Sweet!
Re: Winter Dragon
My friends and I were joking "How do you make a phoenix rising from the snow?" I'm glad you did a dragon, but it has that cool look that the phoenix designs often do. And it makes me think of the Dueling Dragons ride at Islands of Adventure. Good times. Good design.

Ha, I was actually thinking of doing a snow phoenix, and wondering if that would cause woot to ban them forever. :p
Thanks for the comments and votes. :D

Re: Winter Dragon
i like blue stuff, it makes me happy.
are you serious? this has nothing to do with winter. it is a frickin' dragon. just a dragon--but oh, it's blue! then it must be about winter. i will be tattling on this post haste.

For once, I agree with you. It is just a blue dragon.
Re: Winter Dragon
I like it a lot... it's a very beatiful dragon! and there IS ice on it and the colors do make it seem cold... I for one love it!
sekiyoku wrote:@ byrbwr - It's a dragon in winter. There's ice on it. :p I also chose the colors to give it a very cold feeling. Should I add some snowflakes to make it obvious?
Blue flames are actually hotter than orange flames.
The icicles help a little, but I expect if someone saw the shirt they would wonder "what's with the drippiness on the dragon?" rather than think "frozen!"

Not if it's frost. :P

But still, dragon does not = winter. if you colored it red you could use it for a summer theme too ahuhu.
Vigilent24 wrote:But still, dragon does not = winter. if you colored it red you could use it for a summer theme too ahuhu.
Not really. Winter is associated with elements of ice/frost/snow, while summer is not really associated with fire, for example. I'm not really sure how I would do a dragon for summer. Maybe have it selling lemonade. :p
Regardless, it's up to woot if they think it's on theme or not. I'll be disappointed if it gets rejected (and a little confused), since last winter derby, there were fine with entries like this: http://shirt.woot.com/Derby/Entry.aspx?id=7601

That entry was very controversial also. Also, have you ever heard TWO WRONGS DO NOT MAKE A RIGHT?????

This is probably going to sound dumb, but i think sparkly snowflake things would've helped dispel any notion that it's fire. I think the dithering helps, but shiny particles would be super attractive. :O
*secondly, it seems that most people on the shirt.woot forums are (unusually) nice and supportive. is it even kosher to be mean? like i've seen a handful of mean comments, but those are usually directed at the top 4.
snarkygal wrote:That entry was very controversial also. Also, have you ever heard TWO WRONGS DO NOT MAKE A RIGHT?????
I think this shirt is far more on theme than the other one though?
Anyway, it's up to woot.
Re: Winter Dragon
When I saw winter theme I was excited because I figured this was a chance to get some cool and simple designs and a temporary end to all the dragons/phoenixes/dinosaurs because they don't have anything to do with winter. But no, there is a dragon AND it is in the fog. There needs to be a dragon.woot for all of these shirts :/

They'll probably just make a derby that's "anything except dragons/phoenixes/dinosaurs/wolves/pretty ladies" one day.. ONE DAY.

very nice design and color! gmv!

I actually had sparkly snowflakes in the original sketch, but they got lost in translation. I wish I had included them. :p
I don't know, I don't think woot is nicer than other sites. I think that people tend to speak their minds more, though, regardless of where it leads. :p
Re: Winter Dragon
I wouldn't sweat it Sekiyoku, it won't get rejected. It has a very wintery feel and there even looks to be icicles on the bottom of the dragon. You've got the theme covered IMO.
You know, the first thing I think of when I think of winter is dragons. Wait...no, I don't, ever. I'm sorry, you have a decent design but this has nothing to do with winter, and anyone who thinks it does is in desperate need of some chapstick. Just because it's blue doesn't mean it's ice.
Re: Winter Dragon
I -really- love this dragon. It's beautiful from an art standpoint. But, to me it doesn't express "Winter" I think it's the dark tones..if anything I'm thinking more tsr white dragon-ish.
Re: Winter Dragon
This is not only beautiful, but it made me shiver a bit. That makes it on-theme to me.
I like it Very much. Thank you
skhouse
well, since tgentry said it's ok, it must be. but the fact of the matter is, it's a dragon. what peoples' fixation with dragons is, i don't know. but can't we keep them out of this derby--this WINTER derby? it's not a lot to ask.. i don't think. or i didn't think.
the problem is: using this logic, you could submit a dragon for almost any derby, and just colorize it where appropriate. this looks hot to me, like a dragon. not cold.
Re: Winter Dragon
This doesn't have a winter feel to it at all. It also looks like fire but the dragon's mouth is closed..? If it was supposed to be frosty breath, then I don't see that, either.
Re: Winter Dragon
Hairy blue dragon?

