This is a very cool idea. Shame the light gray only comes in "heather," would've worked better solid for this one.

I don't know if they could copyright a screen and some buttons...especially since there's no text on the design. I hope it stays, but it's ultimately up to Woot to take the chance.

Some how, i feel like there should be a mario picture on the screen, it would really give the gameboy life. just a though, otherwise its great!

ROFL! I think it looks fine the way it is. I don't think they can really take this out for copyright. Just hope no one has done it already =P. I would sooo wear this on Halloween while I'm giving out candy to the kids.

I have to say I'm with you on that. I feel like I should dislike it but there's just something 'right' about it. It works really well. If/when it wins, I'll be hard pressed to blame the voters and might even have to get one.

Wow this shirt is awesome. So many people bash retro gaming shirts because people have made shirts in the same category before, but when you click to vote on something it says "I want one" not "I vote that this shirt is the most original and artistic in the derby". Thats right, if you want to win make a shirt that people will buy, not the one that you would see hanging in an art gallery. Anyway, I'm getting off topic. This shirt is awesome. When it wins I'll definitely buy it. GMV.

Actually since the shirt doesnt actually say the words "Nintendo" or "Gameboy" it shouldnt be a problem. Just like how people can make Tetris flash games, that look exactly like the original, as long as they dont call it Tetris. But then again, if a representative of Nintendo sends Woot a cease and desist letter, we will know for sure.

If only real-life had a pause button. Blast you, Nintendo!!!

I would have liked to see you use the gray of the shirt to add some highlights on the buttons and make it look more 3D, but either way, It still looks cool.

Why? The color is based off the original brick gameboy which was a very light gray. I myself had the clear see through version because I thought it was cool to see all the circiutry =P.

"silver" or "slate", for shirts, is usually this exact gray. The issue people are bringing up regarding the shirt color is that woot prints on Heather Gray, which is a bit more mottled, like a gym shirt. It's not a solid gray tone... there's a lot of textured gray shades, like this:

Isn't the mere shape of Mickey Mouse's head owned by Disney? Just the lack of text doesn't change the obvious recognizability of the Game Boy. Woot rejected a shirt for using the power button, for Pete's sake. I had a shirt rejected for looking similar to Dr. Suess' characters. This ought to easily be rejected, and when you consider I had a design rejected out of the fog for looking too much like a van Gogh painting, which was certainly not even under copyright, it's hard to justify this staying.

Re: PRESS MY BUTTONS

Man, this is the first one I'm actually considering making for myself if Woot rejects it (or it doesn't make the cut). It's a frelling awesome idea.

You could use a fabric-safe marker to draw images on it. Or, if you're feeling really rich and have too much time on your hands you could create an ePaper screen...

If you're feeling especially rich and have no life you could take an original gameboy circuitry, hook it up to the epaper screen and install some buttons... Of course, having someone pushing your belly might be a) uncomfortable b) not work so well (unless you flex your abs) and c) be really really strange if it was done in public...

bigbadbrad1212 wrote:why hasn't this been rejected?

Why should it? Is the screen and button positions trademarks? There are plenty of shirts with NES-like controllers displayed on them but no text, and I'm fairly certain that they're not cleared with Nintendo...

You might have trouble if you tried to do a Wii or DS shirt though...

i have some heather grey american apparel t's and i don't think the design will look bad on heather. that being said, i have no interest in purchasing or wearing this shirt. maybe that means i shouldn't comment, but i wouldn't want the heather to dissuade people from voting for it if it's what they want.

You might get it by Halloween, but there's a good chance you won't unless you pay for overnight shipping. I know my shirts take 2 weeks to get to me, and I don't live very far from Texas. >.<

I want this shirt for everyday wear, not necessarily for Halloween...so I'll personally be cool with saving the $5 and letting it crawl its way to me.

They don't copyright them, but they do trademark them. They get design trademarks on various shapes and configurations that define the product. The Game Boy design was officially trademarked in 1992, but it's not an active trademark anymore. It expired in 2003. Hope this helps clear things up.

Thanks for actually taking the time to do some research to answer the question of whether this should be rejected or not. I would of loved to see more detail on the gameboy, maybe some 3d buttons. But then people would go around poking the buttons to check if they were real. Otherwise a simple and clever idea.
