Hmm, well lets see.... I'll go through my process and then maybe that will translate into some "tips"

First I looked at a TON of photos of fire to see how the colors and shapes played into eachother. Then I drew some rough flames in the shapes I wanted, scanned then placed in illustrator. I used 5 colors layered on top of each other. Each color is just slight tone adjustment to give the fire some "volume"

Here is a layered and un-layered image to show you guys how I put it together. I hope this is helpful!

What? Why wouldn't they be able to print? Why would you even write something like that? I've seen much smaller halftones print! This is a great design, you got my vote!

Keep in mind this is coming from the truly clueless, but maybe it's too many colors? The creator used six different colors to layer the fire, plus the dancer. Shirts are limited to six colors per print, so if each of those six is distinguishable, it seems like it's too many.

Whether it's printable or not, my compliments to the artist. It's awesome and very realistic for a shirt. Nicely done.

It's actually only 5 colors in the fire, so with the black that's 6 and it should be fine.

Actually it looks like he used five colors for the fire. The top one is the combination of the five. The dancer makes the sixth color.

Very nicely done!

Hey guys! I just wanted to thank everyone for keeping me in the "new hotness" for so long, its awesome! I didn't know these questions about printability were coming up, but to clarify, the fire is 5 colors and the black silhouette makes 6 colors. If that is the controversy, you can note the image I uploaded earlier which shows the colors of the fire. As for printability? I can't think of a reason why Woot couldn't print, maybe someone could enlighten me? I'd hate to have it do well, only to be rejected!
Again, Thanks guys!

Oh, durr. I didn't look closely enough at the artist's explanation. I saw six things there and didn't even pay attention that the first was the whole thing, and then the following five were the breakdown.

i would like it better if the figure were to blend into the shirt more (which, who can tell with on screen appearances?) and possibly have a couple of layers of highlight to it in reaction to the fire. the very flat shape of the person distracts me a lot from the fire.

I can totally understand your point. My original design had some highlights to the figure, but I decided that it got way too muddled with the flames so I took them out. I felt the shape of the flames was most important. Thanks for your comments though, its always nice to have a great critique!

I've been working on fire styles. Look likes there's another awesome method that I didn't think of and I can't use because I don't want to be unoriginal. Plus it seems so unique that if anyone tried to use it, they would be spotted and heckled relentlessly. Way to raise the bar....

But seriously, awesome! Glad to see theres still stuff out there being discovered.

why would that be? It is a very effective way to draw fire, I don't think it's particularly new, just masterfully done. I'm afraid of it because I don't think I could do it as well, and there aren't that many opportunities to use 5 colors on flames. Maybe on a site where you can use 8 or 9 colors, you could use it to best effect.

well done, anyway!

@sokowa – thanks so much for your compliments. Coming from such a great artist, it REALLY means a lot to me! Your design is also very beautiful and I hope we can both stay in the fog!

@andrewg2 – No way, I have to claim to any certain technique! I posted my process for that reason

@earthart – I hadn’t thought that people may think that I had used it from a photo and just live-traced it or something (hmmm…damn that would have been soooooo much easier *giggles*). I suppose its good that I posted my layers to show that I’m not a thief Thanks so much for your comments. Good luck with your design as well, I truly love it!

@endangeredomega – I too am a pyro

Thank you to everyone who has voted so far and for so many nice comments on my thread. I’ve seen some not-so-nice comments on some other threads and I’m glad my design isn’t garnering any I’d probably have to lock myself in the bathroom or something …

Thanks! Thats what I was counting on actually, I really wanted the dancer to be very secondary to the flames. That is why it is just a simple silhouette in black compared to the 5 colors that make up the flames. Thanks for the input though, can't please everyone

This is incredible beautiful. It's perfectly on theme, but I want the shirts for Beltane! This would be a GREAT gift for the firetender and for the scapegoat who leaps through the flames.

This is the only one in the Fog right now that I would even consider buying. The other three, while pretty, just don't do anything for me and I'm not the kind of girl that wears t-shirts with flowers on them. I was wondering about the black on asphalt too, but it makes sense if you want it to be subtle. Loop's silhouettes are the same way in her pig design. Good luck this weekend!

Yeah the design is great, I'm just not a fan of browns and yellows on asphalt. It's like drinking and driving or Pat Boone and heavy metal. It just doesn't go together. Still think I'll add my last second vote on account of the designer having the chutzpah to do flames. They're hard to do and these look fantastic.
