I think it has to do with the use of the trees.
As in using a tree as the entire subject of a design without doing anything with it is boring. (i.e. artsy, nature shirts suck)
But here, the trees are personified and are involved in situation.

It stands to reason that a tree is a tree is a tree until you use it in a way that is witty and unexpected. With so many fall and winter pieces involving a tree (and in most cases, a bird), I think you can see how easily tiresome they become. In contrast, I received praise for a tree entry this last fall because it was unexpected. With the exception that nothing that Cho does is ever ordinary, I hardly expected the trees from Oz's forest to be 'cannibalistic' in nature and use one another for heating fuel. ;)

Yes, but arguement can be made then, that the tree's used in the shirts that you have critized, they were not just a average tree. Each shirt may be looked at differently by each person. Some may be more critical, and some just may think its very artistic. If any of that even makes sense...

But yea, guess point i was getting at was, ive seen you post you want tree's banned from being used, along with other things, and just was weird seeing you fall in love with this tree. and when all is cut and dry, a tree shirt is a tree shirt, yes, some are much better than others (like this one, hilarious!) But still is a tree, and if you would have had your way, this would have never been made, with the banning of tree shirts. SO! To end this long, and probably, boooring rant, just wanted to say, no theme i.e tree's, penguins, etc... should be "banned." Just takes some time to be amazed by someones work

I don't see anything wrong with using an often used design element if you have a fresh spin on it, like this design does. It's like a musician covering a song that's been covered a million times but making it their own. It's when you just throw that element on a shirt and let it do all the heavy lifting that it becomes boring. Nice job again James.

My favorite shirt in the derby (by far). Cartoony shirts are great, but it's tough to beat the line work on something like this design.

I sincerely hope this shirt wins this week. Other shirts I've really wanted to buy have all fallen by the wayside but this one looks like it has a shot.
I only wish it was on something other than white, say cream maybe. I have too many white t shirts already.

I do love this. I've only bought one white shirt from woot, but I will buy this one, too.

I think this one will be a perfect candidate for the using-coffee-to-dye trick. A deep, rich, tan will go great with this design.

I agree, and to that end I don't understand the cries of "not another turtle" or "not another penguin" or "not another rabbit". The concepts are almost always different from any previous submissions, even if they all use the same element.
