This is unbelievably fantastic. C3POwned!

Hell ya!
This is great.

Oh man, awesome design. Glad you liked my tin man, thank you. PS your "Fat Horse" in the old west derby was fantastic. Good luck!

Only episodes 2 thru 6.

Possible Rejection Reason: Lucas Arts called... they're angry a subclass robot like the Tin Man could ever think it could win against C3P0 ( the bookies, however, are saying four-to-one against dear ol' tin bucket )
Re: Tin: Old Skool
wow this design must win 1st or at least be printed.
Re: Tin: Old Skool
Greatest possible rejected shirt ever. Very cool indeed.
Re: Tin: Old Skool
oh man, take that you whiny gold failbot! I so want this.
Re: Tin: Old Skool
This is so funny and true! I never thought about pinning these two against each other, but if these metal-men were to fight, that old, tin-man guy would so kick that gold robot's arse clear over the rainbow. Either that, or it's Steve and Jimmy at one outta control costume party! Go, Steve, Go! Great comp, btw!

I have no choice but to give my support to any shirt with a Star Wars reference that makes it through the derby.

Please. C3PO is tinman, scarecrow and cowardly lion all wrapped up into one... Lucas stole liberally from Oz and a dozen other movies to make his own, This is just MGM getting even.

Actually, "C3POwned!" would be a great caption to add to this shirt!!!

Probably, but I'd never put this much work into a design and risk it. Especially when Lucas is one of the most adamant about protecting his franchise.
However, it does appear Joel deems this acceptable since it hasn't been rejected yet.

WANT BAD.
But seriously, this shirt rocks my socks off.
I am pulling so hard for this shirt that I strained my back. A wonderful concept!
Re: Tin: Old Skool
This shirt needs to be printed.
Re: Tin: Old Skool
Please get back into the fog. In the 70s people's hearts were filled with a love for a new metal man, and finally the TIn Man's feelings toward the situation come out! This is terrific and totally the way that fight would end up. Congrats on making something that transcends this competition.

It's whatever color you want. As long as you want navy blue.

Eh, I wish it was on black. Would make it stand out a lot more. Still, I just love the design.
I haven't been watching a derby entry this closely since "Suburban Blitzkrieg". I like this shirt so much I may purchase more than one . . . just for me!
Re: Tin: Old Skool

I still like to think of it as a costume party gone punchy... and I laugh, and laugh, laugh -- 'cause honestly folks, the tin man punching anyone is pretty flippin' scary if you ask me.
Re: Tin: Old Skool
we must keep this in the fog!! MUST!!!
Re: Tin: Old Skool
Great drawing and idea! But does this mean we can spoof Star Wars now? I really wish Woot staff was a little more vocal on what they were thinking in general. Even if it was a quick post saying "No worries guys, we've decided this is going to pass rejection"
Re: Tin: Old Skool
I'm definitely gonna get this. I'd love to see a little caption or even thought box from C3PO that says "[Sn]ide Bastard" and maybe have a line crossing out the "ide" so it says "snide bastard" and "tin bastard".
sokowa wrote:Great drawing and idea! But does this mean we can spoof Star Wars now? I really wish Woot staff was a little more vocal on what they were thinking in general. Even if it was a quick post saying "No worries guys, we've decided this is going to pass rejection"
I agree on both counts. A) This is an awesome shirt and B) we should know where the line is drawn with Star Wars shirts. I was under the impression they were completely off limits, parody or not. This definitely falls under parody, but many that have been rejected before did too. If I decide to do a Star Wars parody next week will it get rejected or no? Let's face it, a good Star Wars related shirt (and this is a rare good one) is going to be hard to beat. It would be nice to know if it's now fair game.
Re: Tin: Old Skool
But that's the beauty of Shirt.Woot! Nothing is certain, and every day brings surprises. I don't mind uncertainty that much, and I usually like surprises (usually), so Woot's inconsistency doesn't bother me much. Guess I'm one of the few.
I'm betting Joel is keeping this as a last-minute reject, waiting until he has EVERYONE'S attention, then zapping it. That would be the most effective way to put across the message of "NO STAR WARS ALLOWED".
Then again, I could be wrong, and Joel's really okay with this one, for some obscure reason. It could place in the top 3, be printed, and lots o' Wooters would wear their "Old Skool" shirts with pride and happiness. BTW, if it makes it to being printed, I'll buy one as a gift, definitely. It's an excellent design!