Clearly it's fire. ...COLD FIRE.
TO THE BURNING FLYING SHARKS!
...and then the dragon opened it's mouth, and made the most angry yell IN HISTORY!

Dragons aren't totally constrained by definition. If your view thinks that dragons = fire. By all means, believe it. There are people who vote for this shirt because they think otherwise or because they simply like the design itself. That is, after all, the point of a derby.
The single thing that upset me about this comment is your somewhat forceful belief that dragons are always related to fire, and your reference to people's fixation on dragons. It seems you take a deep personal insult on designs being submitted that have dragons in them.
Re: Winter Dragon
Seriously? Doesn't everyone know about ice dragons? They're pretty popular.
jewelwing wrote:Seriously? Doesn't everyone know about ice dragons? They're pretty popular.
Yeah, if you read enough fantasy fiction you're bound to run into a bunch of ice dragons. There's pretty much a dragon for every climate and land feature. ![]()
Who are you people to tell us that a fictional creature can only breathe fire? There are plenty of art, books, and movies that have ice dragons that breathe ice, not fire. Ice dragons are Winter creatures. Get over yourselves and stop trying to act like you know everything. The design is beautiful *and* it fits the theme. Don't get a hard-on just because you're tired of dragon/phoenix designs. Cast your vote and shut the hell up.

My criticism is simply that it *looks* like fire.
eHalcyon wrote:My criticism is simply that it *looks* like fire.
May I add that some people have designs of campfires sitting in the snow and that seems to mean winter to them and some people who are voting for those designs? Fires keep you warm in the WINTER.
Hot cocoa is a chocolate drink and it's warm, not cold, that means winter to some. There are drawings of ice cream and popsicles, I associate those with summer and yet it works for the winter theme, (if the concept works I mean, there was one design, oh man...anyway...) I LOVE ice cream in the winter, and it's cold, like winter is cold!
Ok, I'm done. I personally didn't vote for this because I wouldn't buy it, but it's purely a personal preference thing, not a problem with it going against the theme. It's nice artwork, and I still love dragons. END.
I think you're design is really awesome, but I would not buy the shirt because I dislike shirts that have the main focus in the lower area.
Don't see ice dragons very often, excellent execution and placement.
Re: Winter Dragon
I really like this design, while the dragon is one of my favorite creatures, the colors are simply gorgeous together. I hope it makes it so I can buy one.
tgentry wrote:Yeah, if you read enough fantasy fiction you're bound to run into a bunch of ice dragons. There's pretty much a dragon for every climate and land feature.
Thank you Tgentry, I was thinking about frost dragons, ice dragons of course are also popular and I think some people just don't have enough imagination.
Re: Winter Dragon
bleh dont really like this. why so many votes?
...i dislike new woot immensely
tgentry wrote:Yeah, if you read enough fantasy fiction you're bound to run into a bunch of ice dragons. There's pretty much a dragon for every climate and land feature.
don't know how to do the quote multiple people thingy, but yes, this is the main thing I thought of as well. my son has this very cool book I bought a while ago, all about dragons. its designed to look like a real history book. they talk of frost dragons. all kinds of things about them actually, and this is a good interpretation of that. I agree with SarahPants5 completely as well (imagine that, two Sarah's agreeing) and it is definitely on theme. not voting for it cause I only vote what I buy and it is not for me, but its pretty and fits the theme.
Re: Winter Dragon
L o l @ the "winter phoenix" idea.
I think this is great, and I'm incredibly confused by the "THIS IS NOT WINTAAAR!" people. Glad woot staff haven't the same narrowminded issues.
I don't know how you do it, but the dragon is... cute... how is that possible?! :P
lokklyn wrote:They'll probably just make a derby that's "anything except dragons/phoenixes/dinosaurs/wolves/pretty ladies" one day.. ONE DAY.
Haha, no. Too many super nerds here. I've heard the argument that the dragon and planetary designs are because this is technically an electronics site (Woot) and therefore every nerd likes that. I consider myself a closet nerd (I build my own PCs and game a lot blah blah) but honestly I feel like i'm shopping at TJMaxx or the JC Penneys kids section when I'm at Shirt.Woot nowadays. What happened to the cool shirts and why is there nothing to spend money on anymore?

You know those corny dragon shirts and the other ones with the wolves all over the front? They've given me an aversion to any shirt in that class, which is a shame, because some of the dragons I've seen have been really well drawn.
If I want cute or clever things, I'll go to Woot. If I want really cool-looking, stylish designs, I'll go to Threadless (and pay twice as much, hah).

Re: Winter Dragon
Your style is so great, sekiyoku. I always enjoy your designs.
This shirt reminds me of a beautiful short story called "The Ice Dragon" by George R. R. Martin. I hope it garners an honorable mention for a second chance.
