wunderbar.
Will it be about that size on the Rollerball (2002) in the background?
Or is that not even left up to you?
Re: She Let Them Go
I usually like your take on the derby boots, and I do again this time... Creative approach and nice story telling. And it looks good on the tee which is the most important. Props.

It SHOULD be, but I suppose woot could change it if they felt like it.
Thanks so much for the early comments, guys.
GMV for sure. I love it. It's a great way to show a "beginning" without being overly obvious.
Re: She Let Them Go
vote laid at the feet of boots. love it. (the design, not your feet).
Re: She Let Them Go
Nice Work Boots! GMV Stellardig
Re: She Let Them Go
this turned out great, very nice design!
Re: She Let Them Go
Glad you took out the arrows, great work.
Re: She Let Them Go
My eyes... they don't know what to focus on, it's just all so awesome! Great entry this week.

Love the colors on this and the hair is awesome. The huge eyes on the girl and the birds makes awesome though. ![]()

Don't like it. Would never buy it. Not voting for it.

Such animosity... these Woot derbies are turning into "As the Woot Turns" ;)
Boots, I think it turned out really well!

It's not animosity, it's an opinion. I think this shirt stinks, and I stated such.
TurboGraphx16 wrote:It's not animosity, it's an opinion. I think this shirt stinks, and I stated such.
Instead of stating something as useless as "this shirt stinks," why don't you state specific and helpful reasons why you don't like it? Otherwise your opinion is pointless.
TurboGraphx16 wrote:It's not animosity, it's an opinion. I think this shirt stinks, and I stated such.
How constructive. Every tried offering anything to the community?
Re: She Let Them Go
One of my favorites thus far!
this shirt is a bit 'busy'. i really preferred it without the huge glasses as she looks like a bee or something.
TurboGraphx16 wrote:It's not animosity, it's an opinion. I think this shirt stinks, and I stated such.
I'm seconding what others have said - simply saying "this shirt stinks" isn't helpful; it isn't even really much of an opinion, really.
I'm still loving the surreal aspects of this shirt - the more I look at it, the more I find; the more I find, the more I have to think about; the more I have to think about, the more ways I can discover to interpret this shirt. Love it.
TurboGraphx16 wrote:It's not animosity, it's an opinion. I think this shirt stinks, and I stated such.
You know, people rarely leave the good ol' "this stinks" comment on my designs. This is probably because I never get printed and they all feel sorry for me, so they just keep their mouths shut. I see your stinky comment as a light at the end of the tunnel. Soon more stinky comments will follow! Soon everyone will beat me with hate sticks and I will win a derby! Sweet.

I think this shirt smells like success.

Re: She Let Them Go
I really would like to get the chance to buy this shirt. I really like it (as I have liked and voted for your past derby entries)
Good Luck!
Re: She Let Them Go
COOL. I may be new to the derbies, but I can already recognize your art style, Boots. (It's the ones that look beautiful and disturb me at the same time)

You've never really made it until everyone hates you. Btw, maybe I'm missing the reference, what what does this shirt mean a.k.a. stand for? I'm slow.
ya2sabes wrote:You've never really made it until everyone hates you. Btw, maybe I'm missing the reference, what what does this shirt mean a.k.a. stand for? I'm slow.
You're not slow, you're probably just deeper-minded than me.
It doesn't stand for or reference anything other than releasing caged birds (your standard new beginning cheesy symbolism, I guess). I like to put a lot of weird elements into my designs just to make them interesting. People can interpret them any way they want. That's part of the fun, I think. Like, the birds are kind of creepy looking, so maybe she's just released evil into the world, but feels that keeping it locked up was unnatural? I dunno. That wasn't going through my head at the time. I usually just try to make images that are slightly bizarre (hence the goggles and scarf) and that try to evoke some feeling. It's what I like.
Thanks, thanks, thanks for the comments, peeps. Both the good ones and the stinky ones. ![]()
Re: She Let Them Go
Boots, you're the bee's knees. The birds and birdcage remind me of your robot entry from the past - and I really wanted that one, as well. Hopefully this one makes it. Love her scarf and goggles. GMV, of course.

This is almost as bad as just leaving a rather interesting opinion like "This shirt stinks" without backing it up. You do know that I can dislike or even hate something or someone without being jealous of it, right?
I, too, am interested in hearing his reasons if he comes back, but I doubt it's a base jealousy. If it was jealousy, you would figure he would feel that way across the board.
Anyway, that aside, this shirt is FANTASTIC! I like that you covered the eyes with goggles because they looked kind of wonky (something I assume you would have worked on), but I think it also changed the shirt and the tone some. However, I love your style and that "you"ness you put into everything you design. I want this to print SO bad.

you're still such an ass! insipid butt cheese till the end
Re: She Let Them Go
Boots, I am so rooting for this design; it's creative, original, artistic, and just plain neat. I totally cringed when the unimaginitive turtles began its rise to the fog. I think I'm starting to fall into the old Wooters category of seeking far more artistic and original derby entries than some of the cute-gimmicky designs. Please, please let us know when you set your designs up in some external site. There are several of your past ones I would buy in a heart beat.
Re: She Let Them Go
love all the detail and subtle shading. very unique too, as always. i so enjoy your characters and your work : ) great job, boots!

