Re: Donut Panic!

The expressions on both are absolutely wonderful. The trickle of jelly from the mouth adds that extra something to really make it pop, and the other donut has one of the best expressions of sheer panic I've seen yet in this derby.

Good job!

Wow! Just when I thought that I couldn't handle one more terrified food item, this shirt came along and made me change my mind. I hated the pumpkin pie, lemons, marshmallows, and a couple weeks ago's apples, but I LOVE this one! The look on the live donut's face is just great!

This is the best terrified food entry so far. Hands down. It should win, and all future terrified food entries should be banned for 6 months, or for the duration of this shirt's print lifespan (whichever is longer).

And those are all bad?

How about these?

Or arguably this?

Do you approve more of the art on anthropomorphic panicking nonfood?

I suppose all those suck too, but this one, oh, this is a work of bloody art. That other carp is child's play. This should be framed. No other anthro food fear design is better than these donuts. What hacks those other dudes are. No detail on the lemons, no texture on the marshmallows. Total lack of stick arms and zombie eyes. Who wants that?

I think the point is that edibles in mortal fear has been done to, er, death. Saying that this one is the only good one, besides being something which, had I said it, would be proof of what a total jerk I am, is like the girls who used to argue that 98 degrees were better than backstreet boys. Even if it's true, there's still a flooded market. I'd rather sign something that has a vain chance of standing out.

How is mediocre. I don't like the colors.
about is meh. Looks like a napkin doodle.
these - I just don't like at all. Reminds me of squadron logos. I forget what the name for them is. The chicken creeps me out.
this - The bright veggie greens against the pale, lemony yellow bg doesn't do anything for me - nor does the eye-infection pink in addition to the others.
panicking is cute, though it doesn't jump out and scream "BUY ME!".
nonfood - While the facial expressions are fun, I dislike the gray against the desaturated baby blue, as well as the bar just below the neckline. Necessary for the concept, but it just doesn't appeal to me.

I never said they suck. There's a margin between suck and good. Usually mediocre, so-so, and meh, go between the two. When it comes to anthropomorphic food, I prefer child's play. I would never buy this framed. I might buy it to wear though.

I don't care about detail on lemons. Lemons bleeding doesn't appeal to me so I could care less about the artwork.

Texture on the marshmallows? You mean the stippling that doesn't look like a marshmallow bubbling to gooey perfection? Even if it did resemble a marshmallow, the style of the facial expressions and the awkward fire are not something I would pay $10 for. Not my cup of tea.

The appeal in this to me is:

- the colors aren't abrasive to me
- the glaze/frosting looks like glaze/frosting
- the stippling actually resembles donut texture (kind of buttermilk donuts, the thick batter kind)
- the blood is plausible and I take pleasure in sucking the blood out of my donuts

I love giving my donuts faces (happy faces, sad faces, terrified faces, frowny faces, panicked faces) and then taking a bite out of their face. The jelly filling oozes from the center (depending on the thickness you have to make it gush sometimes). You try to lick it clean before it drips on your shirt, or the jelly runs down your hand, leaving a sticky trail of red goo. The defaced donut stares back at you, bleeding out its side.

Unlike the others, this anthropomorphic panicking food shirt has art with a degree of cute that I appreciate, colors that I don't object to, and a concept that I can relate to fondly.

I don't care if edibles in mortal fear has been done to death. So have octopi submissions. Saying that this one is the only good one means that by my shirt standards (which by no means coincide with woot voter's perferences), this is a good shirt, and to my knowledge is the only distraught food shirt that I actually like.

This stands out to me as a food shirt, as I'm sure that Cho's shirt stands out to you as an octopus shirt.

People say they're sick of food shirts like this, but they're really not. People love them. Perhaps not the people who comment on the threads and who follow Woot daily, but everybody else does. Heck, my pumpkin shirt sold over 800 in the last Woot-off. I'm not saying that to brag, but to prove a point: people love 'em.

Sycophantic? "Attempting to win favor from influential people by flattery"? Are we using the same definition? O_o

I have no idea what you're following, but I'll give you some cliffnotes anyway.

1) I don't like noisdois's pumpkin shirt. The art is a little clip-arty for me, and I would've preferred a pumpkin splatted on the side of the road instead of a pie. I'm sad every time I see a roadkill pumpkin. :<

2) From what I've seen, I think noisdois is a nice guy. Was it the most original concept in the world? No. Did he steal art? Not that I know of. Did he break any rules? Not that I know of. Fair win.

I can dislike the design without hating on the designer - unless there's some new rule stating I can't. Did I miss that one? Is it either hate-hate or love-love? I'm having trouble following...

Oh gosh, that means I'd have to hate on so many people like riffmaster, noisdois, haxrox, rglee, illuminator, jimiyo, kdeuce, dsladek, sundbe, jadenkale, ehal and so many more!

Too much hating for me.

Pumpkins sold 666 in 2 days
his turtle sold 170 in 2 days = 836 between 2 shirts, so he actually made $1672 those 2 days.

Now so far this week:
Pumpkins sold 745
His Turtle sold 210 = 955 so he made $1910 from Tuesday at midnight to last night at midnight.

Are you sure about those numbers? I thought that the pumpkin shirt was around 3450 before the woot-off, and close to 4250 after. You're probably right, though. It sounds like you have a much more sophisticated tracking system than I do...

