Re: Radium: the Watch of Ra

as an added bonus if you lay down outside wearing this shirt with your head pointing due north and place the tip of a pencil or straw (whatever you have handy) on the grey dot on Ra's cheek, the design works as a sundial. never worry about leaving your watch at home again!

Beautiful Toe! (You did that gorgeous scarab that I loved so much a few derbies ago, right?) Love the details that you've added and how you made the design glow. Wonderful work!

Leave my my watch at home! I'm wearing this shirt everyday--that sounds so much easier than looking at my wrist.

Buy 7 so you can always have a clean one. Ra would want you to.

Re: Radium: the Watch of Ra

a little more info on Radium from Wikipedia:

Radium was formerly used in self-luminous paints for watches, nuclear panels, aircraft switches, clocks, and instrument dials. More than 100 former watch dial painters who used their lips to shape the paintbrush died from the radiation from the radium that had become stored in their bones. Soon afterward, the adverse effects of radioactivity became widely known. Radium was still used in dials as late as the 1950s.

toe2254, I'm glad to see you ended up going with the asphalt version. I think this and Plutonium Powers This Shirt are my two favorites of those I have had a chance to look at thus far. Aside from being superbly executed, I particularly like that there is a lot of meaning here. When studying the periodic table, I too thought of the sun god when I saw Ra, but I didn't know anything about radium's usage. I love that you were able to use your skills and research to make a real work of art that works on several levels. As a big-time Deco fan, I also really dig the numbers. Somehow you were able to fuse Egyptian and Deco styles with zero clash. Kudos, and in my opinion this should be fog-bound. Best of luck.

thanks alot! i'm also a big Decophile as well as a lover of mythology. if i'm not mistaken Egyptian art played a big role in the deco period, which could be why there's no clash. oddly enough the font i used is actually celtic or nordic (i can't remember which) but they looked good to me so i figured what the heck.

right now i think the top ten is looking really good with some excellent work being showcased. i'd like to see tgentry's make its way up there (which i'm sure it will) as well as your footprint. sadly i think your thumbnail is holding it back because there's no way to see the cool details of it. not much you can do about it. thumbnails are always tough to work out. best of luck!

There is a lot of good stuff up top already (as well as below). I haven't even gotten down that far just yet, so I haven't even seen tgentry's just yet (running around a bit in between stops at the computer tonight). I'm sure as always its awesome. I agree with you about the thumbnail. I think I should have at least cropped it off on the bottom. I was going to add the close up to the corner of the thumbnail like I did in the comp, but I didn't know if that was legal (not sure if the thumb can only be reflective of the actual design; if so, using the close-up wouldn't fly despite the fact that it would have helped). I'm happy and surprised with how it has done so far though. My best showing thus far on woot was my first design (a mermaid design for the Independence derby that finished 18th). I am hoping I might top that one, but it's so hard to tell what will happen. Like you said, with so much good art at the top, that's a pretty hard nut to crack. I do think you have a great shot of getting there though. The design is awesome. Best of luck doing so.

as i understand it the thumbnail can be pretty much anything. i've seen them with nothing but "click here for details" so as long as it draws people in to see more it's all good.

i had to check SDS but i remember the mermaid. it was a good design and a great showing for a first design. my first design got something like 38 votes.

toe2254, thank you for the information. Hopefully I can take advantage of that in future derbies. And thanks as well for your mermaid comments. I have to revisit that one at some point. It was rushed and a lot of my details were lost. For instance, someone had written that they preferred her hair down, which is understandable, but her hair was being held up by a small set of shark jaws which was one of my favorite details in the design. It unfortunately was completely lost in its transition from sketch to execution so I plan on doing it again and capturing some of those subtleties more clearly.

in order to vote you have to make a purchase on woot, and glad you liked the design.

I second this. I can't imagine a more appropriate place for glow-in-the-dark ink on a t-shirt design. Or maybe if they don't have super-glow in stock they could just use radium-based ink. Buy 3 and get a free Geiger counter.
Really great work as always, toe.

thanks, much appreciated! the scarab's 60 day hold ends this week. i'm thinking of submitting it to TeeFury so look for it there (if they accept it).

thanks TJ! and thanks to everyone else for the kind words also. my birthday is tomorrow (today actually since it's nearly midnight) and i can't think of anything i'd like more than to see this design break 200. well, that's a lie, i'd like to see it get printed, but i don't see that happening so i'll take what i can get.

oh, also, yes glow in the dark would be a cool added bonus.

toe, the green isn't my favorite as an outline/clock. But the mythology of the design is great, and I have to vote for Ra. 'cos Ra is awesome. Great details on this design, too

(my red pup is named Ra)

& the Gaggle of Girls; so many shirts, so little space in the dresser!

thanks for the vote despite the color. unfortunately Radium glows a specific color and i, being a stickler for accuracy as i am, diligently searched for and matched it. originally i did have a color that was probably more appealing to the masses and probably no one would have noticed.

still, i appreciate the vote!
