as I know. Woot discourages them, but I don't think they are banned outright. I wouldn't have used them, but they printed so nicely on the butterfly shirt that Cho and I did I thought it would work very well on this. You can recreate this circle of halftones in Photoshop this way:

Create a solid circle of color on a layer. Add a quick mask to that layer. Fill the quick mask with black so that none of your circle shows through. Now CTRL select (in windows at least) the little icon picture of your circle in the layers menu. This will lasso select everything on that layer (in this case the circle). Now, with the mask of this layer selected, use the radial gradient tool to fill in the circle from white in the center to transparent near the edges. You'll notice your solid circle of color is now a gradient. However the gradient is controlled by the mask layer. Now with the mask selected go to pixelate/color halftones. Choose a large enough max pixel and change the first setting to 45. Your gradient mask is now a halftone mask.

And that's it. It sounds more complicated than it really is. If you go step by step you'll see it's actually pretty simple and will be knocking out all kinds of halftones in no time. You might want to use them sparingly and only as needed though.

This is really helpful as I've also been wondering how to make halftones. Also, it's really wonderful when the talented and experienced artists/designers divulge their secrets. Whether or not it's difficult, there are some things we amateurs would have a lot more trouble figuring out on our own. So thanks, TG and all you others you make tutorials and videos and post helpful hints such as this one.

Awesome as always, tgentry. But if I wear this, am I being naive, bold, ironic, or mocking? I guess the masterstroke here is managing to appeal to the common man's aesthetics and the critick's elitism.

Regardless of the title and intention, this is some seriously cool artwork. I will definitely wait up on Friday to buy this.

Now, I'm a relative newcomer 'round these parts, but it seems to me that as far as pandering is concerned, if you really wanted to pander, wouldn't there be some ninja dragon pirates leaping out from behind the trunk?

I wasn't sure that Sokowa's rejection wasn't the right call initially but after reading through her arguments I have to agree her rejection is unfair. There's no copyright issue, and it's never been made into a shirt, which clears all of woots rules. I also feel bad that her rejection bumped this entry into the fog, as that isn't a very satisfying way to reach it.

As for this line of threads about the Bruckheimer logo, I hope it's done in sarcasm or to prove a point and not because someone actually thought they had a legit gripe on it. If that's not the case, then I'll just say there's obviously no connection between the two images. There's thousands of images of trees hitting lighting. My entry is about birds escaping a tree being hit by lightning, which has nothing to do with the Bruckheimer thing.

Thanks TGentry. I thought I had a case as well and thought it a remote possibility to be rejected because my design was different enough than a small comic. The truth is, anything goes and you just never know what will get rejected now that the scope is beyond shirts alone. I'm not sure what the scope is.
Good Luck.

I haven't been rejected while in the fog before so I can only imagine how freaked out I'd be, especially that late in the game. You made a strong case, so I hope you get the kind of response you're looking for. Who knows, maybe your fish will get an editors pick next week. ;)

I have never before seen such a clear case of plagiarism in all my life... It is so obvious!

Not only do both images have trees and lightning.

But look at the names. Jerry Bruckheimer Films and TGentry? I mean, come on people, could it be any more obvious? The two names have THREE letters in common. What a blatant rip off!

Besides, look at the obvious: Jerry Bruckheimer makes movies--and many people go to the movies while wearing t-shirts!!

Come one, everyone, let's tear down some clothesline and string up TGentry by the big branch on that Pander Tree.

And then, after that, we can disqualify every other t-shirt in the derby--because I've seen pictures of weather forecasts, turtles, birds, and elephants before. Not to mention the jackass who completely got his idea out of some goofy book.

Let's string 'em all up!!

Whew. Rant over.

TG, my post was complete sarcasm, and I hope the person who posted the link was also being sarcastic. I shouldn't have started a rant in your thread as well, but I'm still hoping for some answers from woot as to why Sokowa's fish design was rejected and other IMO more offensive designs currently in the fog have not been even though I know that plenty of people have tattled and voiced their opinions in the forums. So I apologize for starting something here, but I'm sure you can understand from a serious and talented designer's (not that I include myself in that category) point of view how frustrating woot has been lately. I believe this design's title and subsequent success only further illustrates that point.
