Re: A Wonderful Day

Thanks for the comments and votes so far, guys! I've been out of the game since summer ended due to school, but classes are over and I've only got a few final exams left, and I'm optimistic that I won't need to spend all my time studying.

For anyone who wasn't around for the Green derby, this guy is the cousin of the Green-Eyed Monster from Yay Frendz! I was going to make it the same monster, but the spikes would be invisible from this perspective and I needed another splash of orange somewhere. This guy looks a bit like an egg, hey? The shadow underneath the monster is actually a sketchy crack along the ground - he's a heavy fella.

I'm not too optimistic that it'll manage to stay through to the end. Prove me wrong, people!

Not gonna respond to everyone just because it'll mostly be the same "thank-you" message over and over again. But hey,

@everyone - Thanks!

@anmllover86 - I'm not sure about that. This one is a sociopath. Can't you see the destructive gleam in his eye?

@Toe - Thank-you sir. It's good to be back.

@StudyAbroadFund - He's actually a big guy. He's not that far away from the city.

Way to go, E! Your first derby in a while and you're back with a vengeance! Great design- really cute, but it's also cool the way you created a sense of depth by using thick lines for foreground and none in the background. Also, it's definitely in the recognizable eHalcyon style, which is a cool thing. And def GMV!

Re: A Wonderful Day

My continued thanks for the comments and votes. I wasn't optimistic for staying in the fog, and I was right. Still, I'm optimistic for top ten.

@ramyb - Thank-you, sir. Looking forward to getting One Fish, Two Fish - it'll take about a month to get to Canada though. XP

@Irrelevant - Doesn't look like it's going to make it, but I suppose much could happen before Thursday.

@Loopy - I actually entered something last week, but it was, uhh, not very good at all.

@JW - I'm glad the feeling got through!

@godfreytemple - I wish you had been right. Unfortunately for me, the adorability here doesn't match with the cat, the dog and the squirrel.

@NonDescript - ya rly!

@Shoppingdingo - Wow, much appreciated! I actually chose olive because I thought there would be lots of baby blue and lemon designs. I'm not sure I could have found good colour schemes with either of those shirt colours either. Looking at the fog, maybe I should have tried asphalt.

@sekiyoku - Thanks! I've been on a hiatus from designing because of school work. Designs take me forever because I am not much of an artist, but we're into finals now and I wanted to take a break from studying. Congratulations on having two designs in the fog this week!

@bradyson - To ensure city pandemonium, take one fun loving monster and tell him that there's broccoli in all those buildings. Yay broccoli!

@Boots - Thank-you. I wasn't sure whether to go with this green or one that matched more with the olive, but was darker. Forum-goers said this was better, so I obliged. I wish your lollipops girl was doing better.

@MoreFull - Your votage is much appreciated!

@paulkremer - Hopefully I'll be able to keep it up at least until January hits.

@capture - Merci beaucoup!

@rglee129 - This is actually my second in a while. I just sort of let last week's go under the radar because it was so terrible.

@piankeshaw - Didn't you make that same comment on dekon's Thrift entry? I am disappointed that I only get a recycled line. I wish you were right that "we have a winner", but the fog looks firmly settled without me in it.

@Jykinturrah - Japanese? Can't read it. I hope it was something nice.

@Jestik - It's not a dinosaur - just an egg-shaped monster. I really like the orange-green combo too, and I still don't have an olive shirt in my collection. Sigh. Thanks for the defence!

@xxchange - Thanks.

@speedcheetah - Thanks. You still came out with a great design with those trees. Your detail image doesn't do it justice - great use of shirt colour and all around a fun design. Voted.

@HeartlineTwist - Really? I wasn't around at noon, when you made that comment. That's exciting. Maybe I still have a chance at breaking into the fog to get another SDS So Close badge!

@treychel - I got that comment a lot on my Green derby entry. I like this design more than the one I did before and I don't think the poem would add much to it, unless the text went on the back. If I take this design to another site, I'll see if adding the poem to the back is an option.

GMV for 'A Wonderful Day' (you actually had it since Saturday). Is it too late to withdraw this and avoid the 60 day wait so you could sell it on another site with the poem on the back? Is it wrong of me to hope this doesn't win, so I can get it with the poem? I definitely think this should win, mind you. This is one of those shirts with broad appeal, that would look cute on a child and playful on an adult (and besides, I need more green shirts).

Re: A Wonderful Day

@lucky - Thanks! It's a shame your purple crayon monster didn't make it in the Book Titles derby. I thought it was a good one.

@klawrence - I actually do too.

@Boots - I shan't see it then. Thank-you for the well wishes.

@OnyxEyez - It's not wrong if you don't know it's wrong. Or something like that.

@elphie1313 - I considered that to be one of the goals of a design this derby. Glad it made you smile.

@bro3of4 - Currently back in the fog, though I suspect I'll be swinging in and out at best. We can be optimistic that it finishes in the fog and that there are some crazy ties somewhere in the top.