Woot off wasn't until Tuesday and I took the numbers from Tuesday after the reckoned shirts dropped from the list at midnight. So you started at 3643 at Tuesday morning (midnight) and at midnight this morning you were at 4388 for pumpkins.

I agree whole heatedly and 100%.

Especially about the Octopi / other cephalopod based woots. If people are tired of food and other themes which have become cliche on this site then simply don't vote for them, or better yet innovate something new that all the other Wooters will then emulate and ultimately transform in to its own cliche.

But it would be a shame to let a great design like this one fall threw the cracks simply because of an Unofficial Food Related Woot Embargo, hereby know as the U.F.R.W.E.

Leave "No Grapes" in the Haight.

I agree. It has been done, but for some reason it keeps getting done, and keeps getting printed. so clearly, more people that vote than post like them. I bought the pumpkin shirt, my husband has the marshmallows, and I had a genuine jumping-up-and-down-squealing-with-excitement fit when I got the lemons in this last round of random shirts. had to fight my sister-in-law to the death to keep her from stealing it. I love the terrified food. and will probably buy this, just so that I can have the complete food set. awesome design.

Again, it's about what you can do with a concept. There is very very very little one can do with the panicked food concept, because it is a specific concept. As for octos, if we just look at Cho's work alone, we have the pattern derby one with one big octo made up of smaller ones, we have sashimi hunters, which had a bunch of little divers getting back at their nemesis with chopsticks, and we have this current one, where the war wages on with an octopus coming after divers with nets. Three different concepts with a similar main element. As opposed to a bunch of identical concepts with only the type of item changed. There are plenty of action films out there, too, but some take the action genre and build something at least slightly different, while others put out Die Hard 14.

I agree completely. But this begs the question - what's wrong with turtles? Trees and bird silhouettes, like panicking food, usually end up pretty much the same, but turtles are just as versatile as cephalapods.

This is very true, and I think this is largely a matter of usage. The turtle-fetish seems very woot specific... I may well have ignored, since I'm not a huge turtle fan, but I am just not seeing as many turtle shirts anywhere else, even in voting stages, as I do at woot. Something like Fable's turtle shirt this week is fine, because it utilizes a unique turtle aspect... the concept wouldn't have worked with most other animals. I found "Turtle Rage" totally charming largely for the style, which can often be a deciding factor. Again, also, the concept was one that benefit greatly from the choice of a turtle. Others, tho (and for better or worse, I think yours applied) seem to throw turtles in places where the design benefits less from them than the designer does. I'm not saying that was your inspiration to go turtle, but that your design would have been largely the same no matter what you drew. A lot of woot turtlework seems to work on this level... it has grown to be something many designers will work into a design for votes whether the concept is strong or not... they rely on the turtle for strength, as they rely on the bird or the tree or the koi or whatever. Like anything else, versatility is all about how it's used. Chicken is incredibly versatile, but if you only ever get it fried from KFC, you can't expect people to want dinner at your place. As the old idiom goes, familiarity breeds contempt.

tgentry didn't make a tree shirt last fall. I don't even think he was entering until nearly winter.

I really love this shirt. In fact, this shirt convinced me to register and comment. Kudos.

I can respect that. I did have rationale for using a turtle, and when I created the original design (only my second derby entry ever) I wasn't familiar enough with woot to know that turtles were a meme. The idea just clicked with a turtle. But you're right - other animals could definitely have been substituted in. I don't think the design would have felt the same with another creature though.

We should compile a list of interesting, recognizable animals that haven't been done on woot. Preferably animals that aren't *too* hard to draw.

(Unofficial) Derby Rules (outdated?)
Designing for the Derby (definitely outdated)
Tips for New Designers (always useful)

So I had this early meeting this morning. When I entered the room I saw a box of donuts. There were no survivors.

Very nicely done! The shirt color complements the design (er, 'disaster') perfectly.

If I could vote more than once for it, I would.

I get a kick out of wearing food related shirts to the gym, so I will probably buy this shirt. The color of the shirt and the fact that pink frosted donuts are my favorite just adds to the appeal.

And I'm pretty sure that the voting button says "I'd want one" not "I think this idea is the most original and on topic" so the rest of the debate is pointless.

First of all, This is a GREAT shirt. The color choices are *PERFECT*. It sure looks like you are going to have a well-deserved win!

Secondly: Huzzah! I agree with this sentiment!

I think we all have our own favorites and dislikes. Same with shirt colors. No matter which one you place your design on, SOMEONE is going to say "Well, I would have bought it, if you would only put it on *******"
As for specific designs, I think it is the same. Personally I happen to like the better done of the horrified food entries. I absolutely ADORE my Happy Bento Box shirt, as did the little kids and 1 baby at the family get-together I was at this weekend. I have Oh Burned! and my daughter's favorite shirt is the Lemonade one. We probably have others as well. I also happen to like Trees, birds, turtles, and yes, even Koi. Not every single one; just the well-done or amusing ones - or ones that particularly catch my attention for one reason or another.
As for me personally, I think the only general categories I will not personally buy are Zombies and bugs. I just don't like them. But other people do, so who am I to say "Hey! No more of those!!", hmm..?
If your entry fits the theme, and is well done, IMHO, submit! There are lots of people out there who aren't commenting, but who, obviously ARE buying.