Ok, I did say "usually", perhaps I should have said often. But I can see how that was a pretty broad statement. Sorry, please don't hate me. ;c)
And, yes this shirt is fantastic.
EDIT:
p.s. I also did not mean to directly say that "he" was jealous. I was referring to Jamie's hate stick reference. She does great artwork and I imagine that many people admire her work and some are even jealous.

I would like to second this sentiment ... If you ever start to sell your designs on your own I would be a very happy repeat customer.

I'm going to soon, but it will be awhile before my good designs get there. I'm making the contest rounds with them first.
Thanks so much for the support everyone. I think I get the best comments ever. Really.

Aww thanks Jamie. koi, now my head won't fit in my house. Hopefully the park is big enough to contain it.

Re: She Let Them Go
I'm trying to limit myself to three votes per derby as part of my new years resolution (minus votes for my own of course), and this has snagged the first vote from me. I love how far left the concept is and your renderings are getting crisper every derby. Proud to support the double boots!
Re: She Let Them Go
Out of all of the entries in the derbies, yours are always the ones I want to print (and then I get bitter when they don't!)
But then your new entry cheers me up again, so I guess that's good- right?
Ps: I really love the creepy looking birds ![]()
Re: She Let Them Go
Between your two subs, this is the one that does it for me. I love the colors and it's Tim Burton-esque style.

Okay, this is my first post, so get ready...
My first interpretation was that it was the beginning of the journey the birds were taking her on. I saw a hint of aviation in her goggles and scarf and assumed that the birds were tangling in her hair and taking her away...is that not what you were going for?
Either way, it's a beautiful design.

That's actually pretty close to what was going on in my head when I did it. The goggles and scarf were an afterthought, but they seemed to fit in nicely. It was just a very vague idea, though. I didn't really think it was fleshed out enough to say, "Here! This is what I'm saying with this design!" Good call, though
(Yay to your first post! and I love your name)

Your wife's hair has birds in it?

I think the artwork and design of this tshirt is great and shows phenomenal skill. That being said though, I have not figured out how it is on topic of Beginning.
Maybe I am just slow.

Birds being released is kind of textbook symbolism for a new beginning, I think. Literally, it's a beginning of a life of freedom for the birds. Enh. This talk is too deep for me. ![]()

Were you going to, I would suggest offering multiple colors. Or at least do the crazy armed girl one without that color shirt.
Also, do a shirt with a triceratops, a polar bear, and a baleen whale. Green and orange.

Really? I was fairly certain this was the beginning of the "Crazy Bird Lady." Like you've been watching too much Family Guy or something...

I'm just saying, no one buys that creme junk. This request was legit.
The other request was just an outrageous assembly of my favorite animals/colors.

It was LEMON. Lemon is the new asphalt! (yes, yes, I know that it's even more unpopular than creme, but it looked the best that way. I suppose I could offer a blue version, though. Hmmmph!). I like your outrageous request.

Man, I couldn't decide which one it was on. I decided to guess creme, since I knew it was more popular. Don't like either though.
I like the light blue, the bright green, and the brown.
Re: She Let Them Go
This is such a good design, Boots. So sorry to see it is NOT in the fog... congrats on the HM for your cabin fever tho, that was one of my favorites that Derby!

This shirt makes me think of Pandora's box, especially the interpretation that says hope is the greatest evil of all. Mmmmm, dark.

Ditto. Don't you dare mess with the color of that shirt!
About this design... When I browse the derby, I usually only open up half a dozen or so of the designs, the ones that look the coolest based on the thumbnail, and I rarely vote for more than one or two. A few derbies ago (Optimism), one was yours. This derby, two were yours. And based on your site, it looks like a couple others from other derbies that I didn't know were yours were also among my favorites. Boots, you have a real talent. Thank you for sharing it with us, even if we can't get a shirt out of it.

That's such a nice compliment, I don't know really what to say. "You're welcome" seems a bit pretentious doesn't it? Thanks
I forgot to check the derby this time, it takes so long to load all the images on my ancient computer that I just wait for the derby winners to appear and then buy them...it works out ok usually, but in this case I really wish I had had more patience and had a chance to vote on this shirt, it is so intricate and interesting...and by golly its just so darned neat!