Nothing is certain. And I like being surprised by their choice of derby themes, but not random rejections/no rejections thing. Who will want to put a lot of time in something that might be rejected for odd reasons. We come here to study and learn the rules so we can work within them. We are trying to work WITH woot. I didn't like the uncertainty of my fish when it passed 3 stages of rejections then got dumped right at the end, that never ever feels good. And I'm not the only one where this happened. And if Joel is indeed waiting until the last minute (theoretically) that's not an effective way to prove a point, that would be down-right malicious.

totally agreed sokowa.
designs have been rejected that have hinted at far less star wars than this design, so I am confused. I can understand (ish) not rejecting designs that aren't going to print, but this design has been rising in the ranks for a couple days.
I was very upset when your fish was rejected suddenly, and am having a hard time reconciling woot's rules and rejections with what really happens in the derbies. feh.
Very well drawn, rglee, just too close to the MGM tin man and C3PO for my vote. look forward to your design next week!
Re: Tin: Old Skool
This is really well done, but I think Woot might run into some copyright problems with Lucasfilm in using the image of C3P0 if they print this shirt...

Though I am not him and I can't say for sure, I think that he was merely wondering if woot has changed their minds regarding how strict they would be in enforcing the no Star Wars rules, like many others here. If they choose to throw those rules out the window (which would allow for the printing of this shirt) I think that would make a lot of woot fans (like myself) happy and they would certainly want to buy the shirts. But I think the designers would want to know the shirts wouldn't be rejected for Star Wars references before putting time and effort into them. I don't think people are mad that this shirt, which is well done and clever, is doing well. I just think many people are just asking for a re-clarification more-so than complaining. Though some might be, I don't know.
Re: Tin: Old Skool
A threadless shirt
I think I figured out the star wars issue... You can use copyrighted SW characters, but only if they are shown with their backs to the viewer. Apparently Mr. G. Lucas and his army of litigators cannot recognize them from the wrong-way-round.
Also, you can avert being sued by Lucas by standing very, very still (his vision's based on movement I'm told.)
This is an awesome shirt rglee, I hope it wins.
Re: Tin: Old Skool

Believe me, I've had a malicious rejection. Whoever did the rejection (Joel, I'm assuming) said my shirt promoted fascism, of all things. I think he must have been on crack or drunk at the time. But yeah, I've felt that sting, so I know what you're talking about.
Maybe I don't take it so seriously now since I stopped submitting designs. FWIW, I hope you never get another rejection like the fish one. That was not nice. And I usually vote for your designs, because you usually submit good stuff.
But don't read too much into what I said, please. I'll go over what I said again: If this one gets rejected at the last minute like yours did, there won't really be any question as to why, and if it does, it's anybody's guess why they would leave it until the last minute, but they could. Since they've done it before, who knows what they'll decide to do?
I was stating a supposition as to what might happen, not saying "This is what WILL happen", and I said I don't get all upset about Woot's shenanigans anymore. I think it's okay for me to say that, don't you? I'm not saying how other people should feel, just how I feel.
EDIT: My apologies to rglee - sorry about the discussion here.

Oh Webfoot, everything you said was perfectly fine. I had no issues with your points and theoreticals. It was a well written post. I hope mine didn't come back as negative or irate. god bless you if you can put up with it. Most times I do. But it can be at least frustrating and confusing. I'm just hoping that this doesn't get rejected at this point. My REAL point is I wish woot was better at communicating with us. Just a two sentence answer on this and any other what ifs that were in the past saying "ya, we saw this and we have decided to let it stay". Or something similar.
And yes, sorry for derailing the thread here. I'll get it back on track . .
Rglee, this is very well done, I wish it luck and I wish all your designs in the future luck since you obviously spend time on your work.

No no I get it. Didn't mean to start anything or get anyone in trouble. Just saying I will buy this shirt (maybe even two) no matter who prints it. It'd be a shame if they end up rejecting this one at the end because they'd lose out on some serious sales. I really want this shirt so I hope it wins.

Speaking as someone who has actually worn a full replica of the suit, it is mighty uncomfortable (especially that unpadded chin piece, ouch). But it was feel awesome as hell to punch someone in that thing. It's a shame the only other people around were other Oz characters and small children.