@heartluce - I can't really tell from your tone if you're just musing or are making an accusation. In case it's the latter, I talked about the horns in one of my posts above. Here's the relevant bit:
"For anyone who wasn't around for the Green derby, this guy is the cousin of the Green-Eyed Monster from Yay Frendz! I was going to make it the same monster, but the spikes would be invisible from this perspective and I needed another splash of orange somewhere."
So no, my previous monster did not have horns. The addition of the horns was not a rip from Edgar's design; I'm sure most people would agree that horns are a pretty standard feature of monsters. I just added them for some extra colour and to make the design a little bit more visually interesting.

Thanks everyone for the votes so far. I'm quite surprised that this made it back into the fog.

Since I've been seeing the "is it really optimism?" thing a lot, here's some definitions of optimism.

Optimism-an outlook on life such that one maintains a view of the world as a positive place.

Optimism-expecting the best in this best of all possible worlds

Optimism-the optimistic feeling that all is going to turn out well

Optimism-a general disposition to expect the best in all things

This monster on this shirt clearly feels that the world is a positive place.

I dunno, this one just isn't doing it for me. I'm all for the cute monster concept, and I like the idea, but the look and composition is just leaving me cold - the monster is wide-eyed, but doesn't have any real energy for me, and the buildings look... I dunno. The unrealistic look of them just doesn't work for me.

Nice concept, but I just don't dig the execution.

Yeah, I feel the unrealistic look of the buildings really clashes with the hyper realism of the monster bouncing off into the foreground.[/sarcasm]

Well, it's specifically that the monster, though un-realistic in the sense that it doesn't exist, is at least sharply and crisply defined. It's comprised entirely of clean, neat lines, and has a very well defined silhouette. Even the basic shape of the monster is simply and cleanly constructed - everything is made up of only a few, bold, crisp lines.

The buildings, meanwhile, look as though they are melting. There's no clear sense of what building is what, or of an overall shape to the city. They are muddy, vaguely defined, etc.

The monster is not realistic in that it's, you know, a monster, but it's at least a clear, clean, and sharp image. The contrast between that and the buildings... eh. Doesn't do it for me. YMMV, and the voters' mileage clearly does.

I just assumed that the buildings were melting because they were on fire. xD

Also, I think they are faded to give the perception of depth in the picture. Since the picture is only five colors, maybe a lighter (than black) line color could have been used to define the buildings and replace the color for the path/shadow.

I think that would have helped, yeah. But even just committing to right angles, I think, would have helped. I don't think you need to individually define the buildings - but a skyline built out of right angles would better mesh with the clean lines of the monster.

Re: A Wonderful Day

@OnyxEyez - Thanks! I was surprised and delighted to see it making a run at the fog again.

@realitytwist - I hope this makes it so you aren't disappointed!

@sbaszto - I was actually going for a more "blissfully unaware" feeling, where the monster doesn't know all the mayhem he's caused. My take on the theme was not "optimism in a a bleak situation". Rather, I wanted to show an individual that was simply optimistic in nature, always looking at life like it's wonderful.

@DeadFrog - Thanks for the defence!

@Oeberon - I was told the same by someone else too. Writing silly poems like this is a nice break from the usual stuff I do.

@Schrobbs - I haven't submitted for several months, so it's not a big deal. Nice to have you back, sir!

@PhilSandifer - Thanks for your comment, and I appreciate the input. Re the lack of "any real energy" - I think I agree. What do you think would have been a good way to convey more energy? My first thought now is the addition of motion lines to show the monster's movement, but I don't really like motion lines - I don't think they mesh with my thick-lined style, since they just come out looking clunky.

@HeartlineTwist - Thanks for defending my work as well.

@Xanzibar - Much appreciated, Xanz.

@PhilSandifer - A friend of mine mentioned the meltiness as well. Re: the contrast between the monster and the background - that is exactly what I was going for. I wanted to differentiate the foreground and the background to, as sekiyoku said, "give the perception of depth". I tried to do this through my colour choices (using a dark green for the silhouette) and through the style - i.e. no outline around the background. I'll admit that the melted appearance of the buildings was actually not intentional, in that I didn't mean for them to look melted. However, I did intend for the cityscape to look messy and NOT clean or crisp, since it is supposed to be a city in chaos following the destructive wake of the monster. I deliberately avoided the use of straight lines and right angles, since that would imply a relative lack of destruction. The intended feeling I had in mind for the silhouettes was that of ruins and rubble, with separate buildings having fallen and crumbled into one another, forming a single massive heap of debris. Given your description, I'd say that I succeeded.

@sekiyoku - That was my explanation when my friend pointed out the melting. As I said above, I avoided the use of an outline for the buildings because they are background elements and shouldn't be as sharply defined as the foreground. When I was new to the derbies I tried to use six colours every time. Now, however, I feel that I shouldn't go out of my way to use the extra colour(s) if I don't have to. In this case, I don't think I do.

@PhilSandifer - I think that the use of right angles would actually have clashed with the monster rather than meshing better. If you look at the monster, you'll see that it's made up almost entirely of curves. The buildings are similarly smooth and rounded out. Overall, I believe it adds to the whimsy of the scene. Right angles would have detracted from that, in my opinion. But again, thank-you for the constructive criticism.

Thank-you everyone for this last-minute push. I am honestly floored, stunned, and [insert more synonyms of ecstatic disbelief]. I am actually feeling optimistic for a third place finish now! My only regret is that it would be at the expense of tgentry's design, which I personally feel is the best of the fog both in idea and in execution.
